22、About PISA

The Program for International Student Assessment(PISA)is a triennial(每三年一次的)international survey which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students. To date, students representing more than 70 economies have participated in the assessment.

What makes PISA different

PISA is unique because it develops tests which are not directly linked to the school curriculum. The tests are designed to assess to what extent students at the end of compulsory education can apply their knowledge to real life situations and be equipped for full participation in society. The information collected through background questionnaires also provides context which can help analysts interpret the results.

What the assessment involves

Since the year 2000,every three years,fifteen-year-old students from randomly selected schools worldwide take tests in the key subjects:reading.mathematics and sciences with a focus on one subject in each year of assessment. The students take a test that lasts 2 hours. The tests are a mixture of open-ended and multiple-choice questions that are organized in groups based on a passage setting out a real-life situation. A total of about 390 minutes of test items are covered. Students take different combinations of different tests.

Additional PISA initiatives

PlSA-based Test for SchoolsPTS

As interest in PISA has grown,School and local educators have been wanting to know how their individual schools compare with students and schools in education systems worldwide. To address this need, the OECD(The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development)has developed the PISA-based test for schools. It is currently available in the United States and the OECD is in discussions with governments to make the test available in other countries such as England and Spain.

【1】PISA is different from other programs because ________ .

A.its test is closely related to the school curriculum

B.its test aims to assess whether students can solve real-life problems

C.its test can equip students for full participation in school

D.test scores directly determine the analysis of the test

【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Test-takers are carefully selected.

C.Test-takers are tested on three key subjects.

D.Test-takers spend about 390minutes on the test.

23、By mimicking (模仿) the properties (特性) of spider silk, one of the strongest materials in nature, researchers from the University of Cambridge have created a plant-based, sustainable material which promises to replace plastic in many common household products.

Created by using a new approach for assembling plant proteins into materials which mimic silk on a molecular (分子的) level, the new material is as strong as many common plastics in use today. The energy-efficient method, which uses sustainable ingredients, results in a plastic-like film. Non-fading “structural” color can be added to the film, and it can also be used to make water-resistant coatings.

For years, Professor Tuomas Knowles from Cambridge has been researching the behavior of proteins. Much of his research has been focused on what happens when proteins misfold or “misbehave”, and how this relates to health and human disease, primarily Alzheimer’s disease. As part of the research, Knowles and his team became interested in why materials like spider silk are so strong when they have such weak molecular bonds (键). Having found that one of the key features that gives spider silk its strength is that the hydrogen bonds are arranged regularly in space and at a very high density, the researchers successfully replicated (复制) the structures found on spider silk by using soy protein isolate (SPI), a protein with a completely different composition.

“Other researchers have been working directly with silk materials as a plastic replacement, but they’re still an animal product. In a way we’ve come up with ‘vegan spider silk’— we’ve created the same material without the spider.”

“This is the culmination of something we’ve been working on for years, which is understanding how nature generates materials from proteins,” said Knowles. “We didn’t set out to solve a sustainability challenge — we were motivated by curiosity as to how to create strong materials from weak interactions.”

【1】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.How the new material was created.

B.What makes the ideal ingredients.

C.Who are in charge of the research.

D.Why health and disease are connected.

【2】Which of the following might Knowles agree with?

A.Life is full of surprises.

B.Ideals light our way forward.

C.Failure is the mother of success.

D.We must believe in ourselves.

【3】How is the new film different from other silk materials?

A.It’s strong.

B.It’s efficient.

C.It’s sustainable.

D.It’s replaceable.

【4】Which of the following is the underlined word “culmination” closest in meaning to?

A.Fruit.

B.Demand.

C.Complexity.

D.Change.

24、   Coronavirus: What is “flattening the curve” and will it work?

In epidemiology, the idea of slowing a virus' spread so that fewer people need to seek treatment at any given time is known as "flattening the curve". It explains why so many countries are implementing "social distancing" guidelinesincluding a "shelter in place" order that affects 6.7 million people in Northern California, even though COVID19 outbreaks there might not yet seem severe.

Here's what you need to know about the curve, and why we want to flatten it.

What is the curve?

The "curve" researchers are talking about refers to the projected number of people who will contract COVID19 over a period of time. To be clear this is not a hard prediction of how many people will definitely be infected, but a theoretical number that's used to model the virus' spread. Here's what one looks like:

The curve takes on different shapes, depending on the virus's infection rate. It could be a steep curve in which the virus spreads exponentially that is, case counts keep doubling at a consistent rate, and the total number of cases skyrockets to its peak within a few weeks.  Infection curves with a steep rise also have a steep fall; after the virus infects pretty much everyone who can be infected, case numbers begin to drop exponentially, too.

The faster the infection curve rises, the quicker the local health care system gets overloaded beyond its capacity to treat people. As we're seeing in Italy, more and more new patients may be forced to go without ICU beds, and more and more hospitals may run out of the basic supplies they need to respond to the outbreak.

A flatter curve, on the other hand, assumes the same number of people ultimately get infected, but over a longer period of time. A slower infection rate means a less stressed health care system, fewer hospital visits on any given day and fewer sick people being turned away.

How do we flatten the curve?

As there is currently no vaccine or specific medication to treat COVID19, the only way to flatten the curve is through collective action. Some governments have recommended that all citizens wash their hands frequently, selfisolate when they're sick or suspect they might be and start “social distancing” right away.

1According to the passage, which of the following about the curve is TRUE?

A.The curve has different shapes depending on the types of pandemic.

B.The curve with a flatter rise has a flatter fall as well.

C.The steep curve suggests local health system might maintain its capacity.

D.The curve here shows the number of people who've been cured.

2Why is it important to flatten the curve?

A.The time for the infection will be shorter.

B.People can develop immunity to the virus.

C.The health care system can handle the infected people.

D.Vaccines can be developed to stop the spread of the virus.

3What is the way mentioned in the passage to flatten the curve?

A.Putting local health care system under stress.

B.Paying more frequent visits to local hospitals.

C.Giving people effective medication or vaccine.

D.Practicing social distancing as soon as possible.
