24、   Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home. The land was wet and forested, and made a home for the birds, other animals and many different plants.

It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature. He had seen some red-tailed hawks, red foxes, wood turtles and other animals. He also found special native flowers.

Suddenly it was announced that the “empty” land would be improved by a lot of houses on it. The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die. Then the wet soil would be covered with extra grounds.

When he heard about the news, he was not happy. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted.

Andrew wrote down clearly all the research he had done about the area, and the houses would affect the local environment. He sent letters to members of local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose the building of the houses

Although he was only 12 years old, he had the courage and wisdom of a person much older. Andrew’s teachers described him as gentle, shy and active. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door, to ask the people to sign, who did not want the houses to be built. In only one month, he got the signatures of 250 people.

26、Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usual problem is how to get rid of it. But the designers of the University of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem — how to collect body heat, and the heat given off by electrical equipment such as electric lights and refrigerators as well. The system works so well that no fuel (燃料) is needed to make the university’s six buildings warm and comfortable.

Some parts of most modern buildings, theatres and office as well as classrooms — are heated by people and lights far more than necessary, and sometimes they must be air-conditioned (用空调的) even in winter. The skill of saving heat and sharing it out again in a different way is called “heat recovery”. Few modern buildings recover heat, but the university’s system is the first to recover heat from some buildings and reuse it in others.

Along the way, Pittsburgh University has learned a great deal about some of its heat producer. The harder a student studies, the more heat his body gives off. Boy students send out more heat than girl students. And the larger a student is, the more heat he produced. It sounds rather reasonable to draw the following conclusion (总结) that the hottest hope for the Pittsburgh University would be a hardworking, overweight boy student who is very clever in the university.

【4】In the last sentence, the “hottest hope” refers to ________.

A.the person who produces the most heat

B.the person who suffers most from heat

C.the person who takes in the most heat

D.the person who wants the most heat

【5】The best title for this passage is ________.
