21、Directions:Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Every Little Bit Counts?

One of the weapons in the fight against poverty is microcredit also called microlending). Microcredit is the practice of giving very small, short-term loans to poor people.【1】 The loans help the borrowers start or upgrade small businesses. Microcredit organizations assume that poor people can lift themselves out of poverty if they only have access to standard financial services.

Grameen Bank, started as a project in 1976, is a pioneer of microcredit.【2】 Borrowers often have no steady job no other property, and no one to co-sign on the loan - common requirements for getting a loan elsewhere. Grameen Bank promotes credit as a human right, and with a 98% repayment rate, it seems to have helped its borrowers improve their lives and made a profit through interest in the meantime.

Successes like Grameen Bank and others caused governments and NGOs to rush to fund microcredit operations. How wonderful to imagine that the cure for poverty could be profitable! However, recent studies question how effective microcredit really is. Critics say that poor people with enoughentrepreneurial(创业的) drive to get a loan would have succeeded anyway. Those without the drive don't end up in better circumstances after paying back loans, which aren’t always used for businesses. 【3】 And though microcredit is described as a way to empower women, some say the loans aren’t causing any measurable improvement in women’s lives.

The ideas behind microcredit are uplifting: that all humans are filled with potentials and that one small bit of assistance can help a whole family live better. 【4】 Time and close study will tell if microcredit is really the miracle it appears to be.

A.They also say that without a basic education, poor borrowers aren't equipped to manage the businesses they create.

B.In general, the loans are 100 USD or less, usually paid back within six months.

C.Borrowers need to provide the credit history, which the lenders will use as the criteria when evaluating a loan.

D.They may, however, ignore systematic causes of large-scale poverty.

E.Most microcredit agencies are struggling as the vast majority of loans are not paid back.

F.It has given out more than eight billion dollars in loans to people who could never borrow money otherwise.

22、Who Owns the Moon?

Within the next ten years, the US, China, Israel, and a crowd of private companies plan to set up camp on the moon. So if and when they plant a flag, does that give them property rights?

A NASA working group hosted a discussion this week to ask: Who owns the moon? The answer, of course, is no use. The Outer Space Treaty, the international law signed by more than 100 countries, states that the moon and other celestial bodies(天体) are the province of all mankind. No doubt that would annoy all of the people throughout the ages, like monks from the Middle Ages, who have tried to claim the moon was theirs.

But ownership is different from property rights. People who rent apartments, for example, don’t own where they live, but they still hold rights. So with all of the upcoming missions(派遣团) to visit the moon and beyond, space industry thought leaders are seriously asking themselves how to deal with a potential land rush.

“This is a very relevant discussion right now. We’ve got this wave of new lunar missions from around the world,” said William Marshall, a scientist in the small-spacecraft office at NASA, but who spoke this week at an event hosted by NASA’s Co Lab, a collaborative(协力的) public-private working group. He was peaking from his personal interest and not on behalf of the agency.

To be sure, the United States aims to send astronauts back to the moon by as early as 2015, in a mission that would include a long-term settlement. China and Israel, among others, are also working on lunar projects. And for the first time, several private groups are building spacecraft to land on the moon in an attempt to win millions of dollars in the Google Lunar X Prize. Some participants say that they plan to gain some property rights in the mission.

【1】In the passage the writer seems to be worrying that   .

A. the US will live on the moon forever

B. the moon will not be able to hold all mankind

C. the potential land rush will become more and more frequent

D. no one can answer the question “Who owns the moon?”

【2】The “Google Lunar X Prize” aims to   .

A. encourage private groups to land on the moon

B. help NASA host a discussion about land rush on the moon

C. help some developing countries complete their lunar projects

D. reward some countries or private groups which haven’t stepped on the moon

【3】The underlined word “that” in the first paragraph refers to   .

A. the Outer Space Treaty B. if and when they plant a flag

C. the NASA working group D. monks from the Middle Ages

【4】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A. The US astronauts will live on the moon for a longer time.

