21、 A new study has found that cats can connect with people in the same way as dogs and children. The research, published in Current Biology, suggests the social abilities of cats to form human attachments has been greatly underestimated. The study notes that more cats live with humans than dogs do worldwide. But historically, more scientific research has centered on the social relationships between people and dogs.
The researchers designed experiments similar to methods used to measure human attachment behaviors. For example, other studies have observed how babies react to being reunited with caregivers after being separated for short periods.
About 70 cats were studied. The hehavior of the animals was observed by experts who divided them into two groups.64 percent were judged to be “securely attached”to caregivers, while 36 percent were found to be “insecurely attached.”The cats with secure attachments showed several signs of “reduced stress”levels, the study found. These cats were found to be more comfortable and effectively balanced their attention between the person and their surroundings. However, the cats with an insecure attachment showed clear signs of stress. These included shaking of the tail, repeated licking or staying completely away from the caregiver.
She added that the results showed that the level of secure and insecure attachments in cats is very close to those measured in human babies. In humans, research has found that 65 percent of babies are also securely attached to their caregivers. The researchers also were interested in finding out if socialization training would change the results.
But after a six-week training program for the cats, there were no major differences. “Once an attachment style has been established between the cat and its caregiver, it appears to remain relatively stable overtime, even after a training and socialization intervention(干预), ”Vitale said.

22、It’s become accepted that exposure to blue light — the type produced by electronic device’s screens is bad for sleep. Researchers have understood that your body is controlled by its circadian rhythms (生理时钟), which are a set of repeated physical, mental, and behavioral changes. The clearest circadian rhythm is the one that makes you tired at night and watchful during the day. This process is directed by melatonin, a chemical produced by your body when it’s dark outside. Nighttime light exposure can put this process into disorder, stopping melatonin production and keeping you awake longer. Many studies have suggested blue light is an especially powerful melatonin suppressant (抑制剂).
That thinking about blue light has led to inventions meant to stop the like “night mode” settings on your iPads or phones and glasses that people believe decrease blue light.
But a paper by a group of researchers at the University of Manchester in the U.K. printed in Current Biology challenges that belief. After exposing mice to lights that were different in color but of the same brightness and watching their following activity, the team said that yellow light actually seems to stop sleeping more than blue. Warm light, they believed, could make the body think it’s daytime, while cooler blue light more closely copies evening.
Animal studies should be accepted with a certain degree of care, as they often do not translate directly to human behavior, says Dr. Cathy Goldstein. She is a sleep expert at Michigan Medicine. Though mice are frequently used in sleep research, Goldstein notes since they are active at night, they may behave differently to light than humans do.
Goldstein agrees research on how light from electronics influences sleep hasn’t been conclusive. But she says there’s no reason not to use night mode on electronics. Just remember to turn down the brightness, she says.

