The child’s mother was very much thankful to the doctor, and she visited him to thank him for what he did for her child. “Doctor,” she said, “you saved my little son. I don’t know how to thank you enough. I feel that money alone cannot repay you, so I make this little purse with my own hands, as a sign of my gratitude (感激). I hope you will accept it.” The doctor stood up and said coldly, “Madam, a little present like that is very nice between friends, but a doctor needs to be paid properly for what he has done.” The lady was so surprised and hurt so much that she could not reply for a moment. Then she said quietly, “Perhaps you will tell me how much your fee (费用) is?”
“Fifty pounds,” he answered.

22、 Thinking about my time in France, I noticed quite a few differences between the French and the English.
The first example is about the French language. In French, there are two ways to say ‘you’: ‘tu’ is the informal (不正规的) form, while ‘vous’ is the formal form. When I learnt French, I was taught to call everyone ‘vous’ unless ( 除 非 ) they were my family or a friend. So I was surprised that everyone in France used the informal ‘tu’ all the time. School children used ‘tu’ with their teachers as well as the head teacher. Even strangers I met in the street would call me ‘tu’, and sometimes ‘tu’ was written on street signs. But I continued to use ‘vous’ because I didn’t want people to think I was being impolite. To be honest, I’m thankful that in English we don’t have to worry about these things!
As you might know, school children in the UK traditionally wear school uniforms but in France pupils do not wear uniforms. It was a culture shock for me to see children wearing Spiderman T-shirts and baggy blue jeans while in the classroom. The final difference was the relaxed attitude at school. Teachers were never in a hurry, and the children and teachers were given long rests and much time to eat their lunch. While in the UK, school day might seem highly pressured (有压力的).
The UK and France are only separated by a small channel of the sea, but there are many differences between the two cultures! Anyway, I cannot deny (否认) what a great chance it was to live and work in another country.
【1】Which of the following is NOT a culture shock to the writer?
A. It takes French students much time to eat lunch.
B. French students use ‘tu’ with their head teacher.
C. Students in France wear different clothes at school.
D. Teachers and students in the UK seem highly pressured.
【2】What might the writer say to his friends when he goes back to the UK?
A. It’s very fantastic to stay in France. B. People in France are more polite than us.
C. The French culture is just the same as ours. D. It’s more difficult to learn French in France.
【3】What is the best title of the passage?
A. Life in France B. Troubles in France
C. Cultural Differences D. Different Languages

24、I come from the Philippines and I do volunteer work in my city, Manila. Over 100 million children in the world live on streets because they don’t have homes. There is an organization (组织) helping street children to get off streets and to live a normal life, and I am one of the volunteers.
There is a big difference between street children and street working children. Street working children make money by selling things, such as candies and newspapers. After they finish their work, they go home. However, street children have no homes. They live and work on streets. Sometimes they sleep at train stations or in parks. They make a living by asking other people for money or stealing (偷) things.
Here in Manila, our organization found a place and there were lots of street children. We talked to sixty of them and gave them food and other help. Day by day, they began to trust us and we provided places for them to eat and sleep. Most of the kids didn’t want to tell us much information. But when they decided to talk to us about their families and where they came from, we listened carefully.
We also have an education program. If the street children learn skills (技能), it will be easy for them to find jobs. We want them to do something for their lives.
