“Uno,dos, tres…”James counted out loud the number of pages in his history report. His older brother,Matt, sat across the kitchen table from him.
“What are you doing now,James?”asked Matt, slightly bothered by James’s loud voice. “I’m trying to study for my math test. I can’t focus on my study if you keep talking.”Matt complained.
“I need to count the number of pages. We need to have at least five pages about the American Revolution. So far I only have three.”
“Why do you have to count out loud? Why does it have to be in Spanish?”Matt asked.
“Because we’re learning our numbers in Spanish class. My Spanish teacher said that speaking to others loudly instead of reading to ourselves will help us with our pronunciation.”
“I’m going to another room,”Matt said as he picked up his books.
“Okay, but you’ll be sorry when the day comes that I know Spanish and you don’t,” James joked.
A few weeks later,James and Matt visited the local grocery store. While they were there,Matt saw a sign written in Spanish.
“James,”Matt said to his brother.“Do you know what this sign says?”Matt asked, expecting James to stare at the sign without understanding.
To Matt’s surprise,James read the sign out loud.“The sign says,‘Hello. Welcome to our store,” James said. Matt was surprised. He knew that James had been practicing Spanish, but he did not realize that his brother was advancing that quickly.
“I can also read that sign over there,”James said, pointing to a sign warning customers about the wet floor.
“Well,James,”Matt said as they walked out of the store.“I’m impressed by how quickly you are learning to speak Spanish.”

22、At first glance, there is nothing unusual about the BingoBox store—shelves stacked with snacks line the walls, tempting passers-by through the glass windows. But on closer inspection, BingoBox is no ordinary store. The door opens only after customers scan a QR code to enter, and there is no cashier to tally up purchases—just a lone checkout counter in a corner. The Shanghai-based company is one of many unmanned store operators opening outlets all over China, hoping to improve slim profit margins in the retail business by reducing staff costs.
“If capital costs rise quickly, that puts greater pressure on low-margin businesses like convenience stores and supermarkets,” said Andrew Song, an analyst at Guotai Junan Securities. “In China, manpower costs have been rising relatively quickly.”
However, the futuristic vision of shopping without a checkout person is still in progress. A reporter who visited a BingoBox store in Shanghai was briefly locked in when he was trying to exit without making a purchase. Although a sign near the exit stated that empty-handed customers can leave by scanning a QR code, no QR code was to be found. Repeated calls to the customer service hotline went unanswered.
Another unmanned operation in China, Take Go, only allows one customer in the shop at a time because of technology limitations in using multiple cameras for scanning customers’ faces.
The idea of unmanned stores first caught the world’s attention when the largest US online retailer announced its cashier-less store, which is only available to employees for now. Since then, some technology companies in China, including the e-commerce firm Alibaba Group, have launched their own versions of unmanned stores.
Embedded with technology such as RFID tags, mobile payment systems and facial recognition systems, such stores collect valuable data that give operators a better idea of consumers’ preference and buying habits, which can then be used to optimize the operation and make more efficient inventory decisions. For BingoBox, lower operating costs also mean it can afford to expand its reach to areas with less foot traffic, according to Chen Zilin, the founder and CEO of BingoBox.

