二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Just watching an Olympic figure skater making a series of spins (旋转) is enough to make you a little dizzy on your couch at home. So how do the athletes themselves manage to slide out of it without collapsing?

To answer that, it’s necessary to understand what causes dizziness in the first place. It starts in your inner ear’s vestibular (前庭的) system, which contains three semicircle canals filled with liquid. Inside the liquid are hair cells. When you move, the liquid moves, stimulating the hair cells to send messages to your brain about your movement, giving us a sense of balance. However, when we stop spinning, the liquid continues to move due to inertia (惯性), confusing your brain to believe that you are still moving, causing you to feel dizzy. Figure skaters aren’t immune to these effects; their inner ears don’t behave any differently from us. No one can train those fluids not to obey the laws of inertia, said Paul DiZio, a neuroscientist at Brandeis University who studies balance, motion and dizziness.

According to Dizio, when Olympic-level figure skaters prepare for high-speed spinning, they accommodate to an entire set of sensory inputs, habituating the brain to sensation of dizziness. This all, comes down to years of practicing. New figure skaters still get dizzy and their sense of balance. Nevertheless, coaches will teach tricks that can potentially help the figure skaters not to lose balance, such as fixing their gaze at one point at the end of their spin or maintaining a uniform speed.

Skaters also have their own tricks to help them reposition themselves after spins. Bradie Tennell, a number of 2018’s bronze medal-winning U. S. Olympic team, told TODAY that she tended to make brief shut-eyes repeatedly right after a spin. And just because a skater is used to shaking off dizziness doesn’t mean they’re completely immune. Tennell said “I will get dizzy if spin after several days off, but still probably less dizzy than you’d feel.”

【1】What can be the key factor to cause dizziness?

A.The canals.

B.The brain.

C.The liquid.

D.The hair cells.

【2】How do high-level figure skaters avoid dizziness?

A.By spinning fast without opening their eyes.

B.By changing the spinning speed alternatively

C.By adapting the brain to dizziness through practice.

D.By inputting signals of senses in their accommodations.

【3】What do Tennell’s words imply?

A.Professional skaters don’t feel as dizzy as we think.

B.Sustained dizziness can be relieved by having a rest.

C.Professional skaters can avoid dizziness permanently.

D.Suspended practice leads to the returning of dizziness.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.How Can We Overcome Dizziness?

B.How Can Figure Skaters Make Circles Fast?

C.What Makes Figure Skaters Different From Others?

D.Why Don’t Figure Skaters Get Dizzy When Spinning?

22、Dear Ms.Smith,

It is with great interest and enthusiasm that I am applying for the arts education internship (实习)advertised in Sundays New York Times. This position is exactly what I am looking for and an ideal opportunity for me to use my knowledge, educational background, and experience.

My arts education at Pratt Institute has helped me develop a firm foundation in the arts. The courses I have completed at Pratt, along with my study abroad in Paris, has prepared me well for a position in arts education.I have always enjoyed a passion for the arts but my undergraduate (本科)education has taken my interest to a whole new level.I not only enjoy doing art but I find myself even more enthusiastic when I have the opportunity to teach what I have learned.

For the past two summers I have worked directly with children at CityArts. These experiences were amazing since my responsibilities included planning and directing major projects that were planned for the summer program that goes on each year for local children interested in the arts.I was given a concept at the beginning of each summer and I had complete control of how the projects were to be completed. The children were the creative force and often were the inspiration for the artwork that was eventually presented to the public.

I am very excited about the summer opportunity with the Children’s Museum of the Arts since I know that I can definitely make a positive contribution while doing what I love, teaching art to children.I will contact you in one week to discuss my candidacy(候选资格)and see if you have any questions about my education or experience.Thank you for your time and consideration.

23、Abbey Ahern, 34, who lives in Oklahoma, was shocked and heartbroken when she was told at her 19-week scan that her daughter had the incurable illness anencephaly (无脑畸形) which meant she would not live beyond a few hours. It ripped her heart out.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the illness means the baby has an underdeveloped brain and incomplete skull (颅骨). Approximately one in 10,000 babies in the US are born with anencephaly, most of which result in early death.

As a result, Abbey and her pilot husband Robert, also 34, decided to have a live birth so that they could spend time with their daughter and donate her organs — making Annie the first newborn baby donor in the state.

