二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Our environment isn’t as green and beautiful as it should be. There are steel(钢铁) monsters blocking out the sun, blowing out dangerous smoke, and letting out poisonous chemicals into rivers, cars producing harmful waste gas, people throwing out waste in a wrong way and all other kinds of sources that ruin the planet. Facing current environmental problems, people need to do their best to save the earth.

You can see many big garbage dustbins in the streets. They’re not there for a show, but for you to drop your waste. We should realize that what we do does count. So next time you get that urge to throw gum or a chocolate package out of the car window, or “accidentally” drop as you walk down the street, ask yourself how much waste you’ve been contributing to the environment with that bad habit going on for years.

At home, the first thing we can do to protect the environment is avoid letting water run continuously and make sure that taps(水龙头)are not leaky(漏的),which would help greatly in scrimping. Another is to use energy-saving lights, and turn them off before you leave the rooms. It is not only energy-saving, but also cuts down electricity costs.

Recycling is a method to make items reusable. Many things you want to throw out can be made into new products through the reproducing process. Use your imagination to come up with ways on things that you can use again.

Pass the message of simple ways to save the environment on to kids. Starting with kids is a good way of teaching the message early in their lives, in the hope that they can carry it forward as they grow older.

With environmental protection awareness in mind, we can do what we can, for the results are to have a big effect on the planet. As long as we do our part, the world is one small step closer to being saved.

1In the first paragraph the author uses “steel monsters” to describe________.

A. huge buildings   B. high mountains

2From the fifth paragraph, we can know that ________.

A. protecting the environment begins with small chores

B. protecting the environment should start from childhood.

A. The more people do their part, the greener the environment will be.

B. Selling what you don’t want any more is a kind of recycling.

C. To protect the environment may help you save some money.

D. Your bad habits for the environment are a valuable contribution.

4The passage is mainly about_____________.

A. the use of garbage dustbins

B. how to save water and electricity

C. how to save the environment

D. our current environmental problems

23、   If you’re a cycling lover, you will have to pay a lot of attention to your bicycle and maintain it well, for bicycle parts are exposed to wear and tear (磨损) over time and you have to examine the bicycle to see if there are any signs of wearing such as scratches, dents (凹陷) etc. Sometimes, a part may not work because it has exceeded its life expectancy. Sometimes, you will need to find replacement parts for it to keep up the performance of the bicycle.

Different parts of a bicycle will wear at different rates so it is very important that you have a basic understanding about the role played by each part. One of the most important parts of the bicycle is the frame. You will need to choose a frame that lasts for a very long time. Of course, you will see some paint scratches after some time. When you’re selecting a frame, you have to think about the material. Aluminium (铝) frames will not rust easily, but they have a higher chance to dent. Steel frames will be hard to dent, but you will need to make sure they get a good paint job so that they won’t rust.

Wheels also experience a lot of wear and tear and you should go for a professional seller when you want to buy wheels. There are different types of wheels that you can buy, like Zipp wheels that provide more aerodynamic efficiency (空气动力学效能). Investing in new tyres instead of going for used is a good idea because you will be able to get more use out of it. The same goes for chain as there’s a higher chance of a used chain breaking. You may also experience shifting problems. However, some parts of bicycles such as pedals can be used for a long time and you can find different styles.

Other parts that you can buy used are seats, handlebars and the stem. When you are buying handlebars, you have to see if there are any dents or if they have been bent out of shape. There shouldn’t be any cracks in the seat post or the handlebars. There are many shops where you can buy parts, so you will have to check the references to see how customers respond to them before you buy anything.

【1】According to the passage, cycling lovers should ________.

A.buy a new bicycle to keep up the performance

B.replace the bicycle parts with signs of wearing

C.choose Aluminum frames rather than steel ones

D.learn how each part of the bicycle basically works

【2】Which parts may be replaced by the used ones?

A.Wheels and chains.

B.Tyres and seats.

C.Handlebars and stems.

D.Frames and pedals.

24、   Natural selection is the process by which one type of animal within a species thrives because of certain characteristics that make it more likely to live than others in its group. The history of the peppered moth(灰蛾)is an example of the natural selection process.

In 19th century England, certain types of peppered moths were able to better blend(融合)into their surroundings. During that time period, great changes were happening in Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution was part of this change, and with it came air pollution. Natural selection often takes hundred or even thousands of years to occur. For the peppered moth, this process occurred comparatively quickly.

At the beginning of the Industrial Age, most peppered moths in England were light-colored and covered with black markings, although a few moths had dark-colored wings. Because the light-colored moths blended into the light-colored bark on the trees, they could not be easily seen by birds that would eat them. As the air grew more polluted, however, tree trunks became covered with soot(烟煤)and became darker. The light-colored moths became easy for birds to see against the dark tree trunks. Since the dark-colored moths now had the advantage, their numbers grew. Within 50 years, the peppered moth went from being mostly light-colored to being mostly dark-colored.

In the 20th century, the air cleared up, and the peppered moth population changed again. As tree trunks lighted due to less soot in the air, light-colored moths once again had an advantage. Their numbers increased as soot levels declined. Depending on their environment, the coloration of the moths helped them to be “naturally selected” to survive.

1In 19th century, what was one of the causes of great changes in Great Britain?

A.The surroundings. B.The Industrial Revolution.

C.The natural selection. D.The peppered moth.

2What can we infer about the peppered moth’s natural selection process?

A.The length of time was unusual.

B.The soot levels in England did not affect it.

C.The color of peppered moths changed at random.

D.It was a good example of environmental protection.

3What’s the difference between light-colored and dark-colored moths?

A.Dark-colored moths were originally easy to see on trees.

B.Both kinds of moths preferred the dark-colored trees.

C.Birds failed to see light-colored moths.

D.The color of moths was unimportant.

4Which would most likely happen if soot darkened England’s trees again?

A.Birds would eat fewer moths.

B.Moths would not be able to stay alive.

C.Light-colored moths would disturb people’s life.

D.The population of dark-colored moths would increase.
