21、 I prefer Lynne Truss’s phraseology: I am a grammar “sticker”. And, like Truss – author of Eats, shoots & Leaves – I have a “zero tolerance” approach to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid.
Now, Truss and I disagree on what it means to have “zero tolerance”. She thinks that people who mix up basic grammar “deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked (砍) up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave”, while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job – even if they are otherwise qualified for the position.
Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies, iFixit or Dozuki, takes a compulsory grammar test. If job hopefuls can’t distinguish between “to” and “too”, their applications go into the bin.
Of course, we write for a living. iFixit.com is the world’s largest online repair manual (指南), and Dozuki helps companies write their own technical documentation, like paperless work instructions and step-by-step user manuals. So, it makes sense that we’ve made a strong strike against grammar errors.
But grammar is relevant for all companies. Yes, language is constantly changing, but that doesn’t make grammar unimportant. Good grammar is credibility, especially on the Internet. And, for better or worse, people judge you if you can’t tell the difference between “their” “there” and “they’re”.
Good grammar makes good business sense – and not just when it comes to hiring writers. Writing isn’t in the official job description of most people in our office. Still, we give our grammar test to everybody, including our salespeople, our operations staff, and our programmers.
Grammar signifies more than just a person’s ability to remember high school English. I’ve found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing – like stocking shelves or labeling parts. It is the same with programmers. Applicants who don’t think writing is important are likely to think lots of other things also aren’t important.
【1】What’s the author’s “zero tolerance” approach to these job seekers who mix up basic grammar?
A.They should be left out for a job. B.They have to correct their mistakes.
C.They aren’t qualified for their jobs. D.They must be severely punished.
【2】Which of the following is TRUE of iFixit and Dozuki?
A.Only one of them has a compulsory grammar test.
B.They are companies where one learns grammar.
C.Grammar is quite important for their existence.
D.They depend on grammar correction for a living.
【3】What can we learn from the text?
A.Companies giving grammar tests may have no good business sense.
B.Grammar becomes unimportant as language is constantly changing.
C.A “zero tolerance” approach to grammar errors might seem a little unfair.
D.People who pay attention to writing may pay attention to other things.
22、Carving pumpkins is a classic Halloween activity. Families and friends can come together to create amazing scenes and faces out of pumpkins while enjoying each others' company in a family friendly environment.
【1】 After choosing your pumpkin, you should make sure you have all of the right carving tools. Once you have the right pumpkin, the tools, and perhaps a template, it is time to start carving.
First, use a saw to cut out the top, around the stem of the pumpkin, so you can reach inside. You can cut the top of the pumpkin round. Of course, you can cut a notch in it. 【2】 Once your top is off, reach inside with a large spoon and take out all of the seeds and stuff insides of the pumpkin.
When all of the insides are taken out and the inside of your pumpkin looks clean, you are ready to start carving. You can use a pen to draw your pattern onto the pumpkin so it's easier to carve or you can draw your design. 【3】
After your pumpkin is carved, it is time to put it outside of the house and light it. 【4】That gives it the flaming quality which is the best on Halloween. You can also use some lights that are battery powered rather than actually on fire.
On Halloween night, your fantastic pumpkin creations will surely amaze all of the trick-or-treaters. 【5】 Hopefully, you have fun carving pumpkins with all of your favorite people and sharing your creation with the world.
A.The top should be big and beautiful.
B.Ensure that all necessary items are available.
C.The naughty children will stop by your house.
D.You can use an actual candle inside your pumpkin.
E.Children will pay a visit to every family in their community.
F.The most important part of pumpkin carving design is to be creative.
G.Because it's simpler to remember how the top and the pumpkin fit together.
23、Currently, video calls are becoming familiar challenges as the COVID-19 forces workers to communicate from their homes and offices.
Now scientists have revealed why we tend to end up raising our voices at our workmates: as video quality falls, we speak louder and vary our gestures (手势) in an attempt to make up.
“The gestures we make while talking, as well as other visual signals, are truly important and integrated aspects of how we communicate,” said Dr. James Trujillo, the first author of the research at Radboud University, in the Netherlands.
Trujillo said previous research had shown that when we cannot hear someone well, we speak louder, while the team’s recent work shows that when a video call is very noisy, people make their gestures more noticeable. Trujillo and his colleagues reported in a journal how they analyzed video calls between 20 pairs of participants, who sat in separate rooms and chatted freely to each other over a Zoom-like video call for 40 minutes. Over the course of the call, the quality of the video was changed in 10 steps between excellent and completely unclear, with half of the pairs experiencing improving video quality, and half experiencing it in the opposite way. The video quality during the call at each step was the same for both participants. The research tracked the participants’ gestures and aspects of their speech.
The team added that when gestures were not being used, speech was unaffected by decreases in visibility. However, when gestures were used, volume increased by up to five decibels (分贝) as video quality deteriorated, and then remained at this higher level as video quality decreased further—in other words, when gestures ceased to be useful at all.
“They know that the gestures being produce are vital to their communication, but their partner is going to have a harder time seeing them. So they increase the strength of the other signal—speech.” he said.
【1】Why do we tend to raise our voices on video call?
A.Due to the poor video quality.
B.In the hope of curing our poor hearing.
C.In an attempt to avoid making gestures.
D.For the sake of generating interest in the topic.
【2】What do we know from paragraphs 3-4?
A.Recent findings agree with previous ones.
B.Participants made the video call in equal measure.
C.Integrated factors make for effective communication.
D.Dr. James Trujillo is the first person to look into the topic.

