二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Dry Ice is a unique substance which has many uses. Essentially, dry ice is frozen CO2. The first report of what we now call dry ice came from the French chemist Charles Thilorier in 1834. In 1924, the Drylee Corporation of America named the solid form of CO2 as "Dry Ice", which is what it is popularly called today.

At normal atmospheric pressure, CO2changes directly from solid to gas. It skips the liquid phase(阶段)which makes regular ice wet. Frozen CO2is also much colder than regular ice. But regular ice freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, CO2 changes from gas to solid at -109.3 degrees Fahrenheit. This extremely cold temperature makes it very dangerous to handle with bare hands. It can cause frostbite in a very short period of time.

Dry ice has been used for a variety of purposes throughout the past century. Its primary use is to refrigerate food when electrical refrigeration isn't available. Through the process of sublimation (when CO2 changes from solid to gas), it can maintain cold food for a long time.

If you've ever been to a play and seen heavy fog on the ground, it is likely that you have seen dry ice in action. This effect can be achieved because CO2 is heavier than air, so evaporated (挥发的)CO2 will sink and accumulate on the ground.

Another interesting use for this substance is to bait(诱杀)insects like mosquitoes. These insects have sensors which guide them to CO2. They find the high concentration of CO2 in dry ice quite attractive.

Mars has long been a mystery for human beings. We have been looking for evidence of life on Mars. In the 1960s scientists guessed that the polar ice cap of Mars was made of frozen CO2. More recent observations have shown that while the topmost layer consists of frozen CO2, the most of it is probably regular frozen water.

1Frozen CO2 gets its name of "Dry Ice" mainly because

A. it is very easy to make it dry

B. we can't melt it and it doesn't get wet

C. it looks like ice at a low temperature

D. it is solid like ice at -109.3 degrees Fahrenheit

2The underlined word "frostbite" in the second paragraph probably means

A. the shakes caused by cold

B. damage caused by freezing

C. a fever caused by being cold

D. a sharp pain caused by bums

3According to the passage, dry ice can be used to

A. freeze most of food in the next century

B. increase the production of farming

C. make a vivid fog effect on stages

D. help to improve the environment

4What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A. Dry ice on Mars is near the polar.

B. Not much dry ice has been found on Mars.

C. The polar ice cap of Mars is unique.

D. No frozen CO, on Mars can be melt.

22、Dave MacPherson may have been the first paying guest at Disneyland when the theme park opened its gates 50 years ago, but he didn’t even have time for one ride. In a hurry to get back to campus for a college class, he instead visited a restroom after spending hours in line and left without as much as a souvenir.

Still, the honor of being the first paid admission came with a special perk: a lifetime pass for four to Disneyland and other Disney parks as they opened.

“I was the most popular guy at the college,” said MacPherson, now 72, a retired journalist living in Monticello, Utah, about 240 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.

He’s taken full advantage of it scores of times, especially when he lived in California. Usage dwindled after he moved to Kansas City, Mo., to work for newspapers and radio.

But being closer to California has made it more useful, and he last made the trip a year ago with his wife, Wanda. He receives a VIP renewal every January.

In 1955, MacPherson was watching televised coverage of the opening of Disneyland for the media and invited guests on July 17, 1955, a day before the park opened to the public.

“I said, ‘Boy, I sure would like to go out there,’” said MacPherson, who figured he might draw a prize for standing first in line.

He drove his Simplex motorbike to Anaheim, arriving shortly before I am to take his place in line an hour before anyone else showed up.

The crowd steadily grew overnight to about 6,000 people, and MacPherson made sure no one got in front of him. When the admission booth opened, a photographer for the Long Beach Press-Telegram captured him buying the first ticket.

Looking at the photo years later, he realized he had his own camera but didn’t use it.

“Why didn’t I shoot some pictures?” he wonders. “I even forgot to ask Walt (Disney) for his autograph. I must have been balmy or something after staying up all night.”

23、A smile is the key to a thousand doors, but deploying it in every situation without mastery of its use is dangerous, says a new social science study.

Scientists say it takes a great many muscles to smile; scientists at Queen’s University Belfast in a recent study found that subtle differences in the way in which a person smiled had not-so-subtle impacts on the opinions which the test participants had about the smiler. “Smiling at another person does not always lead to trust and cooperation,” said Dr. Stephanie Carpenter from the University of Michigan, a co-author of the study. “Subtle differences in a smile can definitely have a real impact on whether people trust each other and choose to cooperate. In fact, the way you smile in a good or bad situation can impact whether people trust you.

“Think about movie villains, for example in James Bond films,” said Dr. Magdalena Rychlowska from Queen’s University, who led the research published in Cognition and Emotion journal. “They often make happy smiles when something bad has happened or is about to happen. This context makes these otherwise happy and normal smiles feel threatening and unpleasant.” She adds, “The findings of this study show the power of subtle facial expressions and the positive consequences that an affiliation smile can have in difficult situations. It also highlights the importance of social context — a happy smile that could be read as a signal of trustworthiness in one setting can, but in another setting, it can be seen as the evidence of bad intentions.”

Mastery of the smile then, can be an excellent way of getting out of difficult social situations, while the lack thereof can be an excellent way of getting into one.

24、Many teens may feel anxious sometimes. It's the kind of nervousness that makes you bite your fingers before a big test. We spend more time online than we should. We feel good about ourselves or bad based on how many Likes and Followers we get on social media. Young people are developing a wrong view of life.

On the screen, we see what people want to show us. People usually only post photos where they are looking at their best. They meet friends around them and seem that they are having a great time. No one seems sad or lonely. In short, life is wonderful. But sooner or later, our young people compare their real life to it. They find that theirs doesn't seem as fun or exciting and grow worried that they may be missing out.

No wonder teachers are reporting more anxious students. It's reported that a lot more college students feel —too much anxiety. The percentage jumped from 50% in 2016 to 62% in 2021. Anxiety is now the most common mental-health problem in my country. It affects nearly one-third of teens and adults.

Certainly, we can't blame (责备)it on social media alone. We expect too much from our children and a lot of these expectations aren't reasonable. Their plans are packed with sports, clubs and homework. They don't have enough free time. We want our children to succeed, and we don't care how much it costs.

As parents, we must have more balance. On one hand, we push too hard, and on the other hand, we make life too easy for children. We shouldn't and can't promise our children that they will always be happy. We shouldn't try to protect them from the problems of everyday life. Let them solve the problems in person.

【1】What does the underlined word “theirs” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Young people's life.

B.Young people's friends.

C.Young people's photos.

D.Young people's parents.

A.The cost from parents.

B.The duty of social media.

C.The hobbies of young people.

D.The expectations from parents.

【3】What does the writer suggest parents do in the last paragraph?

A.Try to meet teens' expectations.

B.Help teens with their homework.

C.Give teens more free time to play sports.

D.Allow teens to solve their own problems in life.

【4】Which is the best title for the text?

A.What Causes Teens' Nervousness

B.How to Deal with Teens' Anxiety

C.How to Treat Social Media Suitably

D.What a View of Life Means to People
