21、Breathing in air pollution could change our brain. A new study shows that car fumes (尾气) can change how our brain is wired — how parts of the brain are connected (连接) with each other. Researchers from the University of British Columbia in Canada found that car fumes can change our brain’s connectivity in just two hours. Professor Chris Carlsten, was surprised at what he found. He said, “For many years, scientists thought the brain might be protected from the harmful effects of air pollution.” He added, “This study, which is the first of its kind in the world, supports a connection between air pollution and thinking.”

The traffic pollution study was on 25 adults. The researchers asked the adults to breathe in car fumes in a laboratory for two hours. The research team got images of their brains on a computer by X-rays. The images showed that networks in the brain that we use for thinking and remembering changed. There were fewer connections between the networks. Another professor said the research was worrying. She said, “It’s worrying to see traffic pollution disrupting (干扰) these networks.” The researchers said there needed to be more research to see the way car fumes change our brain. They also advised people to close car windows when in traffic. The brains of the 25 people returned to normal after they breathed clean air.

【1】Scientists used to think that ________.

A.car fumes were harmful to adults

B.clean air helped people think clearly

C.air pollution might do no damage to the brain

22、The insanely popular song ‘Gangnam Style’ from South Korean recording artist PSY has just become the most watched video on YouTube ever, garnering more than 808 million views on the popular media site.

The distinction was previously held by another pop heavyweight, Justin Bieber, whose song ‘Baby’ had a little more than 804 million views at press time. PSY made the announcement on his Twitter page earlier today.

Since its release, the song has defeated such other popular videos as Jennifer Lopez’s ‘On the Floor,’ Eminem's ‘Love the Way You Lie’ and LMFAO’s ‘Party Rock Anthem.’ And in September, 'Gangnam Style' also became the most liked video on YouTube, now with nearly 5.4 million thumbs up.

At the time of the announcement, the Guinness Book of World Records released a statement saying: “In years past it was unthinkable that something would be viewed a hundred million times, and now Gangnam Style has achieved more than twice this figure in just three months on YouTube. PSY, your certificate is waiting here at our office, come pick it up any time!”

Despite its massive popularity, the video shows no signs of slowing down, and it even has a shot at becoming the first video to get more than one billion views.

If it maintains its current rate of around six million new views per day, ‘Gangnam Style’ would be in line to break that record by the end of the year.

The YouTube honors are just the latest in a long list that shows just how popular the song has become. Since it was released in July, the song has seen a meteoric rise through the music industry.

It has found its way to the tops of music charts in more than 30 countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain and Canada, while providing material for thousands of parody(恶搞)videos.

It became a staple (主要部份) in the 2012 presidential elections with the now famous ‘Mitt Romney Style’ video and was even used by the North Korean government in propaganda films promoting their supreme leader.

Meanwhile, such influential figures as President Obama, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt have all made mention of the hit song.

【1】This passage mainly talks about a world famous________.

A. “Gangnam Style” has defeated Justin Bieber’s “Baby” on You Tube’s views.

B. “Gangnam Style” has been the favorite to at least 5.4 million people.

C. “Gangnam Style” has been the first to get more than 1 billion views.

D. “Gangnam Style” has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.

3What can we infer from this passage?

A. PSY will become one of the greatest musicians due to the popularity of “Gangnam Style”.

B. Obama won the presidential election partly because of the ‘Mitt Romney Style’ video.

C. Despite its massive popularity, the fever of “Gangnam Style” has decreased.

D. The influence of “Gangnam Style” has spread far and wide.

23、The Dead Sea might be the most famous saline body in the world, but it’s by no means the only one. Here, we uncover some other salt lakes around the world.

Dead Sea

The most famous of the lot, the Dead Sea—also known as the Salt Sea—is a natural place to start. It’s technically not a sea at all, but a land salt lake. Its waters are mainly drawn from the Jordan River, and the high salinity (盐度) means no life can survive here, so don’t expect any colorful fish. However, much amusement results from the sea’s buoyancy (浮力): Bring some reading material to the waters and lie back—nature will do the rest.

