二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   For those who think that wealth can come without love, you should reconsider your position.

To get wealth, if you believe what you see in movies, seems to mean that you have to give up love because: how can people get wealth if they are afraid to roll over others who stand in their way?

I would disagree with this view because I’ve seen a bad example. Several years ago,  I knew a man who lost not only his wealth but also his respect, and at last was put into prison for deceiving (欺骗) his customers to make money. He was a man who pretended to care for the well-being of his customers who gave him their trust. He had been a man with good fame for many years, often admired and talked about as a true model of a caring business person. However, all he saw was the opportunity to deceive and make money.

But I have also seen the opposite. Some people have got great wealth too, because they first feel love towards others and start businesses that help meet other people’s growth needs. For example, people like Dale Carnegie, Anthony Robbins and other famous people who devoted their talents and lives to helping other people move forward.

And there is also another kind of wealth. Some people love others and their point of view is to help others. These people will get wealth that is not measured in dollars and cents. Instead, it is measured in caring, kindness, and the appreciation and admiration of others who they meet and deal with in their everyday life. They are quiet millionaires of life; millionaires with wealth that is not affected by the ups and downs of the stock market or the cost of daily necessities.

1The man mentioned in Para. 3 failed in the end because ______.

A.he was deceived by others B.he wasn’t good at deceiving

C.he didn’t want to help others D.he made money in a wrong way

2The underlined part“the opposite”in Para. 4 refers to those who______.

A.get wealth by helping others

B.succeed by deceiving others

C.help others but ask for nothing

D.make efforts to meet other people’s needs

3According to the author, if you love and help others, ______.

A.you will lose a lot of money

B.you won’t care about money

C.you will get another kind of wealth

D.you will make good money more easily

4What can be used as the best title of the passage?

A.Three ways to become wealthy

B.What do wealthy people have in common?

C.What kind of wealth would you rather get?

D.Loving and helping others brings you wealth

23、Underwater travel is difficult and dangerous, but many people have to stay deep under the ocean. Thus, humans have come up with a few designs of vehicles to move around under the ocean. But what if there was a better way to travel?

Hilary Bart-Smith, an engineer at the University of Virginia, thinks a vehicle that travels like a manta ray (魔鬼鱼) would be able to operate for long periods at sea. Manta rays which can grow up to 29 feet long are among the most efficient swimmers in the ocean. Different from animals and people pushing against water, manta rays swim by moving through the water with wing-like movements of their fins (鳍). Efficiency means using less energy to move farther.

Bart-Smith and other engineers at the University of Virginia had to find out what manta rays looked like on the inside to better understand how they move. They took X-rays to find out how a manta ray’s fins are built. They found that a web of cartilage (软骨) stretches across each fin.

Once the engineers knew how a manta ray’s fin was constructed, they could build one of their own. They made a long row of metal struts with many hinges to imitate the manta ray’s web of cartilage. The engineers put their design inside a flexible cover, shaped like a manta ray’s fin. Then they tested it in the university swimming pool. They were happy to see that it swam just like a manta ray in the ocean.

Engineers and scientists are still learning and experimenting with how to imitate these amazing animals. For now, engineers study their movements and learn from the most efficient swimmers in the ocean. Perhaps someday engineers will be able to build manta ray robots that are big enough to transport people.

【1】How do man ta rays swim?

D.By pushing against water like animals.

【2】What can we learn from the second and third paragraphs?

C.To protect marine creatures.

D.To design undersea vehicles.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards the research?

24、   We have long known that, for particular skills, people tend to rate themselves incorrectly. In a famous study in 1981, researchers asked people to rate their driving ability. More than 90 percent considered themselves above average. Of course, some people who think they are above average drivers really are. But the 90 percent statistic shows that many people inflate how they compare with others. In fact, only 50 percent of people can rate above average.

So when are people likely to be overconfident in how they rank? And when are they underconfident? Spencer Greenberg of Clear Thinking and his team conducted a study and asked people where they ranked on 100 skills.

For each skill, participants were asked how they thought they compared with others on the platform who shared their age and gender (性别), and lived in their area. If, on average, people thought they could outperform more than 50 percent of others at the task, that suggests systematic overconfidence. If, however, people thought they would outperform less than 50 percent, that's evidence of underconfidence.

There was great variation in how people assessed their relative skills at a task. On average, people rated themselves better than 75 percent of others in their ability to use a computer, for example. But people rated themselves better than only 32 percent of others in their ability to knit (编织) a sweater.

Next, the researchers found that people tend to be overconfident when it comes to tasks that are viewed as easy and underconfident when it comes to tasks that are viewed as hard. People overestimate (高估) how they compare with others in cutting up vegetables but underestimate where they rank in their ability to recite the alphabet backward.

Also, the more experienced people are at a task, the more people tend to be overconfident. People tend to be overconfident in their skill at frying an egg, which most people have done multiple times, and underconfident in their ability to paint a portrait (画像), which most people have rarely tried.

1What does the underlined word “inflate” in Paragraph 1 mean?

A.Overstate. B.Imagine. C.Reconsider. D.Evaluate.

2What percentage of people do the participants think they can beat at computer operation?

A.32%. B.50%. C.75%. D.90%.

3In which skill do many participants rate themselves better than others?

A.Knitting a sweater. B.Painting a portrait.

C.Cutting up vegetables. D.Reciting the alphabet backward.

4What might happen as people gain experience of a thing?

A.They tend to lose interest in it.

B.Their skill increases at a rapid pace.

C.They want to try more challenging things.

D.Their confidence rises faster than their skill.
