二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、The candidate longing for election to the highest office in the United States must be native-born American citizen who is at least 35 years old and who has lived in the United States for at least 14 years. The election course is complicated, and the road to the Oval Office is long.

Potential candidates must present papers stating their intention to seek their party's recommendation; delegates then choose from among those running some months later at the national conferences. Before that, however, each state holds a primary election that determines how the state's votes want the party's delegates to vote. Methods of choosing the delegates vary from state to state. At the conferences, there are speeches and often heated discussions. It may take several rounds of voting before delegates can agree on a candidate. On the final day of the meeting, the presidential candidate announces his or her choice for vice president.

Election Day, by law, is the Tuesday that follows the first Monday in November. On this day, registered votes may cast their votes for president, vice president, and candidates for other federal, state, and local offices. The popular vote, however, does not determine who will be president. The president is chosen by a vote of the Electoral College, a group of 538 citizens from the 50 states and the District of Columbia who are chosen to cast votes for the president and vice president.

The rules for choosing electors, as with the delegates, vary. Each state also decides whether its electoral votes must reflect the popular vote. The number of electors in each state is determined by the number of representatives and senators that a state sends to Congress and, therefore, may change every 10 years, depending on the results of the United States census. The winner must get at least 270 of the electoral votes when the Electoral College meets in December of the electron year. The election results are not official, however, until the following January, when Congress meets in a joint conference to count the electoral votes.

At the end of the road to the Oval Office is the swearing-in ceremony, at which the new or reelected president takes the oath of office on January 20.

22、Have you ever had one of those days when all you wanted to do was read an emotionally powerful story that would cause you to tears? Most of us tend to be attracted by stories that reach us on multiple levels, including sadness. There are plenty of books that make you cry (and sometimes laugh) and that you can really sink your teeth into. Here are four of them.

1. The Kite Runner

This realistic and moving description of life in Afghanistan accounts for the people who were badly affected by the Taliban. You’ll cry as you get to know the familial relationships and cruelty involved, but you’ll also get a sense of hope as you quickly read through this appealing novel.

2. The Book Thief

Let’s put it this way: Death itself is the narrator. The story is about a young girl named Liesel who has to live with foster parents during World War II. On the way to her new home, her brother dies, setting the gloomy tone for the story. There is hope, however, when Liesel discovers her love for reading and makes a relationship with a young Jewish man she helps hide from the Nazis.

3. The Fault in Our Stars

This is probably the most likely book on the list to make you cry, as it records the experiences of teens who are dying from cancer and living their last days in love. Their lifestyle is tragic and disturbing at the same time, as we watch their health worsen. The real tragedy is the love story between the main characters, who know that their romance is fruitless.

4. A Child Called “It”

Easily one of the saddest stories of abuse in recent decades, A Child Called It is based on the true story of Dave Pelzer, a boy from California who suffered at the hands of his cruel family. The tears will come from both sadness and the inspiration tied to Dave’s fight for survival in an environment where he is believed worthless.

1What do the four books have in common?

A. They are all about cruel wars.

B. They all probably make you cry.

C. They are all about suffering children.

D. They are all adapted from true stories.

2Which book is about a young victim whose family treated him cruelly?

A. The Kite Runner   B. A Child Called “It”

C. The Fault in Our Stars   D. The Book Thief

3The passage is intended to __________.

A. advise us to buy some books   B. inspire us to read more

C. explain why we love reading   D. introduce some moving books

23、Rene Compean had hiked the park near his home in Southern California many times. But after exploring a new path last April, he was lost.

With no flashlight, only a little water and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean climbed to a spot where he found at least one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. The shot showed his dirty legs hanging over a number of steep rocks. All Compean could do then was to wait and hope.

Sixty miles away in Ventura, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a tweet from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, showing an unclear image of a man’s legs. The sheriff’s search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the photo to the public, hoping someone might know the location.

When he saw the unclear picture, he pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. The first thing he noticed in Compean’s photo was patches of greenery. After comparing it to the satellite map, Kuo realized something: He’s got to be on the south side because there’s not really any green valleys on the north side.

That finding tightened his search, leading him to an area that resembled the place in the image. The final step was cross-referencing(相互参照) the original photo with 3D images of the area from Google Earth. The locations matched!

He quickly called the sheriff’s department with the latitude and longitude supplied by Google Earth. Soon, a search-and-rescue team helicopter was in the air, hovering above Compean.

After spending 27 hours alone in the wilderness, Compean cried, “I’m safe!”

Sgt. John Gilbert in the sheriff’s department thought Compean’s story probably would have ended very differently had a total stranger with strong satellite skills and a sharp eye for detail not taken action.

【1】Why did Rene Compean get lost?

A.Something was wrong with his legs.

B.He didn’t have a flashlight and water.

C.He was not familiar enough with the path.

D.His phone failed to work well in signaling.

【2】Which of the following best described Rene Compean after he got lost?

A.Calm.

B.Thrilled.

C.Tired.

D.Adventurous.

【3】What mainly contributed to Compean’s successful rescue?

A.Google Earth’s supply of location.

B.The Sheriff’s Department’s rescue effort.

C.Compean’s previous kindness towards others.

D.The stranger’s kindness and his satellite skills.

【4】What can be inferred from the text?

A.Compean likes exploring unfamiliar paths.

B.The stranger found the right location without effort.

C.Technology has become increasingly significant in our lives.

D.Hiking without full preparation can surely lead to trouble.

24、She turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent her away. No way, not me anyway. Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before. "We're moving house.” "No space for her any more with the baby coming." "We never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present." People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.

I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air of sadness about her. There was nothing I could do to make her happy, it seemed. Heaven knows what had happened to her at her former owner's. But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by my side, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire.

That's why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk. We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting very restless. Eventually I couldn't hold her any longer and she raced off down the road towards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.

By the time I reached the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking () the four puppies (幼犬) I started to feel sympathy towards them. "We didn't know what had happened to her," said the woman at the door. "I took her for a walk one day, soon after the puppies were born, and she just disappeared." "She must have tried to come back to them and got lost," added a boy from behind her.

I must admit I do miss Goldie, but I've got Nugget now, and she looks just like her mother. And I've learnt a good lesson: not to judge people.

A. time   B. effectiveness

C. importance   D. complexity
