21、 The huge Florida wetland known as the Everglades is a slow﹣moving river 80 kilometers wide but only a few centimeters deep. People call the Everglades a "river of grass" because sawgrass covers most of it. Sawgrass is not really grass. It is a plant that has leaves edged with tiny sharp teeth that can easily cut through clothes ﹣and skin!
Travel in the Everglades is difficult. You cannot walk through shallow water because the sawgrass will cut you. The water is too shallow for regular boats. So, we use an airboat. An airboat is a flat, open boat. Like an airplane, it has a big propeller to move it. The propeller is fixed on the rear of the boat. It makes a loud noise but it does the job. The boat skims along the water's surface. Although we can still get lost in an airboat, at least we are above the alligators (短吻鳄).
For a long time, dangers have threatened the Everglades. Around 1900, some people felt this precious wetland should be drained(排干). They said it was just a big swamp and not good for anything. In the 1920s, there was a land boom in Florida. People wanted to build homes everywhere, including in the Everglades. They built canals, levees, and other water systems that stopped the rivers flowing into the Everglades. Factories were built near rivers that flowed into the wetland. These factories poured poisonous waste that damaged the environment of the everglades.
People are now working to preserve the Everglades National Park for the future. Right now one big problem is the paperbark tree. This tree is an invader from Australia.
Paperbark trees soak up a lot of water. In the early 1900s,people brought them to Florida because they thought they would help drain the Everglades. However, the invaders adapted too well. Paperbark trees have taken over hundreds of thousands of acres of the everglades and killed other trees. Scientists are cutting down these trees or spraying them with herbicides to kill them.

22、Speaking with people who are suffering is difficult. 【1】 Sometimes it’s just difficult to know what to say. Words fail us. Here are some tips for talking about illness with loved ones.
【2】 Visit them, or if that’s not possible, just call them. Don’t worry if you weren’t there in their exact hour of need. It’s important to let them know you’ve been thinking of them and that you regret the delay.
Ask specific open questions. Your friend will no doubt have a routine response to “How are you feeling?” So steer away from routine politeness by asking specific open questions, such as, “So much has happened since we last spoke, tell me what’s been going on with you.” 【3】
Don’t argue with them. You may indeed believe that drinking herb tea is a cure-all, or a friend of your friend might well have benefited from a dietary change. 【4】 Your friend is likely exhausted and sensitive, so there is no need to contradict their lived experience. Let them lead the conversation about their health, which is a small concession that you should make.
Know how to assist them. If you’ve given them enough room to talk, you should have a wealth of information about how to help them. 【5】 Do they like being in the garden? Maybe you’ve been cutting your own lawn and could bring the mower round before you put it away.
A.Reach out to your unwell loved one.
B.Approach the situation in a gentle manner.

D.People in pain can often be bad-tempered, distant or greatly in need.

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I arrived at the pool hall on Wednesday with a heavy heart. Teams from other schools were already suited and warming up by the pool or in the water. The bleachers (露天看台) were full.
“I don’t think I can do this.” I said, twisting the belt of my bag.
“You’ll be fine, and I will be right here watching.” Mom said, dropping an arm around my shoulder and squeezing.
I bit my lip and looked out over the other swimmers. “You sure?”
Mom leaned forward. “Remember, it’s just you. Don’t worry about any of the other swimmers. Just swim your race.”
“OK.”
The warmups and preparations were over before I knew it, and the first round of swimmers were up on the blocks.
I felt sick. I watched my competitors swim, and they looked so strong and skillful in the water. The events screamed by, one after the other. My knees shook as each event clicked closer to mine. The knots in my stomach twisted and coiled like a bag of ropes.
Then the one-hundred breaststroke (蛙泳) was announced.
Nerves choked my throat.
“Just swim your race. Don’t think about the other swimmers.” I repeated it over and over in my mind.
I bent forward on my block in line with the rest of the swimmers, waiting. My body tensed up like a spring. My heart pounded in my ears.
The buzzer (蜂鸣器) sounded. I sprang forward, diving into the water and kicking like a dolphin. Then my head broke free of the water. Just count strokes. I kept my eyes focused on the black line in front of me, ignoring the splashes of movement on either side. Pull. Breathe. Kick. I hit the end of the pool and then my first turn came. I took a deep a breath and turned over, pushing hard against the wall and bursting back the way I came.
