Every year on 15th October, over 200 million people around the world take part in Global Handwashing Day. But why do we have a day for something we do all the time? Well, research shows that not enough people often wash their hands with soap1. This leads to the deaths of millions of people every year.

Sidibe, a public health expert says soap is ‘the most beautiful invention in public health’. 2. 用肥皂洗手对你的健康有好处。

However, washing hands with soap does not happen as often as you might think. This is because there aren’t enough resources(资源) in poorer countries, but it’s also because for many people, handwashing is not part of their everyday life.3. It’s not easy for people to change habits they learned in early childhood. But this is what Global Handwashing Day wants to do.

In 2008, the Indian cricket team joined around 100 million Indian schoolchildren in washing their hands to promote(促进) the first ever Global Handwashing Day. Every year since then, many different events have been held around the world. In 2014, Global Handwashing Day was used in the fight against Ebola, a very serious disease, with events held in affected (受感染的) African countries. 4. 现在在非洲越来越多的人用肥皂洗手。

Today, local and national leaders continue to use the day to spread the importance of cleaning hands. 5. They hope that handwashing becomes a necessary part of people’s lives. And it is believed that handwashing can improve the health of millions of people around the world.

六、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、This is a tale of two friends—one is blind, the other has no arms. On their own, the two are “disabled”. But together, they are a powerful team that has changed part of their village in North China’s Hebei Province into a rich, green forest. Meet 53-year-old Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi!

Their story began in 2000, when Haixia, who was already blind in his right eye, lost his left one after an illness. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident when he was just three. Neither (两个都不) could find a job, so the two decided to team up. They rented (租用) some poor land and began to plant trees. In return, the local officials paid them a small fee (费用).

Haixia and Wenqi never imagined (想象) that they would end up creating an environmental paradise (天堂). Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. Moreover, it saves the village from river flooding during the rainy season.

Today, most Scotsmen look the kilt as a formal dress. They usually only wear them at weddings or big dinners. There are only a few men who still wear a kilt every day.