23、Time management can help you excel in your studies, shine at work, and feel less stressed from day to day. But how can you make sure you’re managing your routine effectively? Following a Daily Schedule, you will totally transform your time management skills.
Identify times when you’re most productive.
【1】 It can help to know when you’re most able to use your time wisely and plan to work during those times. For example, if you find yourself energetic during the mornings, try to get the most of your work done then. During the night, you can wind down and do relaxing things you enjoy.
【2】
It can help to make a game plan for the day in the morning. As soon as you get up, think about what you need to do and sketch a rough outline of when to do it. Keep work obligations as well as social obligations in mind.
Schedule breaks and interruptions.
No one can work continuously without a break or an interruption. It’s okay to invite interruptions and distractions into your day on occasion. It can help to schedule these kinds of deviations from necessary tasks. This way, interruptions are less likely to take over and ruin your day. Schedule large breaks or interruptions in addition to tiny deviations (偏差) from your work throughout the day. 【3】 For example, say you’re writing a paper. Allow yourself five minutes to check Facebook per 500 words you write.
Get some work done on the weekends.
Weekends are important for unwinding, relaxing, and having fun, so don’t go overboard. However, it can help to do a little work on the weekend. 【4】
Stick to a sleep schedule.
If you want to manage your time, a solid sleep schedule is vital. 【5】 To maintain a sleep schedule, go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time each day, even on the weekends. Your body will adapt to your sleep or wake cycle, and you’ll begin to feel tired at your bedtime and energetic in the mornings.
A.Stay in bed all day on the weekends.
B.Eight hours sleep is very important for you.
C.You can also plan tiny interruptions during daily tasks.
D.Spend the first 30 minutes of the morning planning your day.
E.Different people are productive at different points during the day.
F.A good sleep schedule ensures you’ll wake up early in the morning and be ready for the day.
G.Think about the kind of small tasks that pile up over the weekend, making Mondays difficult.
24、I'll admit I've never quite understood the obsession (难以破除的成见) surrounding genetically modified (GM) (改变) crops. To environmentalist opponents,GM foods are simply evil,an understudied, possibly harmful tool used by big agricultural businesses to control global seed markets and beat local farmers. They argue that GM foods have never delivered on their supposed promise, that money spent on GM crops would be better channeled to organic farming and that consumers should be protected with warning labels on any products that contain genetically modified ingredients. To supporters,GM crops are a key part of the effort to sustainably provide food to meet a growing global population. But more than that, supporters see the GM opposition of many environmentalists as fundamentally anti-science,no different than those who question the basics of man-made climate change.
For both sides,GM foods seem to act as a symbol: you're pro-agricultural business or anti-science.But science is exactly what we need more of when it comes to GM foods, which is why I was happy to see Nature devote a special series of articles to the GM food controversy. The conclusion: while GM crops haven’t yet realized their initial promise and have been dominated by agricultural businesses, there is reason to continue to use and develop them to help meet the enormous challenge of sustainably feeding a growing planet.
That doesn't mean GM crops are perfect,or a one-size-fits-all solution to global agriculture problems. But anything that can increase farming efficiency—the amount of crops we can produce per acre of land—will be extremely useful.GM crops can and almost certainly will be part of that suite of tools, but so will traditional plant breeding, improved soil and crop management—and perhaps most important of all, better storage and transport infrastructure (基础设施) especially in the developing world.(It doesn't do much good for farmers in places like sub-Saharan Africa to produce more food if they can't get it to hungry consumers.) I'd like to see more non-industry research done on GM crops—not just because we'd worry less about prejudice, but also because seed companies like Monsanto and Pioneer shouldn't be the only entities (实体) working to harness genetic modification.I'd like to see GM research on less commercial crops, like corn.I don't think it's vital to label GM ingredients in food, but I also wouldn't be against it—and industry would be smart to go along with labeling, just as a way of removing fears about the technology.
Most of all, though,I wish a tenth of the energy that's spent endlessly debating GM crops was focused on those more pressing challenges for global agriculture. There are much bigger battles to fight.
【1】How do environmentalist opponents view GM foods according to the passage?
A. They will eventually ruin agriculture and the environment.
B. They are used by big businesses to dominate agriculture.
C. They have proved potentially harmful to consumers' health.
D. They pose a big threat to current farming practice.

A. It has to depend more and more on GM technology.
B. It is vital to the sustainable development of human society.
C. GM crops should be allowed until better alternatives are found.
D. Whatever is useful to improve farming efficiency should be encouraged.
【4】What does the author think of the ongoing debate around GM crops?
A. It arises out of ignorance of and prejudice against new science.
B. It distracts the public attention from other key issues of the world.
C. Efforts spent on it should be turned to more urgent issues of agriculture.
D. Neither side is likely to give in until more convincing evidence is found.
25、I am not sure if it was the crowds, the harsh lighting, the cheap fabric, or the overwhelming choices spread out before me. But last December, staring at rows of scarves in an H&M in London, I was _________. I decided to give up fast fashion for a year.
Fashion is an estimated $ 2.4 trillion industry. Fast fashion, a big portion of it, has completely _________the way we shop. Brands like H&M, Zara and Forever 21, with their quick _________to trends, speedy deliveries to stores, and ridiculously low prices, have developed faster than their competitors for years. Fast fashion is also a dirty industry, however. It is full of unsafe labor conditions and _________ resources.
Still, giving up fast fashion is not the easiest choice. I was addicted to what our fashion reporter Marc Bain calls the “sad cycle of uncontrollable shopping and _________” brought about by shopping at places such as H&M. But somewhere along the line, browsing for clothes had _________being fun and started feeling mindless. I wasn’t _________finding items I really liked. I was _________clothes as quickly as I was acquiring them. This was partly the _________of mistrusting my own fashion sense, but it was also about the way I shopped. Why care about how well-made or good-looking a piece of clothing is if you can just replace it at a minimal cost to yourself?
And so I __________to ignore the bright shop windows and glittery mannequins (人体 模型) and to bring some “mindfulness" to my wardrobe. For the most part, the shopping __________came as a relief. I began to buy things of __________quality and price, take better care of my clothes, and repair them instead of throwing them away.
However, my fast fashion-less year was __________. Toward the end of the year, I relaxed my rules and allowed myself to buy a few second-hand fast-fashion clothes at charity shops. I hope in the year ahead, with a more focused __________, I can learn how to shop better. Marc’s suggestion is to pause and ask yourself “How much do I really want this?” -- a guideline he follows to reduce his __________to the wastefulness of fast fashion.