23、A smiling panda and a walking Chinese lantern will be the mascots (吉祥物) of the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Beijing.
The mascots were known to the public on Sept.17, 2019 at a ceremony in Beijing. Beijing Mayor Chen Jining described them as lovely, unique, and awesome. He said they shows Chinese people’s longing for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in a visually attractive way and extends Chinese people’s hospitality to friends throughout the world.
The panda, named Bing Dwen Dwen, is the Olympic mascot. Colourful circles around its face symbolize skating tracks and 5G technology, according to the website of the Beijing organizing committee. “Bing, the Chinese word for “ice”, shows purity and strength, while Dwen Dwen means sincerity, liveliness, and health”, the website said. The choice of the iconic animal, considered the national treasure, is not a surprise to people in China. While many applaud Bing Dwen Dwen for its cuteness on social media, some are not favorably impressed by the lack of creativity in choosing a panda. The giant panda was one of the five mascots of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, and it was also the symbol for the Asian Games in Beijing in 1990.
“Today is an important step on a milestone in Beijing’s journey to make history as the first ever, in Olympic history, to host both summer and winter editions of the Olympic Games,” International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach said at the ceremony.
Based on a traditional red lantern, Paralympic mascot Shuey Rhon Rhon creates a cheerful atmosphere of the Chinese Lunar New Year, which will fall around the time of the Winter Games, the organizing committee said. It is sporting (穿戴) a yellow scarf, a circle of yellow doves around its head, and a traditional Chinese paper-cut. “Shuey” means snow in Chinese and “Rhon Rhon” means “inclusiveness” and “harmonization”, implying that the world civilizations communicate with each other and live in harmony, the committee said.
The two mascots were selected from more than 5800 submission from 35 countries.

24、An old saw has it that there is nothing new under the sun. But it may still come as a surprise that human beings aren’t alone in having invented vaccination (疫苗接种). Work published by Gyan Harwood of the University of Illinois confirms that honeybees got there first. It also suggests they run the vaccination programmes like humans.
One discovery in 2015 is that queen bees vaccinate their eggs by transferring into them antigens (抗原) which start the development of a protective immune response. But that observation raises the question of how the queen receives her antigen supply in the first place, for she lives only on royal jelly (蜂王浆) produced by worker bees who act as nurses to baby bees. Dr. Harwood therefore wondered if the nurses obtain the antigens while eating nectar (花蜜) .
To test this idea, he cooperated with Heli Salmela. Together, they collected about 150 nurse bees and divided them among six queenless hives (蜂巢) with baby bees to look after. Instead of nectar, they fed the nurses on sugar-water, and for three of the hives they mixed the sugar-water with a bacterium that causes a hive-killing disease.
In this case, to stop such an infection happening, Dr Harwood and Dr Salmela heat-treated the bacteria to kill them in advance. They also labeled the dead bacteria with a fluorescent dye (荧光染料) to make them easy to track. And, the result showed that pathogens (病原体) were getting into royal jelly produced by those nurse bees.
All told that nurse bees are indeed, through their royal jelly, passing antigens on to the queen, and then to the eggs. Meanwhile, after they hatch, the eggs receive antigens from the nurses as well, thus being vaccinated twice.

26、阅读下列短文,根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。
“Oh my god, buy it!” I believe that you are very familiar with Li Jiaqi’s phrase. Livestreaming marketing is a method of selling products on live video streaming platforms, which now are mainly Taobao, Kuaishou and Tik Tok. On April 1st, 2020, Luo Yonghao finished his first livestreaming marketing on Tik Tok. Data showed that the total amount of payment reached 110 million yuan in 3 hours, which set the record of livestreaming marketing on Tik Tok.
One of the most popular functions of livestreaming is the “real-time connection”. Although traditional television shopping channels also allow viewers to instantly buy recommended items, they don’t allow hosts to respond to real-time comments, nor can television sales data be readily collected to analyze customers’ purchasing behaviours or performance indicators. With this feature, potential customers can get answers to pressing questions and gain a more comprehensive impression of the products, making promotional activities more convincing and effective.
Under the influence of the current epidemic, online shopping reduces direct contact between folks, having a certain guarantee for the health of residents. At the same time, many industries are hit by the epidemic. In this situation, many businessmen walked into the studio with the aim of recovering some of the damage for the business as much as possible.
Meanwhile, the expanding of 5G has created a favorable environment for livestreaming marketing. Supported by the technology of 5G, the image quality of live stream is clearer, so more details can be showed to customers, which helps to provide them an entirely different experience. “With the arrival of the 5G era, livestreaming will be faster, allowing users to zoom in and out of videos to see more details of products. ” said Xuan De, general manager for content e-commerce at Taobao.
Although livestreaming marketing is developing rapidly, the industry gradually becomes a mixed bag. There is no doubt that livestreaming marketing is popular, but eventually, the key to success is high quality of products.
