二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Like a phoenix (凤凰), some stars may burst to life covered in “ash,” rising from the remains of stars that had previously passed on.

Two fireballs covered in carbon and oxygen, ashy byproducts of helium fusion (氦聚变), belong to a new class of stars, researchers report in the March Monthly Notices. Though these burning objects are not the first stars found covered in carbon and oxygen, they are the first discovered to have helium-burning cores.

“That merger (并合) tells you the star must have evolved differently,” says study author Nicole Reindl.

The stars may have formed from the merger of two white dwarfs (白矮星), the remaining hearts of stars that exhausted their fuel, Reindl further explains. One of the two was rich in helium, while the other contained lots of carbon and oxygen. These two white dwarfs had already been orbiting one another, but gradually drew together. Eventually the helium-rich white dwarf “ate” its partner, leaving carbon and oxygen all over its surface, just as a messy child might get food all over their face.

Such a merger would have produced a star covered in carbon and oxygen to burn nuclear fusion in its core again, says Tiara Battich, a German astrophysicist.

To test this idea, Battich copied the evolution, death and eventual merger of two stars on his computer and simulated (模拟) the process. He found that putting together a carbon-and-oxygen-rich white dwarf and a more massive helium one could explain the compositions of the two stars observed by Reindl and her colleagues.

“But this should happen very rarely,” Battich says. In most cases the opposite should occur, because carbon-oxygen white dwarfs are usually the more massive ones. For the rarer case to occur, two stars slightly more massive than the sun must have formed at just the right distance and the right time.

The origins story Battich proposes demands a very specific and unusual set of circumstances, says Simon Blouin, a Canadian astrophysicist. “But in the end, it makes sense.”

【1】What’s the newest discovery of the merger of two stars?

A.It produces a mass of helium ash.

B.It possesses a helium-burning core.

C.It is covered in carbon and oxygen.

D.It makes an oxygen atmosphere for life.

【2】How did Battich prove his assumption of the merger?

A.By co-working with Rcindl’s team.

B.By making astronomic observations.

C.By building models on his computer.

D.By testing the two stars’ compositions.

【3】The underlined phrase “the opposite” means ________.

A.the carbon-oxygen white dwarf “ate” the helium one

B.the helium white dwarf “ate” the carbon-oxygen one

C.helium white dwarfs are usually the more massive ones

D.carbon-oxygen white dwarfs are usually the more massive ones

【4】What’s the main idea of the text?

A.The formation of stars makes sense.

B.The burning of stars brings them to life.

C.Stars inspire scientists to reflect on the universe.

D.Star mergers can unfold in more than one way.

22、Anyone with a kid is aware of the fact that kids have a really unusual sense of humor, but there’s no other way to put it. Sometimes it’s a non-funny situation that they find amusing. Whatever it is, you might be wondering what on earth they think is so funny. Up until recently, researchers weren’t sure what the timeline was of developing a sense of humor.

A group of researchers called the Early Humor Survey (EHS) aim to understand just that and help parents get a better understanding of their kids’ sense of humor. They surveyed a group of parents from the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia.

During the first year of their babies’ lives, parents observed the different ways their children appreciated humor and were even able to produce some humor on their own. More than 3/4ths of the parents found their babies laughing by the second month of their lives. By their first birthday, almost all parents reported that their kids were all laughing.

While babies don’t have a full understanding of humor, we are able to see when they’re smiling or if they’re happy. EHS authors were able to see that babies had the ability to appreciate humor before they are able to produce humor themselves.

According to Kids Health, children with a sense of humor are more optimistic, happier and are able to handle differences with others. They are also more well-liked by their peers and show a better handling of adversities of childhood, including bullying, or moving to a new town. Since parents are the biggest role models in children’s lives, it’s safe to say that they develop their sense of humor from interacting with their parents.

23、You’ve heard of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday—they’re major shopping days. Now there’s another shopping day, and it’s called Secondhand Sunday, which is the brainchild of Poshmark, a social commerce marketplace that enables users to buy and sell clothing online, mostly used.

