22、Alida Monaco doesn't spend her summers doing the usual teenage work ,like working at the mall. Instead ,she's studying.
It used to be that a summer job was considered a teenage thing. Today ,Monaco ,who has never had a summer job ,is part of growing trend(趋势) teenagers concentrating on their studies ,even during the summer. That's down from 72% of Americans aged 16 to 19 who worked in July of 1978 ,according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Fierce competition (竞争) older workers to the workforce and weak economic(经济的)growth are all adding to the decrease of teenagers in the workforce. But as schoolwork grows increasingly heavy and homework eats up more time ,current data suggests the biggest reason why some teens won't be working this summer is that they simply don't have time.
For college-bond teens ,some teachers even advise students no t to waste time on a summer job. " Some of my students only have about six weeks off in the summer ,"said Shannon Reed ,a lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh and a former high school English teacher. " I could never advise that they got jobs during that short break. They should rest. "
Young people who don't work may miss out on valuable skills that they'll need later in life. Early work experiences teach reliability ,financial intelligence ,self-control and help people learn to deal with adult situations. But Monaco ,who plans to attend Harvard ,isn't fazed by her lack of work experience. " May be I have missed out on a couple of life skills , she said. " But I don't think it will harm in any way. "

23、 It’s said that you don’t know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes. And you also don’t know what it’s like for older people to travel until you accompany one on a trip.
After flying with my elderly father from Washington, D.C. to L.A. in July, I began to realize that a companion has important tasks that can make a journey easier for older people. I booked nonstop tickets on JetBlue to avoid tiring, confusing connections, and we flew directly into small, manageable Long Beach Airport. Even though my father could walk, I arranged with the airline for wheelchair assistance, which meant we got on board first.
When I took him back to the airport for his return flight to Washington, I got permission from JetBlue to wait with him at the gate instead of saying goodbye at the security checkpoint. I wished he’d had a first-class seat and access to a comfortable airline club. Better yet, I wish I had flown with him both ways. As I watched the attendant wheel him to the lift that took him from the tarmac(飞机跑道)to the plane, I felt like an anxious mom sending her child to school for the first time.
I didn’t need to worry about my father wandering away; at 82, his mind was sharper than mine. But his hearing was poor, so I worried about what would happen if he missed an important announcement. Fortunately, everything went just fine. Careful planning made the trip successful.
Next time I travel with a senior, I’ll know better. I hope there will be a next time.

A. He may miss the flight. B. He may wander away.
C. He may not find the seat. D. He may not walk too much.
【4】What does the writer want to tell us in the passage?
A. Taking a trip does great good to seniors.
B. It is a pleasant experience to travel with seniors.
C. To have a long journey with seniors is unpractical.
D. A good arrangement ensures seniors to take a nice trip.
24、The rain forest contains more than 4000 types of birds and more than 1,000,000 types of insects. In one square mile, there may be more than 100 different types of plants. Some call it the world’s last wilderness area. People are becoming concerned. They want to protect this last wilderness area, the rain forest, and its plant and animal life. For example, in Costa Rica, students have raised money to buy land in the rain forest to protect it. Some businesses prefer to buy products from the rain forest to encourage leaving the forest as it is. Others such as a major ice cream maker have been giving a percentage of their profits for rain forest protection.
In the rain forest of the Amazon, 50 to 150 plant species are being destroyed every day. Some people want to use the land so they cut down some of the rain forest. They want the trees for wood to build houses. They want the land to grow grass for cattle. They want to build roads to areas for mining gold and other minerals. As a result, the forest and its plants are disappearing.
Some scientists and government officials are pointing out the importance of the plants and knowledge of the tribes (部落). They say that it is time to lay stress on the rain forest. It will show the peoples of the rain forests that the world values them, their knowledge of the plants, and the plants themselves. Some years ago, there were hardly any education programs for protecting the rain forest. But today it’s hard to find a public school, university, or law school that does not have such a kind of program. Until we do that, nothing else will change!
The people who live in the rain forest countries are beginning to see that it is profitable and important to save these areas. The Jivaro, a tribe in the rain forest of northern Peru, recently told us, “You are like babies in the rain forest, but we will teach you.”
【1】The author lists the example in paragraph 1 to ______.

A.The reason why the rain forest is disappearing.
B.The influence that the rain forest has on society.
C.The ways that people make use of the rain forest.
D.The rate at which plant species are being destroyed.
【3】What is especially important for protecting the rain forest according to paragraph 3?
A.Law.
B.Policy.
C.Education.
D.Science.
【4】What does Jivaro intend to tell us by the underlined sentence?
A.We should be smart enough to learn from them.
B.Babies in the rain forest need higher education.
C.Learning from old people is important for young people.
D.We will be punished without following the tribe s sound advice.
