21、My Buddhist teacher once told me that insomnia was “the process of trying to fall asleep”. He said falling asleep isn’t something you try to do. 【1】 It will occur naturally in the absence of obstacles preventing it.
Sounds right, but what does that mean for those of us who continually come across these obstacles? Sleep is our birthright. But we must focus less on creating the perfect external conditions and more on cultivating an internal environment within our bodies that allows sleep to occur. 【2】 An over activated nervous system.
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is the part of the nervous system that controls any bodily functions that aren’t consciously directed, of course sleep included. 【3】 The answer is literally right under our noses — change the way we breathe, one of the most effective ways to treat insomnia.
【4】 It has a profound effect on the ANS — and it might just change your life. Coherent breathing involves breathing at a relaxed rhythm of five breaths per minute, around 70 percent slower than we usually breathe. Scientific research has found that for most adults, breathing at around five breaths per minute is the best human breath rate and leads to a near-perfect balance in the nervous system. If you make it part of your night-time routine, it might just transform the third of your life that you spend asleep. 【5】
A.And what is the main internal obstacle?
B.Instead, it is an automatic biological process.
C.So how can we breathe our way to better sleep?
D.So how can we reduce this constant activation of our nervous system?
E.There is a powerful breath work technique called “ coherent breathing ” .
F.Coherent breathing can create a relaxation response within just a few minutes.
G.And it might allow you to live the other two thirds feeling happier and healthier.
22、Everyone deserves to love where he or she live. That’s why Tash Frootko, a property developer in Gloucester, England, began the Rainbow Street project in her quiet town four years ago.
Frootko brought a new life to her properties by brightening the outside of each home, transforming her neighborhood into a colorful place. Now, she is partnering with local street artists to take her project a step further and turn Gloucester’s city center into a Rainbow Square.
“We didn’t get recognition from local people at first. But later, an unexpected outcome happened, ”said Frootko.
“It has brought the community together really well, “Michelle, a local citizen said. “If it wasn’t for Frootko, then none of us would have come out and spoken to each other. ”
“I actively seek out areas that can’t receive enough attention and turn them into huge attractive colors for everyone to enjoy and add a much-needed cultural boost for the city, ” Frootko said.
The new Rainbow Square includes an even more special design. Frootko convinced two street artists to get on board and contribute large murals to two buildings on the Square. Power, a street artist and printmaker, has worked on community art projects across the UK. She said, “This was truly a labour of love. With a uniquely designed typeface, shadows and gold leaf, I hope that this mural becomes a much-loved landmark of the city and makes the city attractive.”
The final result of the project was a huge hit, turning a once sleepy collection of streets into a place that celebrates joy and culture. Every local citizen and visitor who walks by is sure to have their day brightened by the art of the Rainbow Square. And all of this is related to Frootko’s strong willpower.

23、In the spring of 2013, my wife and I opened Literati Bookstore in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Opening a community-minded independent bookstore was a dream we’d shared. We were in our late twenties, pursuing adream.
When opening day arrived, we unlocked the door and held our breath. One by one, people walked inside, paged through new books, and discussed favourite authors. The bookstore came alive.
That morning, I had set out a typewriter on our lower level for anyone to use. It was a community-building experiment: What if people could walk into a bookstore and type anything they wanted?
The first typewriter I ever fell in love with was my grandfather’s -a 1930s Smith Corona. My memory of him is limited to impressions: visits to his Florida apartment, beach picnics, and a fascinating black typewriter on his writing desk. One year, long after he passed, Grandma gave me his Smith Corona for Christmas. At the time, I was a struggling writer. Seeing his old typewriter again stirred something in me. His typewriter made writing fun again. And for the first time since his death, I felt connected to him, to a past I never really knew.
The typewriter I set out on opening day was a light blue Olivetti Lettera 32. I inserted a clean piece of paper and let it be: the world’s smallest publishing house, waiting for an author. One of the notes I found that first day was: Thank you for being here. I didn’t see the typer’s identity, so it appeared as though the typewriter itself was thanking me. Soon, more notes accumulated. Typewriting had become part of our bookstore’s identity.
Customers and friends began encouraging me to turn these notes into a book. At first, I was hesitant. But then I read through the piles of messy, typewritten pages again. Some made me tear up; many made me laugh out loud. They shouldn’t be locked inside my filing cabinet at home. Inside our store, surrounded by books that have been labored over by authors, editors, and marketers, there’s a way for people to publish directly into the world in permanent ink spelling errors and all.
【1】Why did the author set out a typewriter in the bookstore?
A.To honour his grandfather.
B.To provide convenience to customers.
C.To offer people a way to express themselves.
D.To respond to community residents’ requirement.
【2】How did the author feel when he got Smith Corona as a gift?
A.Curious.
B.Amused.
C.Surprised.
D.Inspired.
【3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.There was a publishing house in the bookstore.
B.The bookstore was famous for its unique typewriter.
C.The typewritten notes were full of spelling errors.
D.The author would publish a book consisting of those notes.
【4】What message does the text intend to convey in this passage?
A.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
B.Everyone can be a writer of his own life.
C.It only takes a typewriter to be an author.
D.Books are the ever-burning lamps of accumulated wisdom.
24、People realize that, although animals may not have the same intelligence as human beings, they are smart enough to learn certain things.
Dogs are extremely useful as companions for blind people. When a dog has been properly trained, he will always lead his blind master in the right direction and keep him out of danger. For example, seeing-eye dogs learn never to cross a busy road when cars are coming, even if their master ordered them to do so.
Horses are also able to learn many things. Horses that are used for guard or police duty must learn never to be frightened of noises, traffic, and other disturbances. Racing horses are able to run much faster than other horses, but they are also quite high strung (易紧张). Therefore, it is necessary for those people who train them to be very patient and understanding.
The moving pictures and television can use trained animals too. Some animals, such as monkeys and foxes, are easy to film. All you have to do is make a trail in front of the camera by dragging something that smells good to the animals over the ground. Big animals, such as lions and tigers, can be photographed as they bound happily back to their families and dinner. If a movie actor is nearby, the well-trained animal will pay no attention to him. However, the audience may imagine that the actor escaped a terrible death by the skin of his teeth.
【1】【1】Dogs who help blind people must learn
A. to obey all orders B. to obey only safe orders
C. never to cross roads D. to cross road when ordered to do so
【2】【2】Race horses are hard to train because they are .
A. faster than other horses B. smaller than other horses
C. clever than other horse D. more nervous than other horses
【3】【3】What does “make a trail” mean here in the last paragraph?
A. place something to attract the animal B. give the animal a certain task
C. order the animal to do things D. follow the animal to hunt
