24、 Many people complain about their bad memory, especially when they are older. How can we improve our memory?
Many people think that repeating things is the best way to remember them. While this undoubtedly helps short-term memory(remembering a telephone number for a few seconds, for example), psychologists(心理学家)doubt whether it can help you remember things for very long. The British psychologist E. C. Stanford seemed to prove this point when he tested himself on five prayers(祈祷文)that he had read aloud every morning for over 25 years. He found that he could remember no more than three words of some of them! More helpful, especially for remembering numbers, is grouping the information. The following numbers would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919931848. But look at them in chunks, and it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1993 1848.
According to experts, there are many ways of training your memory. Many of them involve forming a mental picture of the things to be memorized. One method, which may be useful in learning foreign languages, is to create a picture in your mind connected to a word you want to remember.
Another method is to invent a story that includes all the things you want to remember. In experiments, people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this skill; when tested afterwards, on average, they were able to recall 90% of them!
However, not all of us are interested in learning long lists of names and numbers just for fun. For those studying a large amount of information, psychologists suggest that the best way to form meaningful connections is to ask yourself lots of questions as you go along. So, for example, if you were reading about a particular disease, you would ask yourself questions like: "Do people get it from water?", "What parts of the body does it influence?" and so on. This is said to be far more effective than time spent "passively" reading and re-reading notes.

26、On the fourteenth day of the eighth month of 2021, it rained at the highest point of the Greenland ice sheet(格陵兰冰盖) . This is normally the coldest part of the ice sheet and there has never been rain before. It’s such a big weather change that people think it is because of the climate change.
The Greenland ice sheet is a layer(层) of ice about 2.3 kilometers thick on average. It covers a huge area-about 1,833,900 square kilometers. It’s one of the planet’s two biggest ice sheets. The other one is on Antarctica(南极洲) .
The Greenland ice sheet is normally a quite cold place. The ice sheet’s summit, or highest point, is normally even colder. It’s two miles above sea level and 500 miles (about 800 kilometers) away from the Arctic Circle(北极圈) . So it’s very peculiar for the temperature to be above freezing(冰点) at the summit.
Though scientists have been studying the summit closely for over 40 years, they have never seen rain there before. Still, that’s exactly what happened on August 14. The temperature rose to just above freezing at the summit, and it rained for several hours. The event was so surprising that the scientists didn’t even have the proper tools to measure how much rain fell.
Ted Scambos is a scientist studying glaciers(冰川) . He said, “It’s hard to imagine such a thing without the influence of global climate change.”
【1】What happened to the highest point of the Greenland ice sheet according to Paragraph 1?
A.The rainfall there was decreasing.

A.The Greenland ice sheet is one of the planet’s two biggest ice sheets.
B.The temperature at the top of the Greenland ice sheet is hardly below zero.
C.The rain at the top of the Greenland ice sheet lasted several days.
D.Scientists have been studying the summit for many months.
【3】Why didn’t scientists have the proper tools to measure rainfall?
A.Because they didn’t know where the tools were.
B.Because they didn’t think it would rain there.
C.Because they lost the tools.
D.Because they broke the tools in an accident.
【4】What is the best title for the passage?
A.Climate change around the world
B.The environment problems of Greenland
C.First known rain at top of the Greenland ice sheet