B. Many countries and private groups plan to go to the moon.

C. Why some private groups wish to land on the moon.

D. It is easy to gain some property rights on the moon.

23、Choice, we are given to believe, is a right. But for a good many people, choice gives birth to anxiety. Interested in the idea “too many choices are dizzy”. I have been conducting an experiment. 【1】

When presented with a menu in a restaurant, I’ll only consider the first few options on each page. I know, it sounds crazy. 【2】 I used to read the menu a long time instead of sitting back and talking to my dining companion. These days I quickly select the best-sounding dishes and then chat and eat. In doing so, I find myself trying new things. The other night, for example, I ordered a smoked chicken salad. If I had permitted myself to glance further down the list, this would never have happened. But guess what? 【3】 So limiting my choices can sometimes lead me to a wider range of experiences.

【4】 I can now access many films and TV series, yet after ten minutes of looking through apps and menus, I will more often than not find myself watching whatever Channel 4 has scheduled at 9 pm. So before I even turn on the TV, I ask myself: what do I want to watch? I think of a program. Then I just watch it.

This devotion to a simpler set of possibilities came in handy when our summer holiday to America was COVID-canceled. I didn’t go through a million TripAdvisor reviews for the best replacements. I simply went on Airbnb, saw what in England was still available and immediately booked the one I could afford. 【5】 And now I can actually focus on enjoying our holiday.

A.It was delicious.

B.It never proved worth a try.

C.But it’s actually quite liberating.

D.It interprets a lifestyle: less is more.

E.The same applies to home entertainment.

F.In doing so, I saved myself days of travel anxiety.

G.I’ve been expanding the choices I allow myself to have.

24、Spend five minutes in a tropical city and you'll be running into the nearest air-conditioned refuge. In some countries across Asia, air conditioning (AC) is increasingly being considered a necessity. But one architecture firm, T3 Architecture Asia, is trying to use a different way to keep cool. The firm has offices in Vietnam and France, which specializes in back — to — basics “bio-climatic architectures. By making use of the climate and vegetation(植物), the   firm can naturally create a comfortable indoor climate.

In cooperation with the World Bank, the company built an affordable apartment building in Ho Chi Minh City, which houses 350 families in a neighborhood where AC bills are to be avoided.

Covered open-air corridors(走廊), ventilated(通风的)roofs, fiber-glass insulation(隔热材料)and the use of natural materials meant the building offered both natural light and ventilation.

"We try to avoid big glass facades(正面)facing east or west, because that would make the building like an oven (烤炉)in a tropical climate, the manager of the firm, Gallavardin, said. "If you can take advantage of the main wind stream and have smart sun-protection equipment, you can do it — you can really design buildings that need no air conditioning in a hot place.”

Gallavardin explained that the temperature in a typical bio-climatic T3 building is naturally about 22℃, cooler than the outside temperature, with the ceiling fan doing the rest of the work. Since the first project, Gallavardin has built several luxurious bio-climatic hotels, a concept restaurant, and even his own green office for the T3 team.

In China, American architecture firm Perkins &Will took a bio-climatic approach to the new Shanghai Natural History Museum—while the building provides air conditioning in gallery areas to protect the artworks from humidity. It also has automated windows and skylights to naturally ventilate public areas.

【1】How does the firm make the building comfortable in hot weather?

A.By using electric fans on the ceilings.

B.By using the weather and plants around.

C.By using a special kind of technology.

D.By asking the families to live together.

【2】What is the advantage for families living in the apartment building in Ho Chi Minh City?

A.They feel like a big family.

B.The building is free of charge.

C.They can take care of each other.

D.They don't have to pay for AC.

【3】What will happen to the building if big glass facades face cast or west in a tropical climate?

A.The building will become very hot.

B.The building will let in more fresh air.

C.The building will become much cooler.

D.The building will need no air conditioning.

【4】What could be the best title for the text?

A.Green Solutions to Cool Buildings.

B.Buildings Without Air Conditioning.

C.Strange Ways to Put up Buildings.

D.Air Conditioning Being a Necessity.
