二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、I went online to check if my pay was in my bank account. To my amazement I discovered that not only had I been paid, a company I’d never worked for had also paid me! I knew I’d have been beside myself if my own salary was not in my account, so I tried to get the money back to the right person. Easier said than done.

The bank couldn’t help as it wasn’t a bank problem. The human resources department at the company that paid me was unable to help as I didn’t have enough details. I rang the bank again. Thankfully, I had a sympathetic call operator who gave me a name, so I again rang the company “Daniel” worked for.

I expected the bank would contact me to arrange to take the money from my account and repay Daniel. I heard nothing for a month and the money remained in my account when Daniel called, explaining he’d tried to get back his money but had been unsuccessful as neither the bank nor his company felt it was their error. He had rung to ask if I could speak to the bank, but after chatting for a few minutes we realized we could probably fix this problem ourselves.

We decided I would take the money from my account and he would pick it up from me. Due to my busy job I was unable to meet Daniel personally but he left me a lovely bottle of wine in exchange for what was rightfully his. I never had any intention of keeping Daniel’s pay but red tape(繁琐手续) made it difficult to do the right thing. It all came down to two people being able to do what a huge bank and a large company couldn’t do--admit a mistake has occurred and fix it.

【1】What was the attitude of the author towards the extra money in his bank account?

A. He didn’t know what to do with it.

B. He felt lucky to get it.

C. He thought of keeping it for himself.

D. He wanted to return it to the right person.

【2】The underlined phrase “beside myself”(in Paragraph1) probably

means___________.

A. very fortunate B. very angry

C. really thankful  D. at ease

【3】How was the problem solved in the end?

A. The author and Daniel solved the problem themselves.

B. It cost Daniel a lovely bottle of wine to get back his money.

C. The author gave the money back to the company.

D. The call operator offered to solve their problem

【4】From the passage we can infer that___________.

A. the bank could solve the problem soon and easily with the red tape

B. some large organizations usually have troublesome official rules

C. Daniel didn’t know the error before he contacted the author

D. the company gave the wrong account to the bank

22、We all like watching online videos of dogs and cats doing funny things. But if you had to decide, which of the two animals would you say you might like better? Your answer may say something about your personality.

According to a 2010 study led by Sam Gosling, a scientist at the University of Texas, US, dog people are about 15 percent more outgoing and 13 percent more pleasant to be friends with than cat people.

This is not hard to understand, since cats and dogs behave differently themselves. "Cats will occasionally engage in social activities, but usually after only a few minutes, they will abandon the game. Dogs, on the other hand, will often engage in play, like fetching a thrown ball, for hours at a time," said Modern Dog Magazine.

Although cat people are less social, Gosling's study showed that they are 11 percent more open-minded than dog people. They usually like art, adventures and unusual ideas. They also have more imagination and curiosity. But dog people are more likely to stick to old beliefs and traditional interests.

However, their love of a free lifestyle also means that cat people dislike making plans. They just follow whatever ideas pop into their heads without planning ahead. But dog people are different. They usually have strong self-control and like to carry out their plans.

Despite these big differences between dog people and cat people, there are some things that they have in common. "Both types of people consider themselves close to nature, dislike animal-print clothing, and are generally optimists," noted Mother Nature Network.

But can personality change? Can a cat person become a dog person, or the other way around? In a study done by Stanley Coren, a scientist based in Canada, he asked cat owners: "If you had enough living space and there were no objections form other people in your life, and someone gave you a puppy as a gift, would you keep it?"

About 68 percent of them said they would not accept a dog as a pet. But when dog owners were asked the same question about a kitten, almost 70 percent said they would allow a cat into their lives.

【1】According to the article, compared with cat people, dog people ______.

A.perform better in school

B.are more open-minded

C.have closer friends

D.are more traditional

【2】What does the underlined phrase "engage in" in Paragraph 3 probably means?

A.take little interest in

B.take part in

C.benefit from

D.suffer from

【3】What do cat people and dog people have in common?

A.Both of them like planning ahead.

B.Both of them love travelling and adventures.

C.Both of them are imaginative and curious.

D.Both of them care about nature.

23、   Katherine Rooks remembers when she first learned that a punctuation mark (标点符号) could be so powerful. The Denver-based writer had sent her high school-aged son a text message — coming home from school. “I could tell from his response that he was offended (冒犯) all of sudden. And when he came home, he walked in the door, came over and said, ‘What did you mean by this?’” Rooks was confused. How could a simple text message send confusion?

