22、Mick lives in a town. He is known as “the bike man”. Over the past five years, Mick has built hundreds of bicycles for needy kids.
One day five years ago, a 13-year-old boy with a broken bike walked by Mick’s house. “I was working in my garage, and he asked if I could fix it,” says Mick, now 53.
The boy left his bike, which had a broken bracket (支架), with Mick, who asked friends on Facebook if they had the missing part. The town’s former police chief saw the post and donated two used bicycles. Mick took parts from each to make a new set of wheels for the boy.
Soon after, Mick, repaired a bike for the boy’s brother and assembled one for his sister. Word spread, and within the year, he had fixed up dozens of bikes for local kids whose parents couldn’t afford to buy new ones.
“People were dropping off bikes day and night,” says Mick, “It’s great that I can reuse them for kids who need one.” Mick stores the bikes and bike parts in his garage. “I take off the good tires or the handlebars or the seat and use them,” he says.
So far, the bike man has repaired hundreds of cycles and given away nearly 700 newly constructed bikes. They’re free, but the kids must agree to two things: They’ve got to mind whoever’s raising them, and they’ve got to try in school. If a kid’s grades are low, Mick requires a teacher’s note, saying “You’re doing your best,” Mick says.
Mick also hopes the bikes will get kids away from television and mobile screens, “When I was growing up, we all rode our bikes,” he says, “Hopefully these kids can get some exercise.”

23、YANG YUANQING, Lenovo’s boss, hardly spoke a word of English until he was about 40: he grew up in rural poverty and read engineering at university. But when Lenovo bought IBM’s personal-computer division in 2005 he decided to immerse himself in English: he moved his family to North Carolina, hired a language tutor and — the ultimate sacrifice — spent hours watching cable-TV news.
Lenovo is one of a growing number of multinationals from the non-Anglophone world that have made English their official language. The fashion began in places with small populations but global ambitions such as Singapore and Switzerland.
Corporate English is now invading more difficult territory, such as Japan. Rakuten, a cross between Amazon and eBay, and Fast Retailing, which operates the Uniqlo fashion chain, were among the first to switch. Now they are being joined by old-economy companies such as Honda, a carmaker, and Bridgestone, a tyre maker. Chinese firms are proving harder to handle: they have a huge internal market and are struggling to enroll competent managers of any description, let alone English-speakers. But some are following Lenovo’s lead. Huawei has introduced English as a second language and encourages ambitious employees to become fluent.
There are some obvious reasons why multinational companies want a lingua franca(共通语). Adopting English makes it easier to recruit global stars (including board members), reach global markets and assemble global production teams. Such steps are especially important to companies in Japan, where the population is shrinking.
Tsedal Neeley of Harvard Business School says that “Englishnisation” can stir up a hornet’s nest of emotions. Ms Neeley argues that companies must think carefully about implementing a policy that touches on so many emotions. Senior managers should explain to employees why switching to English is so important, provide them with classes and conversation groups, and offer them incentives(刺激) to improve their fluency. Those who are already proficient in English should speak more slowly and try not to dominate conversations. And managers must act as referees and enforcers, resolving conflicts and discouraging staff from return to their native tongues.
Intergovernmental bodies like the European Union are obliged to pretend that there is no predominant global tongue. But businesses worldwide are facing up to the reality that English is the language on which the sun never sets.

24、 As we know birds do not have teeth. However, according to a new study, this was not always the case. About 116 million years ago, the ancient birds had teeth and used them for eating, just like what they do today. The new study was conducted by a team of researchers that analyzed the remains of the tooth gene in modern birds and tried to find out why the teeth suddenly disappeared in birds during the process of evolution.
Because the fossils of ancient birds, buried deeply in the earth, are either broken or not preserve(保护)well, their use in determining this evolutionary(进化)change has not been helpful. Researchers have instead focused on analyzing the DNA of modern birds. The aim of the study is to search for clues in the genes of birds that explain the loss of teeth during evolution.
In the absence of teeth, birds heavily rely on their beaks(鸟嘴)to process food. They also have an excellent ability to digest the food properly. However, at some point in history, birds used to rely on their teeth for chewing(咀嚼)food just like us.
The earliest known clue in this regard was found in Germany in 1862. The fossil of an ancient bird found there, suggested that birds had teeth in the past. Today, scientists have confirmed(确认)that birds evolved form dinosaurs that were known for their sharp and pointed teeth.
Until now, there has been no definite explanation of the significant evolutionary change in birds. In the ongoing study, researchers analyzed the genes of modern birds that are responsible for tooth production. They searched for any kind of genetic mutation(基因突变)that may have made the gene to become inactive. The gene mutation first occurred about 116 million years ago.