Afterwards they asked the doctor for the gender of their unborn child and decided to name her on the spot. They named her easily: Annie, which means, “grace”. Abbey said: “Carrying a seriously-ill baby to term was by far the most difficult thing I have ever done…For us, even in the middle of our terrible heartbreak we were able to see so much beauty.” The family spent just 14 hours and 58 minutes with Annie before she passed away.

Her organs were not available for transplant (移植) because her oxygen levels were too low — which Abbey said was “disappointing”— but they were able to donate her heart valves (瓣膜) and some of her organs could be used for research. She said: “Annie’s story is one of hope. I think it shows people that in the middle of tragedy, there can be beauty.”

【1】How did Abbey feel at the news about her daughter firstly?

A.Surprised and upset.

B.Worried and determined.

C.Relieved and regretful.

D.Curious and angry.

【2】What was Abbey and her husband’s decision?

A.Keeping Annie in hospital.

B.Stopping giving birth to Annie.

C.Giving away Annie’s organs.

D.Naming her daughter after beauty.

【3】Why were Annie’s organs not used for transplant?

A.Because of diseases.

B.Because of low temperature.

C.Because of heart valves.

D.Because of lack of oxygen.

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To call on people to donate organs.

B.To share a touching story with readers.

C.To inform people of what anencephaly is.

D.To show what a tragedy the story is.

24、   Our family is very familiar with wild animals. We lived in the mountains. There were a number of things we were taught as children that most “city folk’ don’t understand. Here are a few stories between us and wild animals.

I think I was 15 when this happened. It was 5:30am on a cold winter morning . It had just started to snow heavily, and I went out to feed the chickens in my back yard . I don’t know why the door of the yard was open that night. At daybreak, my father came in and asked me if I had seen anything unusual. I replied that I hadn’t . He took me out and showed me bear tracks right next to mine .Obviously, the bear had been frightened of me and left. I wasn’t brave , it was good luck for me.

A few years ago, my husband, father and I went up to Mountain Baldy . At the top, many people were enjoying picnics. Some deer came wandering out , and some people fed them. Some even tried to pet them .We also gave them some food. When they went into the woods, some people followed them.

Our next door neighbor even fed a wolf. She offered her dog food and put out table scraps.(剩食物). The animal came on time for the foods. No matter how we tried to get her to stop , she couldn’t. Wildlife is just wild. Feeding it doesn’t really help it. Feeding it isn’t safe for you ; you could be attacked especially by the fierce wild animals.

1Why did the author say he was lucky that early morning?

A.After he left the bear went to the back yard.

B.The bear couldn’t get close to him as the yard door closed.

C.The bear has left long before he went to the back yard.

D.The bear feared him and left before he knew.

2Why were many people at the top of Mount Baldy?

A.To play games.

B.To feed deer.

C.To have a picnic.

D.To watch the deer.

3The author writes this passage only to tell us _________.

A.it is not safe for people to feed wild animals.

B.some stories between people and wild animals.

C.we should do something to protect wild animals.

D.people are sometimes unsafe in the mountainous area.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have loads of friends. He showed off a lot, always talking about how many friends he had at school, and how he was so friendly with everyone else.

One day his grandfather said to him, “Mario, I bet you a big bag of popcorn that you don’t have as many friends as you think. I’m sure many of them are nothing more than companions, acquaintances, or partners in crime.”

Mario accepted the bet without hesitation. However, he wasn’t sure how he could test whether or not his schoolmates were real friends, so he asked his grandpa. The old man answered, “I have just exactly what you need. It’s in the attic. Wait here a minute.”

Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. “Take it. It’s a very special chair. It’s rather tricky to sit on because it’s invisible, but if you take it to your school and you manage to sit on it, you’ll activate its magic and you’ll be able to tell who your real friends are.”

Mario, brave and determined, took the strange invisible chair and set off for school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. “Don’t move. You’re about to see something amazing.”

And Mario attempted to sit on the chair. Having difficulty seeing it, he missed and fell straight onto his backside. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. “Wait, wait, just a slight technical problem,” he said, making another attempt. But again he missed the seat, causing more surprised looks, and a few catcalls. Mario wouldn’t be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground… until, suddenly, he tried again and didn’t fall. This time he sat, staying in mid-air—some friends were standing behind him.

注意;1. 续写词数应为150左右;