Poshmark asked global research firm Morning Consult to assess the secondhand market. It found over 90% of American adults say they would be willing to receive a secondhand or resold gift this season, but that only 34% are likely to buy them for others. This suggests a massive opportunity to close the gap—a task that Poshmark has undertaken with enthusiasm. Thus, Secondhand Sunday was born.

Poshmark is a platform on which individual sellers run their own shops and make extra cash. Secondhand Sunday has become a hit among them. While sellers have varying motivations for doing business, most are driven by the belief that buying secondhand items is important for the environment.

One such seller is Ashley Wheeler. Her husband worked as a truck driver at a landfill (垃圾填埋) site. They were both shocked at the amount of secondhand items that were getting dumped (倾倒), just because they were considered old or useless. Even when her husband asked to bring home items that still had value, he was rejected, because companies had paid the landfill site to deal with their garbage.

Wheeler said, “For us, that was a wake-up call. We realized it wasn’t just about us bringing our pre-owned items back into the market but finding other used items that companies were ready to deal with and help recycle back into use. That’s when we started to learn about Goodwill Outlets and other similar stores, where we source a majority of items. She now buys cast-off items from Goodwill’s “last chance” bins and resells them on Secondhand Sunday.

Amber McCasland, vice-president of Global Brand and Communications, said, “Secondhand Sunday is our first joint effort to change how people shop and gift during the holidays. The hope is that, instead of running out to buy new items as gifts, people will realize that it’s acceptable and even preferable to source used items instead.”

【1】What drove Poshmark to start Secondhand Sunday?

A.The findings of an assessment.

B.The increasing shopping waste.

C.Booming gift-exchange seasons.

D.Buyers’ strong desire for old items.

【2】What is the key factor for the popularity of Secondhand Sunday according to the text?

A.The great demand for more shopping days.

B.Some local landfill sites’ generous donation.

C.Shoppers’ curiosity about running businesses.

D.The improved public environmental awareness.

【3】What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 5 probably refer to?

A.Working as a truck driver at a landfill site.

B.Being rejected by some brand companies.

C.Seeing valuable used items dumped and landfilled.

D.Looking for secondhand items to resell.

【4】What does Secondhand Sunday encourage people to do?

A.Buy used items as gifts on holidays.

B.Be cautious of online shopping.

C.Donate used items to companies.

D.Form the habit of recycling waste.

24、Adults are happy to tell their children that crusts (面包皮) will give them curly hair, carrots will help them see in the dark, and spinach will make them strong. Even though adults know it's not totally true, they think it's good for their children's health, a study had found.

In a study about 31 per cent of adults said they once told their children the curly hair tale, and 36 per cent said they'd been told the same thing by their mother or father. Among the over-50s, almost half said they'd been promised curly hair if they ate their crusts. A quarter of the 2,000 adults questioned in the study told their children carrots would help them see in the dark. This could be true to some extent because of the high levels of vitamin A and beta-carotene in root vegetables.

Another favorite among parents is that milk will make one strong. A third surveyed said their parents told them this, and about 29 per cent said they told their children the same thing. But while there is plenty of evidence to suggest milk is good for people's health, there are also a lot of scientific papers saying it isn't.

Thanks to Popeye, spinach is also fed to children, along with the idea that it will make them strong. While there is also some truth in this one, scientists now believe it is not the iron, but the inorganic nitrates (无机硝酸盐) that improve physical power.

One in seven of the surveyed admitted telling their little ones that runner beans will make them run faster, which is nothing more than wordplay and has no basis in science. Almost one in five adults were subjected to the same tale in childhood.

Just over one in 10 parents told their children green food would turn them into a superhero, and a quarter admitted hiding vegetables in meals.

Lyndsay Jones, spokesman for Persil Washing Up Liquid, said, "It's clear that the most persuasive stories about food are passed on from generation to generation. Our research shows that the ideas continue, and we tell our kids the same things our parents told us, even if they're not always entirely true."

Crusts may not make your hair curly, but there's plenty of research that says crusts contain more of the goodness than the rest of a loaf. Hopefully, as a result of our Cook with Kids promise, more parents will be encouraged to spend time with their children in the kitchen and teach them the truth about food.

1We can know from Paragraph 3 that ________.

A. a third people are forced to drink milk by their parents
