21、 The British people have just discovered a new country. It’s called the UK! More and more people are choosing to take their holidays in their own country rather than travel abroad.
In the late 1970s, air travel became affordable for the average family in the UK, and more and more British people started travelling abroad for their summer holidays (July-August). After all, the British weather isn’t very good, even in summer, so a lot of Britons leave the UK for a vacation. Particularly popular with families on a budget is the “package holiday”, where the cost of flights and accommodation are offered as one discounted price by travel agents.
In the 1980s and 1990s, young people in the UK became more wealthy. As a result, the Club 18-30 holiday became popular. Young people started to go abroad in groups, to places such as Spain and Greece. Once at their destination, they socialised with other groups of young people and had one long party.
British holidaying habits have begun to change, however. Climate change means that the UK now has a warmer climate than before, so people don’t always feel they need to go overseas to find good weather. Also, the world seems a less certain place as interconnected economies rise and fall, which means that the cost of foreign holidays is less predictable than it used to be. As a result, more and more Britons are choosing to spend their summer holidays in the UK.
In recent years, British hotels in areas such as the English Lake District have seen a large increase in bookings. That rise is mainly owing to the British staying in their own country for their holidays. In addition, for some foreign tourists, the UK is a cheaper place to visit than previously because of changes in the value of the British pound.
The UK has always been famous for its international explorers, but now it is starting to discover itself.

22、 For many, finding an unattended wallet filled with 400 in cash would be a source of temptation (诱惑). But the urge would no doubt be greater if you were living on the streets with little food and money. All of this makes the actions of the homeless Tom Smith even more remarkable.
After spotting a wallet on the front seat inside a parked car with its window down, he stood guard in the rain for about two hours waiting for the owner to return.
After hours in the cold and wet, he reached inside and pulled the wallet out hoping to find some ID so he could contact the driver, only to discover it contained 400 in notes, with another 50 in spare change beside it.
He then took the wallet to a nearby police station. When the car’s owner John Anderson and his colleague Carol Lawrence returned to the ear, they were shocked to find two policemen standing next to it. The policemen told them what Mr. Smith did and that the wallet was safe.
The pair were later able to thank Mr. Smith for his kindness.
Mr. Anderson said: “I couldn’t believe that the guy never took a penny. To think he is sleeping on the streets tonight when he could have stolen the money and paid for a place to stay in. This guy has nothing and yet he didn’t take the wallet for himself; he thought about others instead. It’s unbelievable. It just proves there are honest guys out there.”
Mr. Smith’s act drew much of the public’s attention and won praise from social media users after Mr. Anderson posted the story on Facebook.

But by chance, I changed my mind.
A handful of small pomegranate trees grow just outside the gate of my husband’s family home in rural Zhejiang. 【2】 So one autumn, my mother-in-law gave me and my husband a bag filled with pomegranates she had picked herself.
At first, I rejected the seemingly burdensome pile of fruit on our dinner table. 【3】 He continued to bite on pomegranate and offer me a taste of the seeds, and eventually curiosity won. I popped a handful in my mouth, and found myself knocked in the best possible way.
The seeds were filled with that familiar rich and sweet flavor. 【4】 Moreover, it was superior to anything I had encountered in liquid form. Later, I’m always fascinated to discover the many locales in China also touched by the sweet pleasures of the pomegranate.
【5】 At that time in my life, moving around left me too much stress, which usually left me with the discomfort of a nervous stomach.