Lake Assal

Surrounded by black volcano rocks, Lake Assal takes the title of being the lowest point in Africa. Vast salt fields mark its edges; the lake has long been at the centre of the area’s salt trade, on which the region’s African locals still rely. Though the area might not be suitable to live in, the waters are rich in minerals and related to health benefits.

Great Salt Lake

The biggest salt lake in the western hemisphere, and the one that gave Salt Lake City its name, the Great Salt Lake finds its home in northern Utah. What makes the lake well-known is not only the lake’s blue and green waters and white-sand beaches, but also Great Salt Lake State Park and Antelope Island State Park, both offering super hiking and biking trails, and great long views.

Don Juan Pond

Don Juan Pond might not win any prizes for its beauty—at four inches deep, it’s little more than a pond, but it is worth visiting. Its salinity content of almost 40 percent   makes it   one   of   the   saltiest   bodies   of   water   on   Earth, meaning it doesn’t freeze even when Antarctic temperatures drop to -50℃. And with suggestions that water in a similar form could exist on Mars, there’s more than one reason for scientists to study this fascinating dry, cold environment.

【1】What can visitors probably do in Lake Assal?

A.Read books.

B.Have a hike.

C.Enjoy small fishes.

D.Take a bath in the lake.

【2】What is the Great Salt Lake famous for?

A.Its great parks.

B.Its scientific value.

C.Its highest salinity.

D.Its specific location.

【3】Which lake is valuable for space exploration?

A.Dead Sea.

B.Lake Assal.

C.Don Juan Pond.

D.Great Salt Lake.

24、   Researchers say the world has lost more than one fourth of its land-based insects over the past 30 years. The finding comes from a major study of insect populations worldwide. The researchers noted the loss of such insects suggests a more complex problem than earlier research has shown.

Ants, bees, butterflies and other land-based insects have been suffering population drops of about nine percent every 10 years or so. The number of insects on average has declined in the air, in the grass and soil, but not in trees or underground, the researchers found. Some estimates show that land-based insects will face a population drop of 24 percent in the next 30 years. The researchers did not find a link to climate change in the loss of insects. But they did note that widespread effects of growing cities and loss of underdeveloped areas to agriculture.

However, freshwater insects, such as dragonflies and mosquitoes, have been a different story. These insects were found to have experienced a population increase of about 1 percent every 10 years. Freshwater covers only 2.5 percent of the Earth’s surface, so the majority of insects live mainly on land. The researchers said clean-water policies established in recent years were responsible for the increase in freshwater insects.

“The decline across insect orders on land is very surprising,’’ said Nick Haddad,an expert on butterflies at Michigan State University. He was not involved in the study. Ongoing decline on land at this rate will be extremely damaging for ecological systems and for humans, Haddad told the Associated Press. He noted that insects are pollinators (传粉昆虫). They move pollen from part of the flower of a plant to another part. This causes the plant to produce fruit or seeds. Insects also help to break down dead plants and animals. Nick Haddad added that insects also serve as food to many animals, making them very important to the earth’s ecosystems.

Other scientists said the findings made sense. They would go on with the study with more accurate data.

【1】What is the finding of the study mainly about?

A.The disturbance of the earth’ s ecosystems.

B.The diversity of creatures in the world.

C.The complexity of studying land-based insects.

D.The change in the number of insects worldwide.

【2】What was the main cause of the insects’ situation according to the author?

A.Human activity.

B.Climate change.

C.A lack of freshwater.

D.Frequent natural disasters.

【3】Why does the author say freshwater insects have been a different story?

A.They reproduce very quickly.

B.Their habitat has been protected.

C.Their population is in the minority.

D.They can live both on land and in water.

【4】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The relationship between insects and plants.

B.The importance of insects to the ecosystems.

C.The significance of further studying insects.

D.Human’s influence on the decline of wildlife.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Jenny was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Jenny was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team, as well. She even won a soccer championship with her teammates last year. But this particular swimming competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn’t want to let her teammates down.

When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Jenny was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.

She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though she got butterflies in her stomach. Jenny’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s important to keep your strength up.”

“I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Jenny replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.

Jenny’s mom sensed her daughter’s worry and gave her a comforting pat on the back. “You’ll be great, dear. Just do your best. That’s all that matters.”

Jenny felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother’s kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had disappeared. She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition.
