22、   We have long known that, for particular skills, people tend to rate themselves incorrectly. In a famous study in 1981, researchers asked people to rate their driving ability. More than 90 percent considered themselves above average. Of course, some people who think they are above average drivers really are. But the 90 percent statistic shows that many people inflate how they compare with others. In fact, only 50 percent of people can rate above average.

So when are people likely to be overconfident in how they rank? And when are they underconfident? Spencer Greenberg of Clear Thinking and his team conducted a study and asked people where they ranked on 100 skills.

For each skill, participants were asked how they thought they compared with others on the platform who shared their age and gender (性别), and lived in their area. If, on average, people thought they could outperform more than 50 percent of others at the task, that suggests systematic overconfidence. If, however, people thought they would outperform less than 50 percent, that's evidence of underconfidence.

There was great variation in how people assessed their relative skills at a task. On average, people rated themselves better than 75 percent of others in their ability to use a computer, for example. But people rated themselves better than only 32 percent of others in their ability to knit (编织) a sweater.

Next, the researchers found that people tend to be overconfident when it comes to tasks that are viewed as easy and underconfident when it comes to tasks that are viewed as hard. People overestimate (高估) how they compare with others in cutting up vegetables but underestimate where they rank in their ability to recite the alphabet backward.

Also, the more experienced people are at a task, the more people tend to be overconfident. People tend to be overconfident in their skill at frying an egg, which most people have done multiple times, and underconfident in their ability to paint a portrait (画像), which most people have rarely tried.

1What does the underlined word “inflate” in Paragraph 1 mean?

A.Overstate. B.Imagine. C.Reconsider. D.Evaluate.

2What percentage of people do the participants think they can beat at computer operation?

A.32%. B.50%. C.75%. D.90%.

3In which skill do many participants rate themselves better than others?

A.Knitting a sweater. B.Painting a portrait.

C.Cutting up vegetables. D.Reciting the alphabet backward.

4What might happen as people gain experience of a thing?

A.They tend to lose interest in it.

B.Their skill increases at a rapid pace.

C.They want to try more challenging things.

D.Their confidence rises faster than their skill.

23、It's hair-raising news for criminals on the run. Scientists behind a new study have worked out how to identify individuals only based on the proteins(蛋白质) in a single piece of their hair.

While the police already look at DNA from hair as part of investigations, the technique is far from ideal: DNA is easily changeable, meaning it can only be analyzed within a certain time period after the crime. But the new technique could even be used to solve historical or archaeological cases, making it far superior to DNA arrangement in many ways.

DNA change depends on several environmental factors including temperature, humidity and PH. It is also affected by the activity of bacteria and other microorganisms. In contrast, actual hairs can survive for a long time-----sometimes centuries. After bones and teeth, hair is in fact one of the most resistant structures of the human body.

In order to understand how the protein can be used to identify individuals, it is important to understand proteins are coded by DNA. This means that a certain level of the genetic variation that we see in different people's DNA passes into their proteins. In fact, genetic information in the DNA is translated into chains that make up proteins.

The method not only allows for human identification but it can also show how old the sample is and what region it comes from, so that we can distinguish between current and ancient samples. But while the discovery is exciting, the technique is not quite polished enough to be used in the court room. The main task now will be to analyze hair samples from all over the world, which will make it a lot more reliable.

The new discovery will promote the significance of hair as evidence in courts, at a time when some forensic(司法鉴定的) disciplines have been criticized in the US. It will also be of great use in archaeology.

D. Humans can be identified by proteins in hair.

2Which evidence is more reliable for the police to identify a criminal?

A. Lost teeth   B. The footprint.

C. Personal belongings   D. Damaged DNA.

3In what way is the new technique superior to DNA test?

A. Serving as evidence in courts.

B. Possessing genetic information.

24、While the link between sleep and a healthy heart is well established, researchers are still devoted to the details. A new study suggests there might even be the best possible time, within our 24-hour body clock, for falling asleep.

Of course, the reasons for not obtaining the right sleep, whether it’s the best amount or right timing are not always within our control. So anyone struggling with their sleep should seek medical advice and focus on whatever they need to do that works for them—as telling a specific bedtime may have the opposite impact on some. But for the rest of us it may be helpful to know that falling asleep between 10-11 pm seems to hit the sweet spot for a healthy cardiovascular(心血管的) system.

“The body has a 24-hour internal clock, called circadian rhythm, which helps regulate physical and mental functioning.” says University of Exeter psychologist David Plans. “While we cannot conclude causation from our study, the results suggest that early or late bedtimes may be more likely to interrupt the body clock, with harmful consequences for cardiovascular health.”

Analyzing wrist-worn accelerometer data from 88,026 participants in the UK Biobank study, the research team was able to compare sleep timing over a seven-day period with later health outcomes. The dataset included 3, 172 cases of cardiovascular disease, during almost six years of tracking participants.

The team found falling asleep after midnight or before 10 pm was associated with around a 25 percent increase in risk of cardiovascular disease, compared to falling asleep between 10-11 pm. This increase in risk dropped to 12 percent for those who fell asleep between 11-12 pm. “The riskiest time was after midnight, potentially because it may reduce the likelihood of seeing morning light, which resets the body clock.” says Plans.

This sort of study can’t determine if sleep timing itself contributes to heart disease—it may be other behaviors linked to staying up late, like staying out drinking or stress keeping people awake that are causing the problems.

【1】What is the author’s attitude to the so-called specific bedtime?

A.Doubtful.

B.Ambiguous.

C.Objective.

D.Uncaring.

【2】What can we learn according to what David says?

A.Circadian rhythm is named a 24-hour internal clock.

B.Early or late bedtimes interrupt cardiovascular health.

C.The body helps control physical and mental functioning.

D.The body clock is less interrupted by early or late bedtimes.

【3】What did the team find according to paragraph 5?

A.Sleeping after midnight may cause the worst.

B.Staying up late is likely to reduce the risk of heart disease.

C.Falling asleep between 11-12 pm does more harm to one’s body.

D.Changes of the body clock aren't related to sleeping before 10 pm.

【4】What can be concluded from the text?

A.Enough sleep is largely important.

B.Sleep contributes to a healthy heart.

C.Cardiovascular disease leads to heart disease.

D.The best time to fall asleep should be identified.
