四、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

24、

Dorothy and her friends were nervous to get out of the forest as soon as they could, so they hurried along the yellow brick road. It was not long before they came to a wider river.

“What can we do now?” Dorothy cried. “There isn’t a tree tall enough to fall across this river.”

“There’s no problem,” the Scarecrow said. “The Tin Woodman will build a raft (木筏).”

And this is what the Tin Woodman did. And while he was busy making the raft, Dorothy found some wild fruit and nuts, which she ate hungrily. Then, because it was taking the Tin Woodman a long time to finish the raft, Dorothy lay down and went to sleep.

The night passed without any problems, and the next morning the small raft was ready. Dorothy sat in the middle with Toto. The lion stood at one end and nearly made the boat sink (沉没) because he was so big and heavy. The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman stood at the other end. They both had long poles (杆子) that they used to push the raft through the water.

At first all went well, but then the river became deep, but the poles couldn’t not touch the bottom. The Tin Woodman said, “If we cannot stay near the land and the yellow brick road, the Wicked Witch of the West will use her magic and hurt us.”

“And then we won’t meet the Wizard, and I won’t get any wisdom,” the Scarecrow said.

“And I won’t get a heart,” the Tin Woodman said.

“And I won’t get any courage,” the Lion said.

“And I’ll never get home to Kansas,” Dorothy said. “We must do something.”

The Scarecrow was able to push the raft to the river bank. Dorothy, Toto, the Lion and the Tin Woodman got off. Before the Scarecrow could get off, however, the boat moved away from the river bank and carried the Scarecrow down the river.

Dorothy said, “Perhaps we’ll meet the raft further down the river. The most important thing now is to get back to the yellow brick road and continue on our way to the City of Emeralds.”

The Lion and the Tin Woodman agreed, and they set off along the river bank. It was not long before they saw the Scarecrow. He was holding onto the pole in the middle of the river. There was no sign of the raft.

【1】What probably happened to Dorothy and her friends before this passage?

26、When I became a junior, I decided to take Latin (拉丁文) at school. I was so excited and really expected to learn it well.

However, the Latin class turned out to be quite boring. Each day, Mr Keady, the teacher, would ask us to open our books and read aloud the Latin forms of words. This was the way he taught us every day. That was until one afternoon when, once again, we were asked to open our books, and I decided to speak up.

When Mr Keady asked what was wrong, I explained why I found his class boring, how I had expected more, and that his teaching method seemed old-fashioned. When I finished speaking, I expected Mr Keady to angrily send me to the head teacher.

To my surprise, he sat at his desk quietly, looking disappointed and tired. After a moment of silence, Mr Keady spoke. He quietly said that he would think carefully about what I had said. And that was it.

In the following weeks, the Latin class didn’t become the exciting learning environment I had hoped for, but Mr Keady did try harder to interest us in his classes.

Maybe some people would praise what I did, but even so many years later, I feel bad about it. If I saw him now, I would tell him how much I regretted what I’d done that day in class. I would also tell him that he taught me a wonderful lesson that day. Following my unkind words, Mr Keady showed me that being wounded doesn’t mean you have to give away your dignity (尊严), and that no one can take it away from you.

六、完型填空(共1题,共 5分)

29、You are standing with your classmates. Everyone is talking except you. Perhaps you’re afraid they will laugh at you when you speak. Maybe you just aren’t _________ enough to speak.

Shyness is like a snake that crawls into our mouth and stops us _________. But we shouldn’t let it stay there.

I am 29 years old. Even today, that snake still sometimes visits me. When I was in high school, I was so shy that I wouldn’t talk to anyone except my parents and best friends. If a _________ asked me the way to a local shop, it was as if I’d forgot how to talk. One summer, I got a job in a _________ and that helped a lot. It meant I had to talk to customers. I had to tell them how much their meal cost. I had to ask them _________ they want to drink Coke or Sprite. This job taught me how to speak with people.

You may be too young to find a part-time job. But you can look for other chances to speak with people. You can offer to help an old woman carry her heavy bag. Or you can go to get a newspaper for your family.
