25、Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?
Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain "remains more awake" than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.
The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it "first-night influence". "In Japan they say, 'If you change your bed, you can't sleep,'" said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report's writers. "You don't sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it."
The researchers measured brain waves (测量脑波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart (间隔). They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.
Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.
Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don't know if the left half keeps "watch" all night, or whether it "works in shifts (轮换) with the right half later in the night". They also do not know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.
For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is "looking out for us" in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research, makes it harder to get the sleep people need to wake up well rested in the morning.

26、Reading is a good hobby for all kinds of reasons.
First, reading is fun. You can always keep yourself happy if you like reading. You will never feel bored or tired.
Next, you can read a book almost anywhere—in a car, on a plane, or even in the bathroom. All you need is a book!
Another good reason for reading is that it is useful. If you read as a hobby, you will get better and better at it. And you will read faster and find it easier to understand what you read. As your reading skills improve, you will probably find your schoolwork becomes much better.
Some people say that reading is out of date. This is not true. You can read on computers, and the better you read, the better your computer skills will be.
Good readers may become writers too. They always have more things to write about.
If you wish to become a good reader, here are four important points to remember about speed of reading:
Knowing why you are reading—what you are reading to find out—will often help you to know whether to read quickly or slowly.
Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are instructions for making or doing something, solving math problems, and science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important idea.
Some things should be read quickly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and news from local newspapers, which tell what was happening to friends and neighbors.
In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow or from slow to fast as you go along. You need to read certain pages quickly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

A.almost anywhere
B.when you are driving a car

When did you last see a polar bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. 【1】 That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a little higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. 【2】 First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group; this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Doctors don’t agree about the medical effects of cold-winter swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body’s temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. 【3】 Their research shows the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
【4】 They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统) because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.
The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental(精神的). 【5】 As one 70-year-old woman says, “When I go into water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.”
A.The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming.
B.However, other doctors believe the colder the water is, the better effects it will have.