“And so we looked at the text together and I said. ‘Well, I meant, see you later, or something. I don’t remember exactly what it said.’ And he said, ‘But you ended with a period (句号)! I thought you were really angry!’” Rooks wasn’t angry, and she explained to her son that periods are how you end a sentence.

But in text messaging — at least for younger adults — periods do more than just end a sentence: they also can set tone. Gretchen McCulloch, linguist (语言学家) said that when it comes to text messaging, the period has lost its original purpose because rather than needing a symbol to indicate the end of a sentence, you can simply hit send at the end of your message. That doesn’t mean the period has lost all purposes in text messaging. Now it can be used to indicate the gravity of a situation or a sense of finality (终结).

However, caution is needed, said McCulloch, noting that problems can start to arise when you combine a period with a positive emotion, such as “Sure.” or “Sounds good.” “Now you’ve got positive words and serious punctuation and the clash between them is what creates that sense of passive-aggression (消极对抗),” said McCulloch.

Our language has developed, and “what we have done with our incredible linguistic genius is finding ways to insert some kind of emotional, interpersonal information into texting,” said Celia Klin, a psychology professor at Binghamton University. “And what we have is things like periods, emoticons and other kinds of punctuation. So people have repurposed the period to mean something else.” And that something else is passive-aggression.

【1】What left Rooks at a loss?

A.Her son’s untimely coming home.

B.Her son’s heavy reliance on text messages.

C.Her son’s inability to adapt to high school life.

D.Her son’s unexpected reaction to the message.

【2】What did the son think of the period?

A.It aroused his anger.

B.It meant seriousness to him.

C.It brought embarrassment to him.

D.It appeared in an improper position.

【3】What does the underlined word “clash” in paragraph 4 mean?

24、Two brothers decided to dig a deep hole behind their house. As they were working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch.

“What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors.

“We plan to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” one of the brothers said excitedly.

The older boys began to laugh, telling the younger ones that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a long silence, one of the diggers picked up a jar full of spiders, worms and all kinds of other insects. He removed the lid and showed the wonderful contents to the scoffing(嘲笑)visitors. Then he said quietly and confidently, “Even if we don’t dig all the way through the earth, look what we found along the way!”

Their goal was far too ambitious(有野心的), but it did cause them to dig. And that is what a goal is for to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen; in other words, to set us to digging!

But not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end successfully. Not every relationship will endure(长久持续). Not every dream will be realized. But when you fall short of your aim, perhaps you can say, “Yes, but look at what I found along the way! Look at the wonderful things which have come into my life because I tried to do something!”

It is in the digging that life is lived. And I believe it is joy in the journey, in the end, that truly matters.

【1】Which of the following is NOT the reason why the older boys laughed at the two brothers?

A. The two brothers only dug out a lot of insects

B. The two brothers lacked knowledge of the earth.

C. The two brothers were foolish.

D. The two brothers had a far too ambitious goal.

【2】What does the underlined part “when you fall short of your aim” probably mean?

A. When you are shorter than you expected

B. When you have less than the amount than you wanted

C. When you fail to obtain(得到)what you expected

D. When you miss the target you are aiming at

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

Offshore production

The world’s consumption of fashion is huge. The European Union imported textiles (clothing and carpets) to the value of €83.7 billion in 2010. Prices have fallen, too, with hand-finished shirts costing less than five euros. To make clothes at these low prices, companies have to keep costs down. They use offshore production to do this. Large companies make their products in developing countries where workers are paid much less than in developed countries.

A point that should be considered in that case is that developing countries encourage developed countries to invest in them to provide jobs. Supporters of overseas production point out that increased investment has positive effects in the long term. Nobel prize-winning economist Paul Krugman points out that the growth in manufacturing has an impact on the rest of the economy, because it reduces the number of people needing to work in agriculture and increases competition for labour. This leads to higher wages, which lead to other improvements, such as the ability to send children to school. On the other hand, the disadvantage of this foreign investment is the fact that it can have a negative impact on the economy of developed countries, because people lose their jobs when production is outsourced to other countries.

It seems that if multinationals are going to benefit from low production costs by using overseas suppliers, they should do more to improve the social situation—for example, by building schools for the children in those communities. It is also clear that multinationals should invest in communities in the developed countries where they sell their products. In conclusion, there are clear benefits for the multinationals in terms of lower costs of production in developing countries and their workers, but they should still do more to protect the workers in overseas manufacturing plants.
