27、 You have just won ten million yuan in a lottery (彩票) - how would you spend it? Before you know it, ten minutes had gone on daydreaming. There is a time and a place for daydreaming, but we don't have much control over that.Isn't it worrying that an estimated 30 to 50 percent of our waking time is spent daydreaming? What if your dentist is having that lottery daydream while removing your rotten tooth?
Some studies suggest daydreaming makes us unhappy because we are not focusing on what is around us but are instead thinking about the past or future. However, a recent study published in the journal Neuropsychologica finds that mind-wandering can be of benefit to us.The researchers measured the brain patterns of more than 100 people using an MRI (核磁共振成像) scanner. This data was compared with tests on creative ability and a questionnaire on how much their minds usually wandered. Those whose minds wandered the most scored higher in creative ability tests and had more efficient brain systems measured in the MRI machine.
Being efficient at mind-wandering means you can zone out and then naturally switch back in without missing any important point or step. Christine Godwin, the lead author of the latest study from the Georgia Institute of Technology, says that if you are focusing on difficult tasks, your performance will drop if your mind wanders. “But when tasks are easy, people who have high cognitive ability can let their minds wander because it does not affect their performance. You may be thinking about upcoming goals or problem-solving. These are some of the positive sides to mind-wandering.”
Mind-wandering can vary between being more practical or more emotional. What mind-wandering seems to be best at, researchers say, is coming up with new solutions to old problems. So, it's not always a waste of time!

28、 Since her first publication in 1968, Louise Cluck has been no stranger to awards over her long and well-known career. In 1993, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poems, The Wild Iris. And on October 8, she became the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature.
Often said to be an autobiographical(自传体的)poet, drawing from the inner parts of her life, “Gluck is not to be regarded as a self-reflecting poet. she seeks the universal,” Nobel Committee Chair Anders Olsson said in a statement. Gluck, 77, the author of 12 poetry collections, has been able to tum her life experiences into universal themes covering death, loss, and isolation. Because of this, readers have often found her poetry to be “dark”.
However, there is much more than darkness in her voice, as noted by Olsson. “It is straightforward and… also a voice full of humor and insight,” said Olsson. In her poem Snowdrops, Gluck uses the coming of spring after winter to show rebirth of life after death. She leads readers down a depressing path only to reconnect with the light at the near end. At the conclusion of the poem, readers are left to feel the “raw wind of the new world” as they watch a new spring. This is often the case in Gluck’s poetry, being able to feel joy even after not having done so for a long time.
Although she’s already a well-known writer, experienced in exploring trauma(创伤)and healing, Gluck did feel honored to be given the Nobel award. However, when asked what the prize means to her, the lyric poet responded by saying, “It’s too new… I don’t know really what it means. My only hope is to preserve my daily life.”

A.Combining daily life with literature.

【2】The third paragraph is mainly written to_________.
A.display the process of Gluck’s writing
B.interpret what a poem can bring about

D.show how Cluck keeps her own style
【3】What can be inferred about Cluck from the last paragraph?
A.She is self-centered. B.She is well-mannered.
C.She seeks for truth of life. D.She has a low-key attitude.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.A woman’s fight for fame. B.A famous poet’s career.
C.What hard work can do. D.How a poet was shaped.
29、Agatha Christie, the creator of one of the most enduring figures in crime literature-Hercule Poirot, is the best-selling author of all time.
She was born on 15 September, 1890 in Torquay, South West England, into a comfortably well off middle-class family. Although her mother, Clara, an excellent storyteller, did not want her to learn to read too early, she taught herself to read by the age of five. Agatha read the children’s stories of the time, invented imaginary friends and began writing poems when she was very young. At the age of eleven there was a shock. Her father, not well after suffering financial difficulties, died after a series of heart attacks. There were more money worries and talks of selling their house, but Clara and her daughters managed to find a way forward.
By the age of 18 Agatha was amusing herself with writing short stories. But it was during the First World War that Agatha turned to writing detective stories. Her debut detective novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles took some time to finish and even longer to find a publisher. She started writing partly in response to a bet from her sister Madge that she couldn’t write a good detective story and partly to ease the tiredness of working in a Red Cross Hospital in Torquay. Her new knowledge in poisons was also put to good use. The murderer’s use of poison was so well described that when the book was eventually published Agatha received a special honour for a writer of fiction-a review in Pharmaceutical (药学) Journal.
The inspiration for Hercule Poirot came from Agatha’s own life experience. During the First World War there were Belgian refugees (难民) in most parts of the English countryside, Torquay being no exception. Although he was not based on any particular person, Agatha thought that a Belgian refugee, a former great Belgian policeman, would make an excellent detective for The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Hercule Poirot was born.

A.She wanted to prove something to her sister.

31、
Attitudes toward new technologies often fall along generational lines. That is, generally, younger people tend to 【1】 older people on the front end of a technological shift.
It is not always the case, though. When you look at attitudes toward driverless cars, there doesn't seem to be a clear 【2】 divide. The public overall is split on whether they'd like to use a driverless car. In a study last year, of all people surveyed, 48 percent said they wanted to ride in one, while 50 percent did not.
The fact that attitudes toward self-driving cars appear to be so 【3】 across generations suggests how transformative the shift to driverless cars could be. Not everyone wants a driverless car now-and no one can get one vet-but among those who are open to them, every age group is 【4】 engaged.
Actually, this isn't surprising. Whereas older generations are sometimes reluctant to adopt new technologies, driverless cars 【5】 real value to these age groups, especially to those with 【6】 mobility or difficulty driving on their own.
This is especially interesting when you consider that younger people are generally more interested in travel-related 【7】 than older ones.
When it comes to driverless cars, differences in attitude are more 【8】 based on factors not related to age. College graduates, for example, are particularly interested in driverless cars compared with those who have less education:59 percent of college graduates said they would like to use a driverless car compared with 38 percent of those with a high-school diploma or less.
Where a person lives 【9】 too. More people who lived in cities and suburbs said they wanted to try driverless cars than those who lived in rural areas.
While there's reason to believe that interest in self-driving cars is going up across the board, a person's age will have little to do with how self-driving cars can become 【10】. Once driverless cars are actually available for sale, the early adopters will be the people who can afford to buy them.

Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus (马戏团) . Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter (柜台).
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns. elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight (骑士) in shining armor (盔甲).”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right” . The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight child tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned (倾斜) a little closer and asked. “How much do you say?”
The ticket lady again quoted (报价) the price. The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn around and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
注意:续写词数应为80左右。
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground.
