21、Today it is found that school students hardly pay much attention to sports. Is it because they aren’t interested in sports? No. They often say they have other more important things to do.
What are these important things? Examinations! Students have to spend much time on all kinds of examinations at school. So many of them almost become bookworms(书呆子). Schoolwork stops them from doing sports. Because of the pressure from their parents and teachers, students have to work harder and spend most of their time on books. As for the students, they want to improve their studies so that they can get good results. So it is necessary for them to give all of their free time to their studies and stop their school sports.

22、 British people are well known for the amount(量)of tea that they drink. Each person in the UK drinks about 1.9 kg of tea every year. That’s around 876 cups of tea. Tea is drunk by all sections(阶层)of society. But tea does not grow in Britain. Most of the tea is grown in India and China. So, how did it become an important part of British culture?
Tea arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time British ships were exploring(探索)the world and came across the drink in China. It was not long before green tea was available(可购得的)to buy. However, this was only available to the richer sections of society.
At the beginning of the 1700s, the amount of tea arriving in Britain increased. Black tea arrived at this time. At first people drank this tea exactly as it was in China. They soon found that it mixed really well with a little milk and sugar, giving it a special taste.
In the 1800s, tea was still a thing enjoyed only by people with money. At this time they began to have “afternoon tea”. People drink tea with a snack around 4 p.m. so that they don’t feel hungry between lunch and dinner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent times.
In the late 1800s, the price of tea went down as more tea began to arrive on ships from India and China. It was no longer a drink just for rich people. Tearooms-shops where you could buy and drink tea, started to appear(出现)across the country. At the start of the 20th century, people of all sections began to drink tea.

23、【语篇来自二十一世纪学生英文报·试题原创】
There are certain things you never imagine yourself saying.
“I just got a worm in my eye!” is one of them.
And yet I did say it—I screamed it, actually.
The family was all here and we were in the garden, when I saw a worm nearby. I asked my six-year-old grandson to come over and remove the worm. He picked up the worm, studied it quickly and then threw it into the air.
The worm quickly fell back to earth, landing on my face against my left eyelid. That’s when the screaming started and the jumping up and down.
You know how they say when you meet a small creature, that the small creature is just as afraid of you as you are of it? They lie.
The worm showed no fear. I, however, am still having nightmares about the experience, which was several days ago.
The most important thing in all this is that my grandson said he was sorry to me.
I’d just been reading a book that makes a connection between adults doing the slow and hard work of teaching manners to children and greater levels of civility in society.
Table manners, language manners and even manners in dress all show levels of self-control.
Having self-control limits what we say and how we behave, making many of us appear a good deal better than we really are.
Good manners also have the possibility to make mealtime a pleasant experience, even with small children.
All of my grandchildren, except the ones that can’t yet talk, ask to be excused before leaving the table.
It is a sign of respect for others at the table and a sign of respect for the meal itself. It’s also more pleasant than pushing one’s chair back and running for the back yard.
Those tall enough, and even those not tall enough, also take their dishes to the kitchen.
Manners are what civilize us—around our tables, in our families, homes and our communities.
So when a little boy has the courage to apologize to a grandma who is screaming and jumping up and down, at least we know that our years of teaching young people manners are paying off—one worm at a time.
