二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Drones (无人机) equipped with hyperspectral and thermal sensors will be applied in Italy to spot trees infected with Xylella fastidiosa, a deadly bacterium that has been destroying the country’s olive crops for almost a decade.

The sensors will be able to detect signs of early infection that cannot be noticed easily, such as slight changes in the color of leaves, allowing farmers to select affected trees and prevent outbreaks. More than 300,000 trees will be examined using the new drone technology in the next few months.

“This technology has the potential to give the Italian government a major advantage in the fight against Xylella,” says Manuela, a researcher of the project. “We tend to realize far too late if a plant is infected - these drone sensors will allow us to spot and prevent outbreaks rather than just react to them.”

Early detection strategies like this are key for controlling Xylella, which is spread by spittlebugs that feed on infected plants, taking in bacteria and passing them to healthy plants nearby. Once the bacteria have infected a plant, they block the xylem vessels that transport water through the plant, cutting off its ability to absorb water and, eventually, killing it.

“Xylella is particularly dangerous because it has many different natural hosts through which it can spread.” says Andrea Maiorano, a plant health expert at the European Food Safety Authority in can spread,” says Andrea Maiorano, a plant health expert at the European Food Safety Authority in Italy. “There are hundreds of different plant species that can host it.”

According to the law, as soon as a tree is found to be infected with Xylella, it must immediately be cut down - along with all species easily affected within a 50-metre radius (半径). A 2.5-kilometre zone around the infected plant is then closely monitored to prevent spread to surrounding trees. The remote-detection drones will ensure that any infected tree in these areas is diagnosed and recognized quicker than ever before.

The hope is that this containment strategy in infected regions can buy time for the rest of the country’s olive plantations until a cure can be found.

【1】What is the problem with the olive crops in Italy?

A.Bacteria infection.

B.Lack of water.

C.Soil pollution.

D.Backward technology.

【2】How do drones help the farmers?

A.By curing the affected trees.

B.By changing the color of leaves.

C.By monitoring the quality of trees.

D.By discovering the unnoticed infection.

【3】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The danger of Xylella.

B.The key of the strategies.

C.The cause of the bacteria.

D.The feature of the drones.

【4】What can we expect of the drones in the future?

A.They will prevent trees from being infected.

B.They will ensure the recognition of the plants.

C.They can speed up the diagnosis of diseased trees.

D.They might help increase country’s olive plantations.

22、What's the most important thing for you to have in your life?Somebody mentions hard work, others suggest knowledge, love and luck.

If you arrange the 26 English letters in the order of the alphabet and use numbers to represent each of them, for example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for cyou can change an English word into a number. So hard-work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98, meaning 98 is its mark; knowledge; 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5=96, while love: 12+15+22+5=54, and luck: 12+21+3+11=47, a small mark. None of these words can give us a full mark. What about money or prayer? They can't, either.

Then what else? Don't be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude. Yes, attitude is the word. See for yourself: attitude: 1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100, a full mark.

Different attitudes lead to different courses of life. Most times people hope for a better life. It is possible that one will have a change for the better after one has changed one's attitude.

When you change your manner and became friendly towards others, you'll meet more smiling faces towards you. In the same way, if you take a positive attitude towards failure, you'll find it's also rewarding though it has caused you losses.

【1】According to the second paragraph, the mark for prayer is________.

A.79

B.83

C.85

D.89

【2】How does the writer express his idea in the passage?

A.By listing numbers.

B.By telling a story.

D.Good manners are very important in social life.

23、Pablo Picasso, the great Spanish painter and sculptor, once said this about his ability, “My mother said to me, if you become a soldier, you’ll be a general.” But he would have agreed with Abraham Lincoln. “Whatever you are,” said Lincoln, “be a good one.” He demonstrated the wisdom of that advice with his own life.

Viennese-born composer Frederick Loewe, whom we remember from his musical scores that include — My Fair Lady, Gigi and Camelot, was not always famous. He studied piano with the great masters of Europe and achieved huge success as a musician and composer in his early years. But when he immigrated (移居) to the United States, he failed as a pianist. For a while he tried other types of work including searching for gold and boxing. But he never gave up his dream and continued to play piano and write music.

During those lean years, he could not always afford to make payments on his piano. One day, bent over the keyboard, he heard nothing but the music that he played with such rare inspiration. When he finished and looked up, he was surprised to find that he had an audience — three men who were seated on the floor.

They said nothing and made no movement toward the piano. Instead, they dug into their pockets, pooled together enough money for the payment, placed it on the piano and walked out, empty handed. Moved by the beauty of his music, these men recognized excellence and responded to it.

Whatever you are, be a good one. When you choose the path of excellence through this life, you will bring to it your best and receive the best it can offer in return.

【1】What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 1?

A.Picasso’s mother is a wise woman.

B.What Lincoln said is right.

C.Everyone can be excellent somehow.

D.It’s important to take others’ advice.

A.He meant to change his original dream.

B.He was struggling on the road to art.

C.He turned to be a miner to make a living.

D.He achieved immediate success as a musician.

【3】Which one can replace the underlined word “lean” in paragraph 3?

A.Unforgettable.

B.Special.

C.Long.

D.Hard.

【4】Which of the following best describes Loewe?

B.Determined.

C.Humorous.

D.Modest.

24、   There are more species of beetles than any other form of life. About 380 000 species of beetles are known to exist, and more are discovered all the time. There are several theories about why there are so many beetles, but fossils evidence shows that beetle species die out less than other animals, Beetle species exist in such huge number because beetles are true survivors. They refuse to die out.

One of the reasons beetles survive so well is their body design. Most beetle species have two pairs of wings. The front pair of a beetle’s wings are hard and thick. They are not used for flying. These protect the back set of wings and the beetle’s stomach. Instead, some species of beetles have lost the ability to fly, but they are still equipped with front wings. The wings protect the beetle’s soft parts from harm. These features help protect beetles, which makes them less likely to die out if they are faced with new predators (捕食性动物).

Beetles can also eat a wide range of foods. Beetle species live all over the world, and they have many different types of food available to them. Most beetles are omnivores. That means they eat both plants and animals. Their mixed diets help beetles adapt to many different habitats. Over the course of time, food sources, like certain plants and animals, do not exist anymore. Others spring up. The beetle survives because it can find something to eat, no matter what.

Finally, beetles are good at moving quickly over long distance. Any change in an animal’s environment can be dangerous to it. For example, many species died out during the Ice Age, when Earth’s temperature dropped for a long time. However, some species can avoid dangerous environment changes by moving to a new place. Research shows that beetles respond quickly to shifts in temperature. They can move to safer environments.

Beetles’ bodies and habits help give them an edge over other creatures. They are unlikely to die out. As a result, beetles make up nearly one quarter of all animal species. There are more types of beetles on Earth than there are types of plants. Some types of beetles that exist today were around during the Permian period of history, 284 million years ago. Beetles, clearly, are here to stay.

1What is important about a beetle’s front wings?

A.They are used to catch the prey.

B.They enable the beetle to fly.

C.They help the beetle move quickly.

D.They protect the soft body parts.

2How do beetles respond to changes of habitats?

A.They are adaptable to the food change.

B.They can change their body temperature.

C.They are adaptable to the freezing cold weather.

D.They can use their wings to fight against the cold.

3What is the most probable title of the passage?

A.The Ice Age affected the beetles

B.Different habitats affected the beetles

C.Beetles: the six-legged survivors

D.Beetles: the unique predators
