二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、As an Asian country, Singapore has a reputation for being highly westernized, with English among the country’s four official languages, but a couple of signs found on local buses that have recently become a hit online may say otherwise.

Quite different from English we know, the signs read, for example, “Here cannot go in” instead of “No entry”, and “Here can charge phone” instead of “Charge phone here.” This language that resembles English is called Singaporean English or Singlish.

The New York Times calls Singlish “patchwork” because Singapore consists of migrants(移民) from several countries including China, India and Malaysia, and they all speak their own versions of “English”. “Everyone who speaks it shapes it,” wrote the newspaper.

For example, in Singlish, you can easily recognize influences from Chinese, including vocabulary such as “ Mee Siam” and “da bao”. Sentence structures like “ toilet where” instead of “where’s the toilet” also come from Chinese.

Interesting and diverse as it may seem, the trend for Singlish is worrying Singapore’s government. It is concerned that the dialect is lowering the country’s English standard and may affect its relationship with visitors. It even started the Speak Good English Movement.

Unfortunately, the problem was not solved. Instead, Singlish has boomed, especially among young people who think of it as a sign of being cool and a way of identifying themselves as Singaporean.

But this does not mean that standard English is being abandoned by young people. In fact, they are much more capable than the government gives credit—they can speak both.

“We are a nation good at code switching—we know that the way we speak to friends or drivers must be different from how we act at work or school,” wrote Cheryl, a Singaporean author, in Time magazine, “To actively urge us to give up a language that speaks to the very heart of who we are, that’s so beautifully represents the melting pot of Chinese, Indians, Malaysians and Eurasians that we are, is shortsighted, surely.”

1Why does Singapore have many different versions of English?

A. It is highly westernized.   B. It is made up of migrants.

C. It is influenced by Chinese.   D. It is affected by official languages.

2What is the purpose of starting the Speak Good English Movement?

A. To stop the new trend.   B. To better the relationship.

C. To keep the English standard.   D. To give the government credit.

3What do the young people think of Singlish?

A. It’s their identity.   B. It’s interesting.

C. It’s a sign of status.   D. It’s a way of code-switching.

4What can we learn from what Cheryl said?

A. Different people speak different styles of Singlish.

B. Singlish is a more beautiful language than others.

C. People speaks Singlish only to friends and drivers.

D. People can use Singlish to express themselves well.

22、   Louise Gluck has been no stranger to awards over her long and storied career, since her first publication in 1968. In 1993, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poems, The Wild Iris. And on Oct 8 she became the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature with the Nobel prizes first awarded in 1901.

Gluck was honored “for her unmistakable poetic voice that, with plain beauty, makes individual existence universal”. Often said to be an autobiographical poet, drawing from her life, “she is not to be regarded as a confessional poet (告白派诗人). Gluck seeks the universal,” Nobel Committee Chair Anders Olsson said in a statement.

Gluck, 77, the author of 12 poetry collections, has been able to turn her life experiences into universal themes covering life, loss, and loneliness. Because of this, readers have often found her poetry to be “dark”. However, there is much more than darkness in her voice, as noted by Olsson. “It is straightforward and a voice full of humor and biting wit,” he said.

For example, in her poem Snowdrops, she uses the coming of spring after winter to show rebirth of life after death. She leads readers down a depressing path only to reconnect with the light at the near end. At the conclusion of the poem, readers are left to feel the “raw wind of the new world” as they watch a new spring. This is often the case in Gluck’s poetry, being able to feel joy even after not having done so for a long time.

When her work Faithful Virtuous Night received a National Book Award for Poetry in 2014, a judge for the award went on to say, the collection comes from “a world where darkness blurs (使模糊) ordinarily sharp edges around the oppositions of our livesloss and renewal, male and female, the living and the dead”.

Although she’s already a well-known writer, experienced in exploring pain and healing, Gluck did feel honored to be given the Nobel award. However, when asked what the prize means to her, the poet responded by saying, “It’s too new... I don’t know really what it means.” Her only hope is that she can continue her daily life.

1What can we know about Louise Gluck?

A.Her first book was published in 1993.

B.The Wild Iris won her the Nobel Prize in literature.

C.She draws from her life experiences in her writing.

D.She is seen as a successful confessional poet.

2What does Olsson think of Gluck’s poems?

A.They focus on individual existence. B.They are too dark for readers.

C.They are mainly about human psychology. D.They are frank and humorous in style.

3Why does the author mention Snowdrops in paragraph 4?

A.To introduce the main plots of this poem.

B.To describe Gluck’s creativity in choosing themes.

C.To show the features of Gluck’s poetry.

D.To explain Gluck’s purpose in writing Snowdrops.

4How does Gluck feel about winning the Nobel Prize in literature?

A.She is not qualified for the prize. B.It is not meaningful for her.

C.It may influence her daily life. D.The history of the award isn’t long.

23、Virtual realty can improve brain activity that may be crucial for leaning, memory and even treating Alzheimer’s, a study on rats has found.

After monitoring the rats’ brain activity, researchers from the University of California Los Angeles discovered electrical activity in a region known as the hippocampus neurons (海马体神经元) differed depending on whether the rats were placed in real-world or VR environments. The new findings are significant as the hippocampus is a primary driver of learning and memory in the brain.

When rats walk around in real life, electrical activity in the hippocampus appears to synchronize (同步发生) at a rate of eight heartbeats per second. Heartbeats at this frequency are generally known as “theta (Ѳ) waves”, with stronger Ѳ waves seeming to improve the brain's ability to learn and keep sensory information. When placed in a VR environment, the rat’s Ѳ waves became stronger.

“It turns out that amazing things happen when the rat is in virtual reality” said Prof Mayank Mehta from UCLA. The scientists also found that VR environments could change different electrical rhythms (节律) in different parts of the neurons, which indicates that scientists may be able to control human brain rhythms.

“This is a new technology that has great potential,” Mehta said. The study also indicates why VR may stimulate these unique brain waves. A big part of it, Mehta puts, may be down to the very different set of stimuli presented in VR.

Imagine that you’re approaching a doorway in real life. Your eyes see the door getting larger. But how do you know that you’re moving forward and the door isn’t coming to you? The answer is that your brain uses information such as the acceleration of your head through space or the shift of weight from one foot to the other-information that may not be present during a VR experience.

【1】According to the passage, why are the new findings important?

A.VR’s contributions to learning have finally been identified.

B.VR can affect electrical activity in the hippocampus neurons.

C.VR produces the same effects on brains as real environments.

D.VR is likely to become another driver for learning and memory.

【2】What can we learn about Ѳ waves?

A.They don’t respond to different brain rhythms.

B.They remain stable in different environments.

C.They affect how human perceive knowledge.

D.They have lite to do with the rate of heartbeats.

【3】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.The potential of the new technology.

B.The control of human brain rhythms.

C.The change in different parts of neurons.

D.The stimulation of the unique brain waves.

【4】How does the author introduce VR’s different set of stimuli?

A.By conducting further tests on rats.

B.By comparing different environments.

C.By providing a detailed analysis

D.By explaining the theory of VR.
