二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   At the first Olympic marathon in 1896, athletes ran a shorter course than today's 42.2-kilometer event. Even so, only the winner finished within three hours. However, runners have improved, and one expert predicted last year that the two-hour mark would be broken in 2028.

On Oct 12, Eliud Kipchoge came in ahead of schedule – literally. The 34-year-old Olympic champion from Kenya became the first person to run a marathon in less than two hours. Clocking in at 1:59:40, Kipchoge pumped his chest and even sped up after crossing the finish line as he ran happily to his wife. 'No one is limited. This shows the positivity of sport, ' Kipchoge told the BBC after the race in Vienna, Austria. 'Together when we run, we can make it a beautiful world. '

Apart from Kipchoge's strong willpower and outstanding physical condition, a few tricks of science and technology helped him reach this milestone in human athletic achievement.

Hills and turns slow runners down, so Kipchoge's team picked the course in Vienna for its gentle curves (弯曲度).

The city's cool and dry weather was also important, said Wired. The magazine talked to exercise physiologists, who think the weather helped keep Kipchoge's body running more efficiently throughout the race.

A special pair of shoes also played a big part. According to The New York Times, the shoes Kipchoge wore were designed to give a significant edge (优势) to anyone wearing them in a race.

One other key to this breakthrough was Kipchoge's pacing strategy. He ran with a dream team of pacers, deployed by sports scientists. Five runners formed a V-shape ahead of Kipchoge, reducing drag (阻力), and two runners followed directly behind to push him forward. Kipchoge stayed in the center of the formation. The team rotated (轮换) members every five kilometers, and he stayed under a two-hour pace for almost the entire length of the race. There was also a pace car driving 15 meters in front of everyone, casting a laser (激光) line on the road to keep them on track.

'Few world records today are technology free, ' noted The Telegraph. Hard work and dedication are still the core (核心) of athletic achievement, but science and technology are helping modern athletes maximize their potential.

D.Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya set a new marathon record in less than two hour.

2What factor does not benefit Eliud Kipchoge in the challenge?

A.His strong willpower B.Physiologists' talk

C.His extraordinary physical condition D.Special running shoes

3What's the closest explanation of the underlined word?

A.follow B.monitor

C.arrange D.motivate

22、When Taking an Uber-Should You Tip or Not?

Taking an Uber car may no longer be a direct driver-passenger and guilt-free experience. The ride-sharing experience is about to get awkward.

With the wide application of the Internet, Uber, a new approach to your destination instead of taking an ordinary taxi, has become more popular recently. However, benefits won’t come without its fair share of drawbacks.

Uber drivers are a part of the so-called sharing economy: They use their own vehicles, receive customer reviews via the app’s five-star rating system and make their own hours. Unlike other services, Uber claimed that drivers all over the country could clearly alert customers that tipping is not included. Those drivers that expect to be tipped can make their wishes known. But the company is holding to its official no-tip-required line, according to its website. “Once you arrive at your destination, your fare is automatically charged to your credit card on file—There’s no need to tip.” Although drivers value their independence—the freedom to push a button rather than punch a clock, lack of a clear policy, however, leaves Uber drivers in a vulnerable(脆弱的) position: If they ask a customer for a tip or put up a sign, that customer could give the driver a low star-rating, and the driver could finally be deactivated from the app.

But has the company done a good job working with customers? Some observers say that this new grey area for tipping will create awkwardness about whether they should tip or not—something most Uber customers have not had to deal with until now. Uber did not respond to customers’ comment, just leaving their rating in the air(ignoring it).

Providing an option to tip on an app sends a clear message to customers to reach into their pockets. Nearly 30% people would be more likely to leave a tip if they were presented with a “no tip” button, according to Guinn’s 2015 survey of roughly 500 people. When people are presented with three tip choices—20%, 25% or 30%—they’re more likely to choose the middle option even if it’s more than the traditional 20%, according to a separate 2014 analysis of 13 million New York City taxi rides.

If the service is twice as expensive during a rain storm or public transport delay, the customer has the right not to tip. However, if the driver is extra helpful or avoids traffic to reach your destination in a more timely manner, you could give an extra tip, says Uber, who will leave tipping options in the hands of the consumer rather than the app.

23、Many of us have reached in our pockets, feeling a vibration (振动), wrongly believing our mobile phones have just rung. The phenomenon even has a name: 'phantom vibration syndrome' -and found it is surprisingly common.

Now scientists believe that we are so alert(警觉) for phone calls and messages we are misinterpreting slight muscle spasms (痉挛) as proof of a call. Robert Rosenberger, an assistant professor at the Georgia Tech Institute of Technology has studied the delusional calls. He said sufferers describe a vague tingling feeling which they think is their mobile phone indicating it has received a text message or call while on ‘silent’. But when the device is retrieved, there was no one on the other end.

