二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、While doing some grocery shopping one day, I realized I had spent close to 30 minutes just in the produce section, meticulously(一丝不苟地) choosing the best-looking apples, bananas that were ripe but not spotted and ears of corn with perfectly neat rows of kernels(谷粒). However, I bet I'm not the only one that rejects the slightest imperfections in fruits and vegetables.

I've also seen how my pursuit of perfect produce has influenced my children. When I pack their lunches, I make sure I include fleshy tomatoes, crisp blueberries, and cucumbers without any scratches. But one day when my daughter refused to eat a pear that was turning slightly brown, I knew I had to change my way. I realized I was unconsciously teaching my children to accept society's standards of perfection and that these perceptions could have a disastrous impact on our environment.

In the US, up to 40 percent of food is wasted every year. Around 20 percent of food waste is produced directly at the farm, for the so-called "ugly" food may not meet certain standards set by grocery stores, though the food is still perfectly consumable.

On a recent night, I attended a dinner party to raise awareness about this growing problem. It was the brainchild of food waste activist Josh Treuhaft, which was an intimate gathering of 16 people dining on a table made from recycled wood. The chef, Pesha Perlsweig, prepared a six-course meal with food, which was purchased from Imperfect Produce that specifically sells "ugly" fruit and vegetables. The organic twisted carrots or knobbly(多疙瘩的) sweet potatoes can be bought at this market for 30 to 50 percent of the price.

I was impressed by Perlsweig's creative, delicious dishes made from the "ugly" food. Before each dish, Perlsweig offered guests tips on how we can reduce our food waste. After the evening's dinner, I became inspired to rethink the way I shopped for and consumed food, and to accept the imperfect. Though looking ugly, the food contains no less nutrition than normal food. Furthermore, it's cheap at the price. My actions inspired my daughter to think differently as well. I'm hoping that these small changes in our perception can make a big difference to our world.

22、Success and Risk in Extreme Sports

What is it that drives some to take extreme risks, while the rest of us hurry for the safety of the sidelines?

Lester Keller, sports-psychology expert, says that not everyone has the mental makeup to do well in extreme sports. He notes that most of us hit a natural ceiling that limits our appetite for extreme risk in tricky conditions. But others have a much higher tolerance for risk. Keller points to a top ski racer. He told Keller that “the high element of risk makes you feel alive, tests what you are made of and how far you can take yourself”. He said he would get nervous on some of the courses, but that this would just make him fight more.

Psychologists note that some people seem to have a strong desire for adrenaline (肾上腺素) rushes as a behavior seeking excited feelings. Like many extreme athletes, Emily Cook’s appetite for risk appeared at a young age. “I was a gymnast,” she said. “I was one of those kids who enjoyed and did well at anything where you were upside down.” As she started doing harder tricks, she was drawn to the challenge. “There are moments when you’re up there doing a new trick and it seems like an impossible thing. But overcoming that is just the coolest feeling in the world.”

Shane Murphy, sports professor, has worked with groups climbing Everest. “To me, that just seems like the height of risk,” he said. “But to them it was the next step in an activity that they’ve prepared for years.” Murphy said the view of extreme athletes is different from our own. “We look at a risky situation and know that if we were in that situation we would be out of control. But from the athletes’ view, they have a lot of control, and there are many things that they do to minimize risk.”

Another aspect of risk perception (认知) may be something referred to as “the flow”, a state in which many athletes become absorbed in the acts that focus the mind completely on the present. “Something that makes you try doing a tougher climb than usual, perhaps, is that your adrenaline flows and you become very concentrated on what you’re doing,” Murphy says. “After it’s over, there’s great excitement.”

People of different skill levels experience the flow at different times. Some may always be driven to adventures that others consider extreme. “I can enjoy hitting a tennis ball around, because that’s my skill level,” Murphy says. “But others might need the challenge of Olympic competition.”

【1】By using the term “natural ceiling” in Paragraph 2, Lester Keller points out that ______.

A.extreme athletes must learn special skills

B.extreme athletes have chances to take risks

C.many people don’t want to do extreme sports

D.many people can’t limit desire for extreme sports

【2】What does Shane Murphy think about the mountain climbers he mentions?

A.They put in lots of preparation for challenges.

B.They are more fortunate than other sportspeople.

C.They carry little risk when facing big challenges.

D.They have special reasons that others can’t easily understand.

【3】What main point is made in Paragraph 5?

A.Extreme athletes use techniques other people don’t use.

B.Non-athletes are probably wise not to try extreme sports.

C.Most people lack the focus required to take bigger risks.

D.A certain state of mind makes attempting an activity more likely.

【4】We can learn from the passage that ______.

A.risk-taking is something you either naturally do or avoid

B.those who take risks are more likely to be successful in life

C.extreme athletes are driven by a need to be better than others

D.taking part in extreme sports is not as difficult as people think

23、       The UK has a well-respected higher education system and some of the top universities and research institutions in the world. But to those who are new to it all, sometimes it can be confusing.

October is usually the busiest month in the college calendar. Universities have something called Freshers’ Week for their newcomers. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends, join lots of clubs and settle into university life.

However, having just left the comfort of home and all your friends behind, the prospect (前景) of meeting lots of strangers in big halls can be nerve-wracking (令人头痛的). Where do you start? Who should you make friends with? Which clubs should you join?

Luckily, there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you worrying about starting their university social life on the right foot. So just take it all in slowly. Don’t rush into anything that you’ll regret for the next three years.

Here is some top advice from past students on how to survive Freshers’ Week:

●Learn rules. Make sure you know British social etiquette (礼节). Have a few wine glasses and snacks handy for your housemates and friends.

●Be kind. Sometimes cups of tea or even slices of toast can give you a head start in making friends.

●Be sociable. The more active you are, the more likely you’ll be to meet new people than those who never leave their room.

●Bring a doorstop. Keep your door open when you’re in and that sends positive messages to your neighbors that you’re friendly.

24、It happens every spring. Flowers suddenly burst out everywhere on the same day, as if they were in tune with one another; But how exactly do plants “know” when to flower?

It is a question that has puzzled biologists for years. But according to Science Daily, a US research group may have finally answered it. The secret lies in a protein called FKF1. This allows plants to sense the differences in day lengths so that they can tell the seasons are changing.

Researchers spotted the FKF1 protein when they were studying a plant called Arabidopsis. They found that the FKF1 protein is a photoreceptor (感光器). This means it is sensitive to, and can be activated (激活) by sunlight.

Plants produce this protein every day in the late afternoon throughout the year. If there is no light at this time, for example, in winter when the sun goes down early, the protein won’t be activated. But when spring comes and the days get longer, the FKF1 protein can be activated by daylight and the plants “know” it is time to flower. “The presence of light in the late afternoon is the signal for plants that the days are getting longer and that it is the optimal (最佳的) time for flowering,” explained Takato Imaizumi, assistant professor at the University of Washington and leader of the study. This daylight-sensing system also keeps plants from flowering when conditions are poor for growing, such as during autumn or winter when the weather is cold and days are short.

Although researchers have only studied how the FKF1 protein works in the Arabidopsis, they believe that the process is similar in many other more complex plants, including crops like rice and wheat. This could be useful to the agricultural industry.

“If we can control the timing of flowering, we might be able to increase crop yield by accelerating or delaying this,” Imaizumi said. “Also, if we could control the timing of flowering in horticultural (园艺的) plants, they may be worth more commercially.”

New technology based on this research might also lead to higher yields of biofuel (生物燃料) plants. This would be helpful for providing energy.
