二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、Sports like figure skating, ice hockey, speed skating, and ski jumping have been part of Olympic history since the first Winter Olympics were hosted in France, in 1924. But the origins of many Olympic sports stretch back even further.

The ancient origins of skiing

Skiing has been around since early civilization, evidenced by a 5,000-year-old rock carving showing men on skis in Norway, and the discovery of a ski dating back to 6000 B.C. found in Russia. Modern skiing can be traced back to the Scandinavians, who primarily used skis as a means of travel or for other practical purposes. Some of the first official competitions began around 1850 in Norway, with the first recorded race in Sweden held outside Stockholm in 1879.

The British are the ones who transformed skiing from its Scandinavian roots into the highly competitive sport it is now. Alpine skiing or downhill skiing is the most popular form of skiing, and it first appeared in the Winter Olympics in 1936.

The development of snowboarding

Snowboarding originated as a backyard activity known as snurfing—invented by a father to entertain children.

In 1965, Sherman Poppen of Muskegon, Michigan, was looking for something his children could use as a sled. He tied together two skis—creating a toy he named “Snurfer”. Less than a year, the toy exploded into a national craze.

Although an annual championship in Muskegon was sponsored by the makers of the Snurfer, competitors began to create their own boards. Because Poppen had trademarked the term Snurfer, they began to call the sport snowboarding instead. By 1985, snurfing fell out of fashion, but snowboarding had caught on worldwide. It finally became an official Olympic sport for the 1998 Games.

The earliest evidence of curling

The predecessor (前身) of curling is a Scottish game in the 16th century played on frozen lakes and ponds, using smooth stones from riverbeds.

Centuries later, the first curling club was founded in Scotland and received the approval of Queen Victoria in 1843. In the sport, players slide the stones toward a target—earning more points the closer the stone lands to the center. By the 20th century, curling was so widespread that it was one of the few sports played in the first Olympic Games in 1924.

27、Qian Hongyan waited on the starting block, supporting herself using her hands and torso (躯干). When the starting signal sounded, Qian pushed herself in. She won the silver medal in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke (蛙泳) SB5 final in the 11th National Games for Persons with Disabilities held in Xi’an, Shaanxi province in 2021.

Qian, from Luliang of Yunnan province, had both of her legs cut off after getting into an accident in 2000 when she was 4 years old. Her family were extremely poor. With little resources available, her grandfather cut up an old basketball to replace her lower body. Since then, she became well-known for moving around while balanced on an orange ball, earning her the nickname “basketball girl”.

Qian’s passion for swimming dates back to 2007, when she was invited by the local disabled people’s federation to watch the 2008 National Paralympic Games in Kunming, capital of Yunnan. At 11 years old, she joined the provincial swimming team for people with disabilities. However, without legs, it was difficult for Qian to keep her balance in water. “Swimming without legs is like rowing a boat without a rudder (船舵). I tended to swing due to a poor sense of direction.” Qian said. To help her overcome the difficulty, her coach designed a special training plan for her. Every day, she practiced for at least four hours. She made great efforts to enhance her arm strength and balance.

In 2009, she won three gold medals in the provincial contests in Yunnan, as well as one gold medal and two silvers at national events. In 2014, she won another gold medal in the 100m breaststroke final in the Yunnan Provincial Paralympic Games. In the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, she placed ninth in the 100m breaststroke.

28、On social media, you may see "BM girls", who wear small skirts, tiny T-shirts and skinny jeans. The group is named after the Italian fashion brand Brandy Melville. It says its clothes are “one size fits all”.

However, most clothes the brand provides for girls are in small sizes, according to British newspaper The Sun. The brand’s idea of “one size fits all" has made many girls feel uncomfortable.

"For me, the problem was not the fact that I couldn't purchase your clothes. The root of my frustration is in the humiliation I felt when I realized that ... I just wasn't good enough for the Melville brand," young girl Andy Esmond wrote on the website Odyssey. "I got the message loud and clear: If you don't have an ideal body type, we would rather you not wear our clothing."

Esmond is one of many girls around the world who are dissatisfied with their body shapes. According to a 2018 survey conducted by Youth Select Committee in the UK, 8 in 10 teenage girls in the UK want to change their weight or body shape. Tn China, more than half of teenagers want to lose weight to make themselves look better, according to a 2018 survey by Southern Weekly.

But fashion trends like the Brandy Melville clothing line do nothing to ease the anxiety of negative body image. Instead, they feed it further, noted Coppell Student Media. In order to achieve such an "ideal” image, some girls develop eating disorders. Even worse, this trend may lead to low self-esteem, depression and hopelessness.

“The idealization of thinness can be a key factor in worsening the illness and preventing recovery, and fashion retailers should respect diversity in people's natural body shapes and sizes,“ Beat, the UK's leading eating disorder charity, told Fabulous Digital.

After all, beauty doesn't come in a box, or in one form. Just recognize that we are all different and that is something to be celebrated. In fact, accepting your true self can display a natural beauty that cannot be ignored.

【1】What can we know about the group "BM girls"?

A.They are an American fashion brand.

B.They only buy Brandy Melville clothes.

C.They love to wear small-sized clothes.

D.They always share what they wear online.

【2】Why are many girls dissatisfied with the brand Brandy Melville?

A.Because it offers limited sizes in clothing.

B.Because it produces too expensive clothes for them.

C.Because it provides all customers middle-sized clothes.

D.Because it has poor customer service.

【3】How do fashion trends like one-size-fits-all influence consumers?

A.They help people to improve their body image.

B.They set new standards for clothing production.

C.They encourage people to accept their body image.

D.They cause some girls to develop unhealthy body images.

【4】What should fashion retailers do according to Beat?

A.Promote the idea of wearing comfortable clothes.

B.Help customers recover from their illnesses.

C.Value differences in body shapes and sizes.

D.Encourage customers to wear different clothes.

29、William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13,1865. His childhood lacked the harmony (和睦) that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered "little of childhood but its pain". In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family — both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama (戏剧) and poetry.

Yeats had strong faith in coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favourably at the beginning. He didn't lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.

Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats's poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.

He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Price in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produced his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 70. He died in 1939, aged 73.

【1】Which of the following can describe Yeats's family?

A.It filled Yeats's childhood with laughter.

B.It was shocked by Yeats's choice.

C.It was a typically wealthy family.

A.The theme of his poems includes love, nature, history, time and aging.

C.His poems only receive recognition in Ireland.

D.His poems carried traditional forms and modern sensibility.

【3】Where is the text most probably taken from?

A.Yeats's literary achievements.
