二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   The story is little known, but the anthologist Allie Esiri stumbled across it while researching her new book.“It's extraordinary that it may have been Shakespeare's words that jolted he guard's humanity," she said.

After the Holocaust(大屠杀) Eva was reunited with her boyfriend, Jan. They married, moved to the US and both taught chemistry at Illinois University, Yet none of that might have happened had she not been cast in A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1944. Eva never got to appear in the show as she was driven to the Theresienstadt ghetto Czechoslovakia, where 33,000 died. But it was there that she met the love of her life.

Now 95, Jan still remembers falling in love with the girl he saw helping elderly people with their luggage as they arrived. He read poetry with her and Eva would recite the lines she never got to perform. “Shakespeare was a very important part of her life. I loved hearing her recite it,”he said.

Months later Eva was saying those lines again in the Polish winter. By then, she had lost her father at Auschwitz. She and her mother were assessed by Dr. Josef Mengele and had been sent to the Kurzbach labor camp. It was there that a guard she knew as Suchy heard her lines as Titania.“He seemed to be listening to my recitations,” Eva wrote in her memoir.

The mere act of him talking to her was forbidden but Eva also noted that he spoke to her with the polite form of“you” in German. Mr. Rocek said that Suchy had no ulterior motive.“He never tried in the slightest to touch her or anything,” he said. The guard kept a watchful eye over Eva and her mother, particularly when the inmates were marched toward the Gross-Rosen concentration camp. Knowing this was a path to death, Suchy approached Eva's mother Anna early one morning and told them to escape. Eva, Anna and three others fled into the woods.

Esiri, who includes the story in her book Shakespeare for Every Day of the Year, says:“You wouldn't think those conversations in concentration camps had any human moments.”Michael Dobson, professor of Shakespeare studies at Birmingham University, said: “It's what culture's for. To provide channels of communication between people even in the hardest circumstances.”Eva and Jan were married from 1947 until her death in 2015, aged 87. He said:“We saw A Midsummer Night's Dream whenever we had a chance.”

22、   More than 5, 000 species of birds manage annual round-trip migrations(迁徙). These journeys can be thousands of miles, with many birds often returning to the exact same nesting and wintering place from year to year.

Migration is very important in the life cycle of birds, and without this annual journey many birds would not be able to raise their young. Birds migrate to find the richest and most abundant food that will provide adequate energy to raise young birds. If no birds migrated, competition for adequate food during breeding(繁殖)seasons would be fierce and many birds would starve.

Of course, not all birds migrate. Some birds can take advantage of different food sources(来源)as seasons change, allowing them to stay in one place all year round. Other birds are better adapted to cold climates with thicker fat reserves and better feathers, and they can survive long cold seasons while they forage for winter food. For more than half the world's birds, however, migration is necessary to stay alive.

When the timing is right for their migrating needs, birds will begin their journey. Food, weather, temperature and illness or injury are several minor aspects that may affect migration by a day or two, but most bird species follow precise migration "schedule". While migration is at its finest during spring and fall, birds migrate all throughout the year. Migration is actually an ongoing process and there are always birds at some stage of their journeys. The distance the birds must fly, the length of time it takes to mate and the amount of young birds all affect when any one species is migrating.

Migratory birds have several changes before the journey. Among them is hyperphagia, the process of migration-related weight gain. As daylight changes and migration times near, a bird's hormone levels will change and they will build a greater fat supply. Besides, old, ragged feathers create more wind drag and air resistance, which requires a bird to use more energy in flight, so many birds replace old feathers with new ones.

1Without migration, many birds would   .

A.stop reproducing during breeding seasons

B.abandon young birds for lack of food

C.be unable to find places for nesting

D.be in danger of starvation

2What does the underlined phrase "forage for" mean in Paragraph 3?

A.Run out of. B.Cut down on.

C.Search for. D.Wait for.

3What can we learn about birds' migration?

