21、Many of us have reached in our pockets, feeling a vibration (振动), wrongly believing our mobile phones have just rung. The phenomenon even has a name: 'phantom vibration syndrome' -and found it is surprisingly common.
Now scientists believe that we are so alert(警觉) for phone calls and messages we are misinterpreting slight muscle spasms (痉挛) as proof of a call. Robert Rosenberger, an assistant professor at the Georgia Tech Institute of Technology has studied the delusional calls. He said sufferers describe a vague tingling feeling which they think is their mobile phone indicating it has received a text message or call while on ‘silent’. But when the device is retrieved, there was no one on the other end.
Dr. Rosenberger said "I find so many people say, ‘This happens to me, but I thought I was the only one. I thought I was odd. "It seems that the syndrome particularly affects people at the beck and call of mobile phones or pagers. A 2010 study by Michael Rothberg and colleagues found that nearly 70 per cent of doctors at a hospital in Massachusetts suffered phantom vibrations. A more recent study of US college students found the figure was as high as 90 per cent.
While the odd feeling is widespread, it does not seem to be considered a grave problem. Dr. Rosenberger said: "it's not actually a syndrome in a technical sense. That's just the name that's got stuck to it." He added: "Only 2 per cent of people consider it a problem.”
While widespread, the scientific community has not yet invested much effort in getting to the bottom of why we suffer phantom calls.
Dr. Rosenberger said: "People are guessing it has something to do with nervous energy. The cognitive (认知的) scientists are talking about brain chemistry, cognitive pathways changing. But it's not like they have brain scans to go on." He said: "We have a phone call in our pocket all the time and it becomes sort of an extension of ourselves. We have this sort of readiness to experience a call. We feel something and we think, OK, that could be a call.”

22、What I learned watching dentist at work
I would like to be a dentist in the future. 【1】 The patient, tender dentist comforted me, a 7-year-old girl at the time, and persuaded me to stop crying and to accept my treatment.
【2】 Recently, our teacher gave us the homework of experiencing a kind of job on the weekend. I chose without hesitation to live a day as a dentist at my friend’s older brother’s workplace.
I got to Dr Tan’s clinic at 7:45 am, 15 minutes before office hours began on Saturday. Dr Tan, who has been a dentist for five years, sat in his consulting room with a mask on his face and waited for his patients. I didn’t really understand his diagnoses or treatments, but I could see that Dr Tan was a responsible doctor. He explained conditions and therapies (治疗方案) to patients at length to remove their doubts. He paused operations to let patients rest if the treatment was taking too much time. 【3】 Dr Tan worked for almost the whole morning without a break. He only made a phone call to his wife to remind her to have an antenatal (产前) examination. Yes, he will be a father in five months, but he still cannot keep his wife company at the weekend. 【4】 They try to ease others’ pain anytime and anywhere, despite the cost to their own time and life.

23、 It might seem strange to be making predictions about 2021, but one thing is clear: technology has been affected just as much as every other part of our lives. Another clear thing is that today’s most important technology trends will play a big part in helping us deal with and adapt to the many challenges facing us. From the shift to working from home to new rules about how we meet and interact in public spaces, technology trends will be the driving force in managing the change.
One of the major technology trends that are likely to play out this year is 5G and enhanced connectivity. Each successive advance in mobile connectivity from 3G onwards has unlocked new use cases for the Internet. 3G made web browsing and data-driven services useful on mobile devices, 4G led to the growth of streaming video and music platforms as bandwidths (宽带) increased, and 5G, similarly, will open more doors in terms of what is possible.
5G means that services relying on advanced technologies such as augmented (增强的) reality and virtual reality, as well as cloud-based gaming platforms like Google’s Stadia, become a practical thing, anywhere at any time. They also threaten to make cable and fiber-based (光纤) networks redundant, with their need for us to be tied to a particular location.
In short, 5G and other advanced, high-speed networks make other new technologies available anywhere, any time. A great example is Norwegian fishery operator Salmar that uses a 5G network to automate the care and feeding of its fish. Image recognition algorithms (算法) are used to detect which fish are over or under-feeding, and automatically distribute food and medicine needed to keep them healthy. Initiatives like this will become increasingly important during 2021, where businesses look to increase automation across their workforces.
【1】Which of the following is highly influenced by 5G technology?
A.Data-driven services.
B.Streaming video.
C.Music platforms.
D.Google’s Stadia.
【2】Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “redundant” in paragraph 3?
A.Useful.
B.Unnecessary.
C.Expensive.
D.Special.
【3】Why is “Salmar” mentioned in the text?
A.To show the development of Norwegian fishery.
B.To explain how to keep fish healthy.
C.To present the application of 5G technology.
D.To propose new initiatives for businesses.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Different predictions of technology trends.
B.Successive advances in mobile technology.
C.One of the technological highlights of the year.
D.The driving force in managing changes.
24、How can we keep up with the pace of change today? For Bradley Staats, the answer is easy: we all need to keep learning.
“I came to appreciate that it was the story of learning. That’s what dragged me back to learn. I’d been in investment banking, I thought I had the knowledge to do what needed to be done, but really struggled over time,” he recalls. “Why do we get in our own way?”
Now Professor at the University of North Carolina, Staats has published his conclusions in a new book, “Never Stop Learning”. In it, he thinks highly of the virtues of being a “dynamic(积极的) learner”.
Become a Learning Dynamo
“Think of them as the four Fs,” he says. “That you’re focused, you’re fast, you’re frequent and you’re flexible.” Collectively, these four elements make it easier for us to learn new skills and ways of working.
The Importance of Failure
Staats presents some basic elements to achieving this ideal. The first of these involves another F: failure. “If you talk to people about how important failure is to learning, you’ll get the head nodding. But we tend to have a fear of failure, so bad overpowers good.”
Learning to Ask Questions
“When we ask a question, it shows that we don’t know something, and that people will actually think less of us. What’s interesting is that the research suggests it’s just the opposite. It lets them be an expert and share their perspective with us,” he points out.
Learning a Falsification Mindset
Staats advises us “to have strong opinions, weakly held”, which helps to have what he calls “a falsification mindset”. “A good scientist usually has a hypothesis(假设) first and then tries to falsify it,” he says. For example, you want to set up your operation in India. So you not only want to think about why that’s a good idea, but spend a lot of time asking questions why that might be a bad idea. Why might I be wrong?
【1】How was Bradley Staats in investment banking?
A.Quite relaxed.
B.Rather hard.
C.Fairly, pleased.
D.Rarely hopeful.
【2】What effect would “the four Fs” have on us?
A.Disturbing.
B.Challenging.
C.Inspiring.
D.Critical.
【3】In which aspect do we benefit from learning to ask questions?
A.Building our confidence.
B.Showing our wisdom.
C.Gaining our experience.
D.Promoting our understanding.
【4】What makes “a falsification mindset” received by scientists?
A.That they can benefit from the reflective practice.
B.That a failure rate is easy to measure.
C.That they can eventually conclude a truth.
D.That active mindsets surely mean great success.