Dr. Rosenberger said "I find so many people say, ‘This happens to me, but I thought I was the only one. I thought I was odd. "It seems that the syndrome particularly affects people at the beck and call of mobile phones or pagers. A 2010 study by Michael Rothberg and colleagues found that nearly 70 per cent of doctors at a hospital in Massachusetts suffered phantom vibrations. A more recent study of US college students found the figure was as high as 90 per cent.

While the odd feeling is widespread, it does not seem to be considered a grave problem. Dr. Rosenberger said: "it's not actually a syndrome in a technical sense. That's just the name that's got stuck to it." He added: "Only 2 per cent of people consider it a problem.”

While widespread, the scientific community has not yet invested much effort in getting to the bottom of why we suffer phantom calls.

Dr. Rosenberger said: "People are guessing it has something to do with nervous energy. The cognitive (认知的) scientists are talking about brain chemistry, cognitive pathways changing. But it's not like they have brain scans to go on." He said: "We have a phone call in our pocket all the time and it becomes sort of an extension of ourselves. We have this sort of readiness to experience a call. We feel something and we think, OK, that could be a call.”

1Why do some people mistake slight muscle spasms for a call?

A. They all have a vivid imagination.

B. They are sensitive to calls and messages.

C. There are few calls and messages in their life.

D. Slight muscle spasms affect them more than other people.

2Which of the following are more likely to have phantom vibration syndrome than others?

A. Doctors.

B. University professors.

C. College students.

D. The cognitive scientists.

3In Dr. Rosenberger's opinion, phantom vibration syndrome ________.

A. isn't a kind of disease actually

B. is considered a problem by most people

C. is a serious problem ignored by people

D. has something to do with brain chemistry

4What does the text mainly talk about?

A. Most people have phantom vibration syndrome.

B. How to keep away from phantom vibration syndrome.

C. How to reduce phantom phone vibrations.

D. People care too much about phantom phone vibrations.

24、Millions of migratory(迁徙的)birds occupy seasonally favorable breeding(繁殖)grounds in the Arctic, but scientists know little about the formation, maintenance and future of the migration routes of Arctic birds and the genetic determinants of migratory distance. In a new study, a multinational team of researchers under the leadership of Dr. ZHAN Xiangjiang from the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences integrated two state-of-the-art techniques-satellite tracking and whole genome sequencing(基因排序)-and established a continental-scale migration system of peregrine falcons in Eurasian Arctic.

The researchers tracked 56 peregrine falcons from six Eurasian Arctic breeding populations and sequenced 35 genomes from four of these populations to study the migration of this species. They found that the birds used five migration routes across Eurasia, probably established between the last Ice Age 22, 000 years ago and the middle-Holocene 6, 000 years ago. “Peregrine falcons initiated their autumn migration mainly in September, and arrived at their wintering areas mainly in October, " said Professor Mike Bruford, an ecologist at Cardiff University. “Peregrine falcons that depart from different breeding grounds use different routes, and winter at widely distributed sites across four distinct regions. Individual birds that were tracked for more than one year exhibited strong path repeatability during migration, complete loyalty to wintering locations and limited breeding dispersal(扩散). ”

The researchers quantified the migration strategies and found that migration distance is the most significant differentiation. They used whole genome sequencing and found a gene-ADCY8, which is known to be involved in long-term memory in other animals in previous research- associated with differences in migratory distance. They found ADCY8 had a variant at high frequency in long-distance migrant populations of peregrine falcons, indicating this variant is being favorably selected because it may increase powers of long-term memory thought to be essential for long-distance migration.

“Previous studies have identified several candidate genomic regions that may regulate migration-but our work is the strongest demonstration of a specific gene associated with migratory behavior yet identified, ”Professor Bruford said. The researchers further looked at models of likely future migration behavior to predict the impact of global warming. If the climate warms at the same rate as it has in recent decades, they predict peregrine populations in western Eurasia have the highest probability of population decline and may stop migrating altogether.

“Our work is the first to begin to understand the way ecological factors may interact in migratory birds, ” said Dr. ZHAN Xiangjiang. “We hope it will serve as a cornerstone to help conserve migratory species in the world. ”

【1】What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?

A.Five birds’ historical migration routes were rebuilt.

B.Peregrine falcons stick to the areas where they winter.

C.Two novel research methods of migration were invented.

B.It serves as a fundamental part of long-distance migration.

C.It could be strengthened by the power of long-term memory.

D.It turned out to be more favored by birds than the other animals.

【3】What is special about the new study?

A.It has discovered a new genomic region of birds.

B.It has predicted the rate at which the climate warms.

C.It analyses the reasons for the decrease of peregrine falcons.

D.It encourages attention to environmental effects on migratory birds.

【4】Which would be the best title for this passage?

A.Researchers Help Conserve Migratory Species