D.Speak up, we can’t see you
24、 While gazing at an airplane passing thousands of feet overhead, or when you are just about to board a flight at the airport, have you ever noticed that the majority of airplanes are white? Sure, some have decorations and names in different colors, but the base color behind those add-ons is almost always white.
Now, thinking of your summer wardrobe, which has at least a couple of white items, be it a T-shirt, a pair of pants, or a skirt. The main reason people prefer white on a hot day is its particular ability to reflect sunlight. The color white is a terrific reflector of sunlight, and reflects almost all the light that falls on it, unlike other colors, which absorb some of the light. So, just like clothing, aircraft producers use white paint to keep airplanes cool. It minimizes the heating as well as the potential harm from solar radiation. Planes have some parts made from plastic, carbon fiber, and fiberglass. Those things in particular need the most protection from the blazing sun.
The next reason for painting planes white is even more practical. It’s just cheaper to have white-colored plane. You see, all airplanes start out white when they’re made. But what if an airline decides to paint theirs, say, bright yellow? An additional layer of paint will add more than 1,000 pounds of weight to the aircraft. The paint on a Boeing 737 weighs 180kg and on a Boeing 747 is around 500kg. Weight increment means the increase of fuel burnt, and that can get pricey. Most airlines want to avoid the higher cost.
When flying at high altitudes, exposed to various atmospheric conditions, colored airplanes tend to fade, and thus require a lot of paint jobs to maintain their artistic appeal. A white-colored airplane, on the other hand, doesn’t appear significantly different, even after spending a considerable amount of time in the air.
Besides, airplanes are regularly inspected for cracks and any other form of surface damage for obvious safety reasons. Nothing works better than white when it comes to spotting a crack on the surface, as the crack is almost always darker than white. Plus, a white plane is easier to spot visually in the event of a crash or any other mishap, especially at night, or in a massive body of water.
Additionally, a study published in Human-Wildlife Interactions found that the paint job does make a difference to birds: “This finding suggests that a whiter airframe would stand out more against the sky from the perspective of the flying bird’s visual system.” According to ABC, approximately $300 million dollars’ worth of damage to planes is caused by birds each year. There you have it: Planes are white to keep you as safe and comfortable as possible, with the added bonus of hitting by fewer birds.
【1】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Colored airplane is easier to spot when in the event of a crash.
B.White color can absorb some of the light and make the plane cool.
C.White paint can decrease the possible damage of the sun radiation.

B.To show the cost of an airplane is quite expensive.
C.To state white plane is more obvious to flying birds.
D.To stress how serious damage birds can do to planes.
【4】The main purpose of this passage is to .
A.inform and explain B.discuss and clarify

25、Years ago, I lived in the English midlands and would walk the same route along the local canal each evening. On winter mornings, I would see the _________ sight of bird flocks dancing across the landscape, a distant cacophony (刺耳的嘈杂声) _________ above the fields. They were jackdaws (寒鸦), the smallest member of the crow family.
Research led by Masters student Alex Dibnah asked: Why are jackdaws so loud when they _________? Then he began to work with a team. The team’s _________ was that the morning calls might be a jackdaw version of “_________”. Each individual’s call might _________ as an “I’m in!” helping them coordinate (协调) their _________.
To test this, the researchers artificially _________ call levels during the jackdaws’ morning cacophony using speakers at their sleeping sites. When extra calls were played, the jackdaws _________ earlier, showing they use calls as a check-in system.
Individual jackdaws __________ from leaving with the flock because they get more social information like where to find food, they can maximize their time spent finding food, and they’re less __________ being attacked. This sort of decision-making isn’t __________ to jackdaws — it’s been reported in other species as well.
So, the cacophony of jackdaws in the morning is a clever solution to __________ a large group. If you’re __________ by the noise, find comfort in the fact that the louder they get, the sooner they’ll leave you in __________.
