But they also can be helpful by finding that perfect spot in the house for you to do your homework and keeping supplies, like pencils, on hand. Parents also can cut down on distractions, like noisy younger brothers and sisters!

Teachers also are important resources for you because they can give you advice specific to the assignment you’re having trouble with. Teachers can give you study tips and offer ideas about how to do your homework. 【3】

You can also use the Internet to visit online homework help sites. These sites can direct you to good sources for research and offer tips and guidance about many academic subjects. But be cautious about just copying information from an Internet website. 【4】 Therefore, talk with your teacher about how to use these sources properly.

27、Hungarian Jewish activist Rezso Kasztner, a brilliant, self-confident lawyer and journalist was directly responsible for liberating 1, 684 Jews on a train to Switzerland.

Struggling to save the Hungarian Jews,by the war ended, he had preserved some 100,000 more lives by bargaining (讨价还价) with the Nazis, including Adolf Eichman and Kurt Becher among other officers. He did this by making use of the Nazi weaknesses of greed and need “blood for goods”. Kasztner offered money, jewelry and the promise of war materiel (物资) that he knew could never be delivered in exchange for Jewish lives. He and the other activists were able to save only a small number of their people, as nearly half a million Hungarians.

Jews were sent to Auschwitz to be killed in just few months. The selection of those who were saved, especially on the train, had bothered Kasztner ever since.

After the war, Kasztner and his family emigrated to Israel, where he expected to be welcomed as a hero. Instead, they found tension between settlers and refugees (难民), and because Kasztner had to pretend to make friends with Nasis, he was attacked as a Nazi collaborator (勾结者). When he charged one of his accusers (a man who was jealous (嫉妒) of him back in Hungary) with libel (谤罪), the judge ruled against him because of the struggle for power between the political parties in Israel.

The real Rezso Kasztner was an extraordinary man who played a high-risk game with the devil. And he won in the only game of saving human lives. He achieved more in his way than any other individual in Nazi-occupied Europe. In the end all he lost was his own life.

【1】What can we learn about Rezso Kasztner from the passage?

【2】What did Kasztner expect when he emigrated to Israel?

A.To receive a hero's welcome.

B.To be sheltered by Nazis.

C.To get more support.

D.To save more people.

【3】The court ruled against Kasztner in Israel because he ________.

A.was a Nazi collaborator

B.defended the Nazis as a lawyer

C.declared the law of Israel unjust

D.got caught in Israeli political conflict

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.A man’s heroic deeds in saving Hungarian Jews.

B.The crimes committed by the Nazis.

28、Deforestation (滥伐森林) last year rose to the highest level since 2015 in Brazil’s Cerrado, prompting scientists on Monday to raise alarm over the state of the world’s most species-rich savanna (热带草原), a major carbon sink that helps to hold off climate change.

The Cerrado, which spreads across several states of Brazil and is one of the world’s largest savannas, is often called an “upside-down forest” because of the deep roots its plants sink into the ground to survive seasonal droughts and fires.

Deforestation and other clearances of native plants in the Cerrado rose 8 percent to 8,531 square kilometers in the 12 months through July, Brazil’s official period for measuring deforestation, according to national space research agency INPE. That is more than 10 times the size of New York City’s land area of 783.84 square km.

“It’s extremely worrying,” said Mercedes Bustamante, an ecologist at the University of Brasilia. Bustamante also criticized the government for a lack of transparency in announcing the deforestation data on New Year’s Eve.

The added destruction is particularly concerning. Roughly half of the Cerrado has been destroyed since the 1970s, mostly for farming and ranching (牧场经营). “You’re transforming thousands of square kilometers annually,” said Manuel Ferreira, a geographer at the Federal University of Goias. “Few other places on earth have seen that rapidity of a transformation.”

Ferreira said that new plant and animal species are regularly being discovered in the Cerrado but he added that many are probably being eradicated before they can be studied.

After falling from highs in the early 2000s, deforestation in the Cerrado has been increasing again since right-wing President took office in 2019, calling for more farming and development in sensitive ecosystems. Bustamante and other scientists blame the President for encouraging deforestation with his pro-development rhetoric and for rolling back environmental enforcement.

【1】Why is Cerrado called “upside-down forest”?

A.Because of its large size.

B.Because of seasonal droughts and fires.

C.Because of the existence of the deep roots.

D.Because of its fast deforestation.

【2】What do the figures in paragraph 3 show?

A.The large size of Cerrado.

B.The fast pace of deforestation.

C.The small area of New York City.

D.Brazil’s measures to protect savannas.

【3】What does the underlined word “eradicated” in paragraph 6 mean?

A.Extinguished.

B.Transformed.

C.Conveyed.

D.Powered.

【4】Which of the following statement is related to the President’s policy?

A.Transforming forests to farms.

B.Returning farmlands to forests.

C.Calling on more people to protect forests.

D.Trying to protect the environment at any cost.

29、As COVID-19 broke out and spread in the world, many countries are changing their social habits to reduce the risk of spreading the novel coronavirus(新型冠状病毒). Here are some of the ways that greeting habits are changing around the world.

French etiquette(礼仪) expert Philippe Lichtfus said that simply looking into a person's eyes can be enough as a greeting.

Spain

The outbreak could also hit one of Spain's most important traditions—in the week before Easter, known as Holy Week, the faithful (信徒) queue up to kiss the hands or feet of sculptures of the Virgin Mary and the saints, seeking their protection. It's said that the ceremony could be banned.

One Good Deed Deserves Another

When I was young, I lived in a small village in Melaka. The spirit of neighborliness was very strong then. The village had a variety of trades to serve the needs of the villagers. There was a barber, a tailor, a coffee shop owner, a grocer (食品杂货商), and so on. All of us were quite poor but we got by. However, one family which could be considered as living a marginal existence was the Lim family living in the bicycle shop opposite our dwelling.

Mr. Lim, the bicycle mechanic, had a large brood of children — six to be exact. My mother was a kind-hearted soul. Often, she would remark that his children were dressed in ragged (破旧的) clothes and looked malnourished (营养不良的). My family was relatively better off so my parents would take over whatever food we could spare to the Lim family.

I remember one particular year when times were very hard. Even my family had to make do with just two meals a day, so we stopped giving food to Mr. Lim. One day, I noticed my mother looking troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. She decided to sacrifice a portion of our meals to the family, despite the protests from my brothers that were too hungry. Fortunately, the lean spell did not last long, and the children started to get our three meals a day again.

As time went by, the number of customers using Lim’s shop increased rapidly, which was delightful. Business took off like a rocket because Japanese bikes were very useful and popular for transport. The Lim family was much better off than before.

It was at this time that my father’s health started to get worse. We were confused by the mysterious illness he was suffering from. He paid less attention to his shop and business got worse. My father had to sell our family car to pay off the mounting bills. My brothers and I had to stop schooling because we could not afford the fees.
