二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、Hours after I gave birth to my first child, my husband cradled all five pounds of our boy and said gently, “Hi, sweet pea.” Not “buddy” or “little man.” The words filled me with unexpected comfort. Like most parents, we knew what we’d name our son but never discussed what we’d speak to him. I was witnessing my husband’s commitment to raising a sweet boy.

Boys have always known they could do anything; all they had to do was look around at their president, religious leaders, professional athletes and the statues that stand in cities. Girls have always known they are allowed to feel anything. While girls are encouraged to be not just dancers but also astronauts, boys-who already know they can walk on the moon and dominate Silicon Valley-don’t receive clear encouragement to fully access their emotions. Actually, we don’t need to deny differences between boys and girls. We do need to recognize that children by nature, regardless of gender, harbor(庇护) sweetness that we, as a society, would do well to promote and preserve.

Sweet boys grow up to be men who recognize the strength in being vulnerable(柔弱) and empathetic. Men who are not threatened by criticism or competition from people whom they consider as “other”—be it skin color, sexual orientation, religion, education or whatever. Sweet boys are children who’ve been given, by their parents and wider society the permission to feel everything and to express those emotions without shame.

At a young age, this should be done clearly, in organized forums for discussions at school. Parents must invite their sons to be sad, afraid, hurt, silly and affectionate, and hug them as often as they do to their daughters. Sweet boys learn early on that they can defend themselves against loneliness by reaching out and asking for support.

Boys will not be merely boys. If we let them, boys will be human.

【1】Why was the author filled with surprising comfort in the first paragraph?

A.Sweet pea was a sweet name for a baby.

D.She felt her husband’s love and responsibility to her.

【2】What does the author mainly want to say in the second paragraph?

A.Boys are different from girls.

B.Boys are not raised correctly.

C.Children are born to be sweet.

D.Children should be protected.

【3】Sweet boys grow up to be men who ______.

A.won’t feel shameful to be vulnerable and sympathetic

B.will be more stressed to face competition from others

C.will be threatened by others’ criticism

D.will be treated as vulnerable by others

【4】What is the best title of this passage?

A.How to Raise a Sweet Boy.

B.Boys Are Only Boys.

C.Seeing the Man in Your Son.

D.The benefits of Raising a Boy.

27、One of the most deeply-rooted myths in parenting is the so-called Mozart effect, which says that listening to music by the Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart can increase a child’s intelligence. The idea has been promoted by advocates for arts education and by retailers(零售商) who sell special recordings of Mozart’s works for infants(婴儿) and toddlers(学步的儿童). Some pregnant women have even gone so far as to play Mozart recordings on headphones pressed against their bellies.

So, if you have kids or you’re expecting to have them, how seriously should you take the Mozart effect? Will the child who has no access to Mozart s music when born live a life of mediocrity(平庸)? Relax. There is no scientific evidence that listening to Mozart improves children’s cognitive abilities.

The whole idea came from a small study done in 1993, which found that college students who listened to Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K 448) showed slight improvement in a test of spatial reasoning( 空间推理). This finding was later turned into something unrealistic by the musician and entrepreneur(企业家) Don Campbell, who in 1997 published the best seller The Mozart Effect: Tapping the Power of Music to Heal the Body, Strengthen the Mind, and Unlock the Creative Spirit. Campbell’s claims about the amazing power of Mozart s music was repeated endlessly in the media and sped up the enthusiasm for Mozart-based enrichment activities.

Since then, scientists have examined the claim that Mozart boosts intelligence and found no evidence for it. The original experiment with college students was reviewed in 1999, and the increase in the students’ spatial skills was found to be negligible. In 2007 the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research commissioned a team of experts to examine the scientific literature regarding Mozart and child development, and they found no reason to believe that it boosted intelligence.

【1】Who might be in favor of Mozart effect?

B.Musicians who admire Mozart very much.

C.Businessmen who sell toys and infant food.

D.Pregnant women who want to make their children cleverer.

A.People have benefited a lot from listening to Mozart s music.

C.The media repeatedly stressed the the amazing power of Mozart s music.

D.A small study showed Mozart’s music could make students much smarter.

【3】What does the underlined word “negligible” in the last paragraph mean?

A.obvious.

B.little.

C.strong.

B.To correct a misunderstanding in parenting.

C.To stress the importance of listening to music.

D.To show parents how to make children smarter.

28、Experts used to say a free market is the best way to run an economy. And for years, workers enjoyed the benefits of technology. Technology added jobs and higher income for workers. But another word for technology is automation. And now, some experts see technology as a threat to workers. It is said robots would create a larger economy that would benefit all. Now, experts see a growing gap in income. Less-educated workers are falling further behind.

There are other threats. The economy is now a global enterprise. Off-shoring production has caused workers to lose their jobs as factories in the richer countries closed. The jobs go to low-wage countries.

But technology is the bigger threat. Artificial intelligence is the way machines will replace human workers. AI, as it is known, has the goal of thinking and performing like a human. There are times when AI does things people cannot do as well. There are other times when AI replaces workers.

It is not people with college degrees who face the most loss. It is the workers who have less education. Over time, the gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots” is growing. That is what worries economists.

For big business, the future is clear. Invest in technology. Machines are cheaper than people. There are heavy taxes on wages for workers and employers. However, companies often receive tax incentives to buy machines. They also do not get sick,   take vacations or retire on pensions(退休金).

Experts are not sure about what to do. They agree that education and better job training are one direction to go. What kind of incentives will change some of the approaches to work? Experts say employers should find ways to use AI to help workers, not replace them. There currently is no clear path to future prosperity for less-educated workers.

【1】What may experts agree with?

A.Technology does more harm than good to workers.

B.Economic growth has no connection with technology.

C.A controlled market is the best way to run an economy.

D.Technology causes more threats to less educated workers.

【2】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.AI’s perfect skills.

B.The great threat to AI.

C.Human workers’ intelligence.

D.The reason why AI is a threat to workers.

【3】What does the underlined word “incentives” mean in paragraph 5?

A.Rewards.

B.Prices.

C.Charges.

D.Wages.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.AI concerns experts

B.AI is replacing workers

C.AI is developing fast

D.AI benefits all workers

29、When it comes to the most famous 20th century painters of the United States, Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself, “I would never sit back in rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.” No one could have had a more active old age.

She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12, she left home and was in domestic service until at 27 she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.

Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery(刺绣) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands became too stiff(僵硬的) to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930’s and her death, she produced some 2,000 pictures: careful and lively portrayals of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. “I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it,” she said.
