六、阅读理解(共3题,共 15分)

21、The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning(旋转) of the earth.

At the equator(赤道) day and night are sometimes the same length. They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o’clock in the morning and sets at 6 o’clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole(北极) is tilted(倾斜) toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere(半球) gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.

1When people talk about the number of days in a year, the “day” here means _______.

A. the time between sunrise and sunset   B. 12 hours

C. 24 hours   D. from morning to evening

2A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by _______ of the earth.

A. the pushing   B. the pulling   C. the spinning   D. the passing

3At the equator day is as long as night _______.

A. sometimes   B. never   C. usually   D. always

4When the North Pole is tilted toward the sun, the Northern Hemisphere gets _______

sunlight.

A. less   B. more   C. all   D. no

22、One evening I visited the English corner of our town. It is near our school. There are trees and flowers and a small ground. Every evening, large numbers of people go there to improve their English, but I had never been there before.

When I arrived there, many people had already been there. I looked around and found that most of them were students. Some of them were talking in English in twos and threes. To my great surprise, I even found three foreigners talking and smiling with some students who were listening with great interest. Just then, a tall student came towards me and asked, “Shall we have a talk in English?” My heart beat very fast at that moment because it was the first time for me to visit the English corner. Anyway, I said, “Yes.” Soon we talked freely about our studies, our lives, our hobbies as well as our problems of learning English. Time went fast, and it was already 11 o'clock before I realised it.

23、For many people the subject of hiccups (嗝) is a joke, but for Harry Mendes, a fifteen-year-old schoolboy from Birmingham, it was something quite different.

His hiccups began one Sunday lunch time and continued day and night for two weeks. After the first week, Harry's parents took him to hospital, but it took another week for the doctors to cure his attack.

Harry, who is now back at school, described what happened to him.

“When I began to hiccup, I drank a glass of water but that didn't do any good. That evening I had hiccups every four seconds. We tried everything to stop them. I held my breath and drank cold drinks. My father even tried to give me a shock but that didn't work either.”

After a week of sleepless nights, he went to hospital. The doctors took an X-ray of his chest but they couldn't find anything wrong.

“They gave me some medicine and my hiccups slowed down, but it was another week before the medicine worked completely and my hiccups stopped.”

Harry was very lucky. The world record holder is the American farmer Charles Osborne, who hiccupped for sixty-eight years. He stopped in 1990 at last, but nobody knows why.