A.Most birds begin their journey at the arrival of spring.

B.Warm temperature usually advances it by a day or two.

C.There is almost little migration of birds in winter.

D.Birds' migration is affected by various aspects.

4How will migratory birds benefit from the process of hyperphagia?

A.They will tend to use less energy in flight.

B.They will store enough energy for travelling.

C.They will replace old feathers with new ones.

D.They will better sense the changes of daylight.

23、   After university in 2011, Samuel went to a rural primary school for native children, where, on his first day, another teacher told him, "Samuel, you don't have to do much, they're just Orang Asli-native children." This was what Samuel would spend years fighting against.

The Orang Asli community has struggled with poverty, melting into society, and losing their own identity and culture due to others' disregard of it. Samuel saw that the main barrier in teaching these children was the attitude on the part of many teachers that the native children were not worth their efforts. It was thought that whatever was taught would make no difference, so nobody bothered to try. The children themselves ended up believing these stigmas (污名), often doubting what they can achieve. Teachers skipped or slept in classes, and little effort was made to create an appropriate learning environment. Consequently, the school was one of the worst-performing in the district.

Samuel bonded with his native students and accepted their culture, leading him to see their potential. However, he also came to see that they did not have equal opportunities compared to urban schools, due to the lack of facilities. So he set up a crowdfunding project to create a fully equipped 21st-century English classroom with tablets and computers. The Orang Asli children now learn technology, experience English and communicate in English with volunteers all over Malaysia and overseas.

Consequently, the students have improved in national standardized examinations, from a pass rate of 30% in English (2008-2012) to an average of 80% (2013-2017). These efforts have resulted in a shift of what local children are considered capable of academically.

1What did the teacher's words suggest about the native children?

A.They were intelligent. B.They were hopeless.

C.They were unfriendly. D.They were independent.

2What major problem did Samuel need to solve?

A.The poverty of local people. B.The lack of facilities in his school.

C.The prejudice against the native kids. D.The unsuitable teaching methods.

3What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The change of native students.

B.The importance of learning English.

C.The improvement of native education.

D.Samuel's work for the native kids.

4What can we learn from Samuel's story?

A.Respect makes a big difference.

B.The academic performance comes first.

C.Everyone deserves access to education.

D.One method can't apply to each situation.

26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Every night as the whole family fell asleep, Catalina would slide from home to the Cerro Tololo observatory (天文台). Papa was the mechanic (修理工)of the observatory, but during the day Papa would not allow her to get closer to the telescopes there. Only at night, Catalina was allowed in with the permission of the night staff.

Catalina loved helping to service the grand telescopes, the eyes that looked out into the universe. She wanted badly to be an astronomer someday. Adults never took her dream seriously. Even her father laughed, “Maybe you’ll be hired to clean the offices. ”

One day in library, Catalina was reading a plant journal when she stopped at the picture of an unusual white flower. “It’s called wild carrot. “ A Spanish astronomer, who she saw several times in the observatory, stood behind her. “Pretty, isn’t it? I’ve always liked that flower, because it looks like a galaxy. ”

“A spiral galaxy (漩涡星系), ”she whispered. Blond eyebrows climbed the scientist's forehead. “Indeed. And what is your name, young lady?” he asked.

”I’m Catalina Solis. ”

“Eduardo Solis’s daughter? The mechanic?”

Yes. ”She

gave a look at him. “I want to be an astronomer when I grow up. "

He laughed kindly, no longer meeting her eyes, and patted her on the shoulder. “Yes, of course, my dear. Work hard in school, and it could happen. ”

One evening, Catalina eyescanned the top of the observatory as usual. Suddenly she noticed the angle of the one-meter telescope was unusual. The telescope was pointed down, lower than she had ever seen it. Catalina learned from1 Papa how dangerous it would be. If left like it was, the telescope would move past its limit and be damaged. So without hesitation she got inside the observatory.
