1、“Lifelong learning” is a popular idea all around the world, but what does it mean?

Many people believe we can learn everything we need to be successful in life at school. ______ it is not true. In modern society, everything changes very fast. Lifelong leaning means learning new skills and knowledge through our ______ lives, not just when we are young.

Lifelong leaning can also mean leaning something to make our lives happier or easier. In one American city neighborhood, all the women went to a self-defense(自我防护) class so they could fight back if a thief attacked them! All these are different examples of lifelong learning.

Lifelong learning has helped people like Peter J. Daniels, an Australian businessman. Peter grew up poor and when he was a child he experienced learning difficulties. A teacher once told him, “Peter, you will never become anything in life.” After leaving school, Peter became a builder, but he still wanted to _____ and learn how to read. He bought a dictionary and slowly taught himself how to pronounce words and form sentences. Later, Peter started to read books from cover to cover. He read 6,000 books on politics, religion, business and history in two years. All this knowledge helped Peter start a business career. 四、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

24、   Posted on 25 March by Selina

I used to shower with soap every daybut my skin(皮肤)always felt dry and itchy(发痒的). Then two months ago, I heard of the no-soap movement. Since then, I’ve given up using soap in the shower. I still shower every day. I just don't use soap because it's filled with chemicals.

So, what's so bad about using soap? Well, the chemicals in soaps can be harmful to our health. So, if we use soap, our skin will take in the chemicals, which will then end up in our bodies. According to the scientists, some of the chemicals used in a soap are quite dangerous. During my research, I also learnt that soap removes moisture(水分)from the body. This is actually why my skin was so dry and itchy.

Getting used to washing my body without soap was a huge change. For the first week, I felt a bit dirty and I didn't smell great, either. However, during the second week, my skin felt clean without strange smell. Best of all, my skin problems disappeared, and now I have softer and healthier skin.

On the whole, going soap-free has not only saved me time and money, but has also improved my skin. What's more, this experience has made me take a look at some of the other products I use in the shower, such as shampoo. More about that in my next blog!

1What do people do when they join the no-soap movement?

A.Have a shower only a week. B.Never use soap when having a shower.

C.Throw away all the soap they have. D.Make soap on their own instead of buying it.

2Why does Selina’s skin always feel dry and itchy according to the reading?

A.Because she takes showers too often. B.Because she often showers at a high heat.

C.Because the soap she uses smells terrible D.Because soap takes away her moisture.

3What happened to Selina during the second week?

A.She smelt bad but felt clean. B.She felt dirty but smelt great.

C.She smelt normal and felt clean. D.She felt dry and smelt strange.

4What might Selina write in her next blog?

A.When and how the shampoo was invented. B.Where and when her shampoo was brought.

C.How she enjoys the shower with shampoo. D.What she thinks of shampoo in the shower.

25、A hunter (猎人) once lost his way deep inside the forest. As hard as he tried, he could not find a way out of the forest, nor could he find any food to eat. He started feeling so hungry that he could eat an elephant in one go. Disappointed, he lost all hope. And that was exactly when an apple tree caught his sight. He collected some apples to feed him for the rest of his search.

As he ate the first apple, he felt thankful for finding the tree. He thanked the forest. He could not believe his luck when he ate the first apple, but he was less thankful while eating the second apple and even less thankful after eating the fifth apple. Somehow, with each passing apple, his hunger refused to go away and he became unhappier. He couldn’t enjoy his tenth apple at all.

Why? He had already taken for granted (恩赐的) the gift of having found an apple tree in the middle of a forest. When he took the tenth apple in his hand, he was still very hungry, but he just did not feel like eating any more. Economics (经济学) calls this diminishing marginal utility (边际效用递减), like to call it diminishing gratitude (感恩), or in simpler words, taking things for granted. Or let’s just call it the tenth apple effect.

The tenth apple did not lack (缺少) flavor (味道), nor was it unable to end the man’s hunger. The only thing lacking was his gratitude for finding food in the middle of the forest.

D.The more things you find, the less useful they are.

【4】What did the writer say about the tenth apple?

A.It was unable to end the man’s hunger.

B.The man didn’t want to throw it away.

C.It was not as delicious as the other apples.

【5】What may the writer wish readers to do in the daily life?

27、   Instead of gobbling(狼吞虎咽) your food, try eating more slowly. It may help you drop those unwanted pounds. The conclusion is from a new study by Chinese researcher.

The study showed that compared with people who gobbled their food, those who ate at a normal speed were 29 percent less likely to be obese(肥胖的). But those who ate slowly were up to 42 percent less likely to obese. In addition, people who ate slowly tended (往往会) to be healthier and have a healthier lifestyle than those who ate quickly or at a normal speed. “However, this study could not prove that speed eating causes or stops obesity,” the researcher noted.

"Slow eating has its advantages and a few disadvantages ,” said Samantha Heller from New York City. “on the one hand , slow eating gives our body time to register a sense of satisfaction and fullness, so we eat less. We are more likely to enjoy a taste of food. On the other hand, the longer people sit in front of food, the more food they will eat, she said.

“Speed eating appears to be far more harmful. People who eat quickly, as many of us do, gobble far more food than they need. In many European countries, slow eating is a way of life,” Heller said. In America, speed eating takes the lead. Thus we need to encourage people to have a change, learn the way of slower eating from Europeans and get a true enjoyment of food.

阅读下列短文,根据短文信息完成文后表格,每空一词。

Making a public speech is the thing that most people don’t want to do. The reason is that we are all afraid of making mistakes in front of others. The more important the speech is the more frightened we will be. But forget it now. Public speaking is easy. It’s just a simple talking Although I’m a shy man I’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned

Keep your speech simple. Your audience can’t take all of your main ideas and they can only remember one or two of them not ten or twenty. So you should prepare one or two of your main ideas very well. But if you can’t express what you want to say then your speech will not be paid attention to. And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say your audience won’t either.

Organize your speech well. No matter how long or short your speech is you have to organize your speech—how you are going to open or begin what main points you want to make and how you’re going to close or end. A strong close is usually very important and critical(关键的) the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. If not they will be confused.

Keep your speech not long. The standard length of a speech is usually 12 minutes. Most people can’t put their minds in one thing for too long time which will make them tired and lose their interest. If you pay no attention to your audience’s reaction(反应),the audience will get bored. Of course your speech will fail.

Following these suggestions above you can make a good speech in public and you will be an excellent speaker I think.
