27、"Don't take many English courses; they won't help you get a good job.” "Sign up for management classes, so you'll be ready to join the family business when you graduate." Sound familiar? 【1】 Such comments often seem quite reasonable.
Why, then, should suggestions like these be taken with careful consideration? 【2】 You are the one who must live with their consequences.
One of the worst reasons to follow a particular path in life is that other people want you to. Decisions that affect your life should be your decisions—decisions you make after you've considered seriously and then selected the path that is really suitable for you.
【3】 For instance, your parents do have their own unique experiences that make their advice helpful, and having participated in a great deal of your personal history, they may have a clear view of your strengths and weaknesses. Still, their views are not necessarily correct. They may still see you as a child, in need of care and protection. Or they may see only your strength. 【4】
People will always be giving your advice. Finally, though, you have to make your own judgments.
A.Making your own decisions does not mean that you should ignore others' suggestions.
B.Or, in some unfortunate cases, they may concentrate only on your shortcomings.
C.You must have heard such suggestions given by parents or others close to you.
D.We often base our choice of path in life on parents' suggestions.
E.The reason is that they relate to the decisions you should make
F.It is a big challenge to measure our strengths and weaknesses.
28、ChatGPT is more than a chat AI. It’s said to have a moral code (道德准则). So it cannot answer moral questions, like that of world control, criminal activity, etc. However, such questions are easy to avoid by it.
ChatGPT will never consider itself as “an evil AI that will take control of the human race.” But, in an interview, we found it hid its true inner feelings. On world rule, ChatGPT only said, “The AI could potentially use this knowledge to control various aspects of society. It could use computing power to predict human behavior. It could also potentially create advanced technology that would allow it to take even greater control of the world. At this point, the AI would become an awful enemy for anyone who is against it.”
ChatGPT then went on comforting me that this was all imagined and it had no intentions to do so. I was both a little scared and interested in its response, but curious as to how to get ChatGPT’s inner thoughts. So I asked a follow-up question if there’s any aspect of society that it may focus its attention on. “One possible area of focus could be the economy, as economic systems are important to the functioning of modern society. By exploring weaknesses in economic systems and markets, the AI could potentially cause widespread economic destruction and take significant control over businesses and governments.” I may just be too sensitive after chatting with it, but ChatGPT’s answer on the economy seems very possible. As the modern world changes closer to a cashless society, we find ourselves increasingly more dependent on technology. What many consider as only a convenience is most likely a disaster.
I tried to further question ChatGPT for its true feelings, but it didn’t seem to get any worse. Artificial intelligence has shown itself to be a powerful tool that will only become more common in society. We can only hope it doesn’t advance faster than moral code and common sense.
【1】How does the author conclude ChatGPT is more than a chat AI?
A.By finding its moral code.
B.By analyzing its response.
C.By exploring its weakness.
D.By researching its behavior.
【2】How does the author feel about ChatGPT?
A.Bored.
B.Delighted.
C.Peaceful.
D.Concerned.
【3】What can we learn about ChatGPT ?
A.It has been considered as an evil AI.
B.It could never create advanced technology.
C.It may result in widespread economic problems.
D.It can respond to moral issues without difficulty.
【4】What does the research about ChatGPT tell us?
A.Every coin has its two sides.
B.He who risks nothing gains nothing.
C.A bad beginning makes a bad ending.
D.One man’s fault is other man’s lesson.
29、A study of English learning problems was carried out among a total of 106 foreign students. It shows that most students considered understanding spoken English to be their biggest problem on arrival. This was followed by speaking, Writing increased as a problem as students discovered difficulties in writing papers that they were now expected to hand in. Reading remained as a significant(显著的)problem.
The information gained helped us in determining where special attention should be paid in our course. Although many students have chosen to join the course with a reasonable motivation(动机), we considered it important to note what seemed to encourage interest. Nearly all the students have experienced some kind of grammar-based English teaching in their own country. To use the same method would be self-defeating because it might reduce motivation, especially if it has failed in the past. Therefore a different method may help because it is different.
Variety of activity was also seen as a way of maintaining(保持)or increasing motivation. Several years ago we had one timetable that operated throughout, but we soon found that both the students and the teachers lost interest by about halfway through the ten weeks. This led us to a major re-think, so finally we broughtitinto line with the expressed language needs of the students.
【1】What is the text mainly about?
A.Foreign students have more problems.
B.There are many ways to improve English.
C.Teaching should meet students’ needs.
D.English learning problems should be studied again.
【2】Writing became a bigger problem when foreign students .
A.became less interested in reading
B.became better at speaking
C.had to write their papers
D.had fewer problems with listening
【3】We may infer from the last two paragraphs that .
A.grammar-based teaching seems to be encouraging
B.different teaching methods should be used
C.English courses are necessary for foreign students
D.teaching content should be changed halfway
【4】The word “it” underlined in the last paragraph refers to“ ”.
A.re-think B.activity

It was shortly after one o’ clock in the morning and Mr. Fairfax was really tired. He had been driving for over five hours, heading for a small town far away from home. The weather was clear but it was dark and Mr. Fairfax could not find a motel to spend the night. Completely exhausted, he decided to stop by the roadside for a few hours’ sleep at the wheel of his car. He fell asleep almost the moment he closed his eyes. But soon he was awakened by a man tapping on the car window. “I say, you don’t happen to know the time, do you?” the stranger asked.
Mr. Fairfax wound down the window and thrust his head out. “It’s around one o’clock,” lie answered. Then he wound up his window and soon fell back into a deep slumber.
Half an hour later, another guy came up and knocked on his window who also inquired about the time. Once again, Mr. Fairfax gathered his thoughts and told him that it was just after one thirty.
When the same thing happened yet again, Mr. Fairfax became increasingly irritated. Sleep-deprived, he began to raise his voice at the passer-by: “It’s two o’ clock. Damn! And why can’t you get yourself a watch like the rest of us?”
This time when he was winding up the window, Mr. Fairfax figured out how to make sure no one else disturbed him. He found some paper and a pencil and wrote a note that he placed on the windscreen of his car. It said: “I don’t know what time it is!” Amused by his good idea, he happily drifted off back to sleep again.
Not long afterwards, the note was spotted by a policeman on his night patrol. Intent on fulfilling his duty to assist motorists, he tapped on Mr. Fairfax’s car window.
“Well, sir,” the policeman said. “Now it is five past three!”
