二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、We all know cameras. But have you heard of Google’s new camera? It is a small, smart device, called Clips. It comes with a case that has a clip, but it’s not designed to be worn on your clothing. Most interestingly, it uses artificial intelligence to take photography out of your hands so it can capture moments on its own.

This roughly 2-inch by 2-inch camera, with a three-hour battery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness, is intended for candid moments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smart phone.

Onboard the Clips device, it uses machine learning algorithms to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition. “Once it learns that there’s a face you see frequently, it’ll try to get nice photos of those faces,” said Juston Payne, the device’s product manager. And they also want it to recognize facial expressions, which involved “training it to know what happiness looks like”. The Google team also trained it to recognize what not to shoot—like when a child’s hand is over the lens, or if it is tossed in a dark purse.

The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone, as it has no screen for viewing or editing.

Did people think it was strange? Yes, Payne admitted. But they said they addressed that by making it obvious what it is. A green light on the front signals that the device is on. Besides, unlike a camera meant to monitor your home, it is not connected to the Internet.

“This product is only possible because of the way that technology has advanced,” Payne said. It was only in the past year or so that they could squeeze the technology down into a device this size. Going forward, we’re likely to get more assistance from the artificial intelligence packed into our apps and gadgets.

28、   Move over, helicopter parents. “Snowplow(扫雪机)parents” are the newest reflection of an intensive(强化的)parenting style that can include parents booking their adult children haircuts, texting their college kids to wake them up so they don’t sleep through a test, and even calling their kids’ employers.

Helicopter parenting, the practice of wandering anxiously near one’s children, monitoring their every activity, is so 20th century. Some rich mothers and fathers now are more like snowplows: machines moving ahead, clearing any difficulties in their children’s path to success, so they don’t have to suffer failure, frustration (挫折) or lose opportunities.

It starts early, when parents get on wait lists for excellent preschools before their babies are born and try to make sure their kids never do anything that may frustrate them. It gets more intense when school starts: running forgotten homework to school or calling a coach to request that their children make the team.

Rich parents may have more time and money to devote to making sure their children don’t ever meet with failure, but it’s not only rich parents practicing snowplow parenting. This intensive parenting has become the most welcome way to raise children, regardless of income, education, or race.

Yes, it’s a parent’s job to support the children, and to use their adult wisdom to prepare for the future when their children aren’t mature(成熟的) enough to do so. That’s why parents hide certain toys from babies to avoid getting angry or take away a teenager’s car keys until he finishes his college applications.

But snowplow parents can take it too far, some experts say. If children have never faced a difficulty, what happens when they get into the real world?

“Solving problems, taking risks and overcoming frustration are key life skills,” many child development experts say, “and if parents don’t let their children experience failure, the children don’t gain them.”

1What do we know about snowplow parenting?

A.It appeared before helicopter parenting.

B.It costs parents less than helicopter parenting.

C.It was a typical phenomenon of the 20th century.

D.It provides more than enough services for children.

2Why does the author mention parents’ taking away car keys?

A.To show teenagers are no better than babies.

B.To advise teenagers not to treat their cars as toys.

C.To advise parents not to buy cars for their teenagers.

D.To show it’s correct to help children when necessary.

3What’s the possible result of snowplow parenting according to the experts?

A.Children lacking problem-solving ability in reality.

B.Children mastering more key life skills than parents.

C.Children gaining great success in every aspect of life.

D.Children meeting no problems or frustration after growing up

29、Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand different.

According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as many as 40 percent of them put vloggers as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.

This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach the audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.

In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting(交流) with their fans about everyday life.

However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame(名声) and fortunes. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.

Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but that allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that’s enough for him.

【1】Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers?

A.Traditional jobs are not creative enough.

B.The Internet make it easier to be a show star.

C.They are eager to communicate with others.

D.The Hollywood studios develop too slowly.

【2】What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?

A.Being a vlogger is not a good career.

B.A vlogger cannot earn fame or fortunes.

C.Not all vloggers can be successful.

D.Dreams will come true one day.

【3】Why does Israeli David Leshaw run the Finishers Club?

A.To be a popular star.

B.To earn a lot of money.

C.To meet more friends.

D.To share his hobby.

【4】Which of the following is suitable title for the text?

A.Great influence of Internet on young Britons’ career choice.

B.Social media’s great impact on young people’s daily life.

C.To be vloggers, to be rich and respected.

D.To be a vlogger, or not to be-that is a question.

五、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A worried call came into Jimmy Gill’s bar this past March. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the beach bar couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash-but her wedding ring was put inside.

Gill didn’t like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours scanning footage(影片片段)from 16 different surveillance(监控),cameras, watching the woman’s every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Within minutes, a young man in a jacket approached the bench, put something hurried in his pocket, and walked off. Gill posted a clip on the bar’s Facebook page. “I didn’t want to accuse him, ” he said. “I just asked if anybody knew who the guy was.”

Within hours, Gill got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who’d heard about the post from one of his friends. Prather admitted having taken the wallet and told Gill he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the dock (码头)into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.

Gill, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the dock. There, they got to talking, and Prather revealed that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gill, a father of two with another on the way, look closely at Prather-his small build, his pale cheeks-and saw him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal.

But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing charges. “He would be going to jail,” Gill says. “I had to help him somehow.”
