21、   On July 24, 2020, Mike Stout launched his kayak(皮筏艇)just before 8:30 a.m. About 56 miles and 16.5 hours later, he landed on the sandy Michigan shore. It was his second time crossing Lake Michigan.

By chance, Stout said, he gave kayaking a try in 2016. Already in good physical condition, he considered kayaking a weekend escape. Then he was challenged by a client of his firm to think bigger. He did go big quickly. Weekend kayak trips were 40, 50 and 60 miles long over the next few months. Then his goal was to cross Lake Michigan that year. On August 3, Stout completed his first crossing of Lake Michigan in 15.5 hours. Since then, he’s finished countless long-distance trips on Minnesota rivers and lakes.

In heading back to Lake Michigan last summer, Stout thought he could become the first kayaker to make a round-trip crossing of the Great Lake. He felt capable. He’d put in 800 miles since March 1, 2020-when ice was still on the Minnesota River.

Stout wanted to do with manageable winds. Possibilities rose, only to become worse, the lake showing its mercurial nature. Stout realized a single crossing was his best hope. With local police informed of his plans and plenty of food aboard, Stout launched. His plan was to land on the Michigan shore 12.5 hours later. The lake thought otherwise. The winds and waves were working against him, too. Still, he was resolute. Finally he could hear waves crashing on shore.

“Never did I have a sense of doubt or fear or worry,” Stout said. Despite the constant, forceful wind, he said the crossing was easier than his others because of his experience. But no less meaningful. The stars, the chance to speak to the heavens, and the hope that his adventure would inspire others-all were fuel to finish.

【1】What can we infer about Stout from paragraph 2?

A.He challenged his client.

B.He intended to escape real life.

C.He was organized and determined.

D.He set a goal bigger than his capability.

C.The freezing water.

D.Warning from local police.

【3】What does the underlined word “mercurial” in paragraph 4 mean?

22、A  I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The advertisement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and 4:00.Since I work from 9:00 to 5:30, the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute lunch break.

Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes.Last Monday.I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes waiting for the bus, By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip.

By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi, it was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but felt like an hour to me.When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.

23、It’s 2076 and the skies are looking decidedly milky. On windy plains and in parts of the seas that have been turned over to wind farms, a different kind of tower has been built alongside the turbines (涡轮). They take in CO2 out of the atmosphere. Vast parcels of land have been given over to forest. Trees are grown, harvested and burned for energy in power plants that don’t let CO2 escape to the atmosphere. Instead, emissions are captured and driven underground. Powdered minerals are put into the water to absorb CO2 and reduce ocean acidification.

All these technologies are a desperate action to reverse more than two centuries of greenhouse gas emissions. But they are not entirely up to the task and, anyway, we are still releasing greenhouse gases. “I think it’s very likely that in 60 years we’ll be using both technologies,” says John Shepherd of the University of Southampton, UK. He is referring to the two flavors of geoengineering: absorbing CO2 out of the air and using a sunshade to reflect some of the sun’s rays back out into space.

There is no denying that climate talks are going too slowly and not so smoothly. Even if industrial emissions were to drop rapidly — a big if — some sections pose an intractable problem. We have no real replacement for aeroplane fuel and feeding people demands intensive agriculture, which accounts for a quarter of global emissions.

Computer models suggest there will be winners and losers. While a sunshade could lower global average temperatures to pre-industrial levels, there would be regional differences. Northern Europe, Canada, Siberia and the poles would remain warmer than they were, and temperatures over the oceans would be cooler. Global warming is predicted to make wet regions wetter and dry ones drier. Models suggest a sunshade would correct this, but, again, not in a uniform way.

Shepherd fears all this will feed into international arguments. He imagines some kind of global council where governments seek a climate that meets their needs. Some might prefer a slightly warmer temperature, for tourism or agriculture. But nations whose coral reefs (珊瑚礁) draw in visitors will probably want more CO2 absorbing technologies.

In spite of all these concerns, most scientists hold that revolutionary technology and people’s awakening can shine a light on solutions in ways that are impossible now. There is undoubtedly a long way to go when we address problems facing mankind, but we can always anticipate something.

【1】What is described in the first paragraph?

A.Future scenery and farming methods.

B.The development of transport technology.

【3】It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A.climate talks haven’t achieved the expected results

B.industrial emissions will decrease greatly in 60 years

C.technologies to reduce CO2 emission aren’t used properly for now

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Effective CO2 absorbing technologies have come into wide use.

B.With greenhouse gas reduced, global warming can be addressed.

C.Future climate will improve with human efforts but threats still remain.

D.Future climate will restore to a normal state with advanced technology.

24、   From birds to bees and wolves to frogs, animals use numbers to hunt, find a mate, return to their home, and more—and researchers believe that this ability to process and represent numbers, known as numerical (数字的) competence, influences an animal’s chance of survival.

In a review published in the journal Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Andreas Nieder, a neurobiologist at the University of Tuebingen, Germany, suggests the capability to differentiate numbers has to have a strong survival benefit and reproduction (繁殖) benefit.

Honeybees, for instance, can remember the number of landmarks they pass when searching for food in order to find their way back to the hive (蜂房). Also, for example, male frogs sing “advertisement” calls to attract females. The females, listening for the complexity of their calls, choose the male that sings the most calls.

This can also be seen in animals choosing a larger amount of food over a small amount or in animals forming hunting groups. Wolves are more likely to hunt successfully if they have the right number of wolves in their pack for the size of their prey (猎物): with prey like deer, only around six to eight wolves are needed, while hunting wild ox requires a pack of nine to thirteen. Their prey also use this concept to protect themselves from wolves—deer tend to live in smaller herds, which rarely have encounters with wolves, or gather in large herds to reduce the chance of any individual becoming prey.

Despite these many examples of numerical competence in animals, this subject has not gotten many first-hand studies. “Many of these behavioral findings in the wild have usually been collected as by-products or accidental findings of other research questions,” says Nieder. He argues that more research needs to be done to fully understand the numerical competence.

【1】How does the author mainly develop this text?

A.By listing figures.

B.By asking questions.

C.By making comparisons.

D.By giving examples.

【2】What role does numerical competence play in wolves’ hunting?

A.It gives them more options to hunt.

B.It helps them form hunting groups.

C.It makes them discover more prey.

D.It offers them new skills to hunt.

【3】What’s Nieder’s attitude to these instances to prove animals have numerical competence?

A.Positive.

B.Ambiguous.

C.Doubtful.

D.Negative.

【4】What can be a suitable title for this passage?

A.Animals Taught to Distinguish Numbers

B.Animals Learned Numbers to Survive

C.The Smartest Animals in Hunting and Reproduction

D.Animals’ Numerical Intelligence Affects their Survival
