二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Procrastination (拖延症) gets people into trouble--leaving tasks until the very last moment is a Pandora’ s box of anxiety, uncertainty, and panic, but it’s still a popular way of planning our time. The healthier opposite would be to get tasks done as soon as possible, right? Wrong. It’s called precrastination (提前症) and it can be just as unhealthy.

Precrastination is not an uncommon phenomenon, driven by the desire to check things off one’s to-do list, in order not to keep in mind those tasks which fill up headspace and become a source of stress. While this tendency might seem positive, it often leads to similar negative results as procrastination. In a 2014 study, college students were asked to carry a bucket (桶) to a finish line in the easiest way possible. They had two choices-- carry the bucket placed halfway down the path, or carry the bucket that was close to the finish line. To the researchers’ surprise, most of the participants chose the bucket closest to them and carried it for a longer time, other than the one closest to the finish line to save themselves some effort.

Those college students chose to get started on a task earlier, even if it meant spending more energy in the longer term. And that’s the main problem with precrastination--it enables people to pay attention to urgent, easy-to-do tasks and get them out of the way quickly. But in doing so, people often leave important, more time-and-energy-consuming tasks for later, which they actually should have been saving their efforts for. Another shortcoming to precrastinating is the frenzy (疯狂) that accompanies the satisfaction of getting tasks done early. This hurried frenzy can replace careful planning and thought, ending in the rushed completion of a task often with mistakes.

Compared to procrastinators’ low efficiency, hyper-diligence (过度勤奋) is commonly seen in precrastinators. However, the only practice that can actually help people better organize their tasks and lives is careful, strategic planning. Meanwhile, they should get better at saying no, and above all, keep in mind that quality is better than quantity.

22、   On average, Americans spend about 10 hours a day in front of a computer or other electronic devices and less than 30 minutes a day outdoors. That is a claim made by David Strayer, a professor of psychology at the University of Utah. In his 2017 TED Talk , Strayer explained that all this time spent with technology is making our brains tired.

Using an electronic device to answer emails, listen to the news and look at Facebook puts a lot of pressure on the front of the brain, which, Strayer explains, is important for critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making.

So it is important to give the brain a rest. And being in nature, Strayer claims , helps get a tired brain away from too much technology. More than 15,000 campers from around the world attended an international camping festival in September. That is when friends and family take time off and escape to nature for several days. They take walks, climb, explore, swim, sleep, eat and play. Camping may be just what a tired brain needs.

Take Carl for example. He lives in West Virginia and enjoys camping. He says that staying outdoors makes him feel at ease. It also prepares him for the work he must do. Kate Somers is another example who also lives in West Virginia. She says she enjoys camping with her husband and two children. She calls it a “regenerative” experience.

At the University of Utah, David Strayer has studied both short-term and long-term exposure to nature. He found that spending short amounts of time in nature without technology does calm the brain and helps it to remember better. However, he found it is the long-term contact with nature that does the most good. He and his research team found spending three days in nature without any technology is enough time for the brain to fully relax and reset itself.

1What is David Strayer’s opinion?

A. Americans dislike outdoor activities.

B. Electronic equipment should be quitted.

C. New technologies are a double-edged sword.

D. Electronic equipment brings great convenience.

3What does the underlined word “regenerative” mean?

C. Relevant. D. Reborn

4Which is the proper title for the passage?

A. How to Use New Technologies. B. Good Rest Develops Good Memory.

C. Being in Nature Is Good for the Brain. D. Electronic Equipment Harms the Brain.

23、A new study has found that the number of young Americans who watch online videos each day has more than doubled in the past four years. The findings were based on a survey of about 1, 700 young people aged 8 to 18.

Fifty-six percent of 8- to 12-year-olds taking part in the survey said they watched online videos each day. That rate(比率)jumped to 69 percent for 13- to 18-year-olds. A 2015 survey by Common Sense Media found the rate was 24 percent for 8- to 12-year-olds and 34 percent for 13- to 18-year-olds.

The survey found that overall screen time for young Americans did not change much over the past four years. On average, preteens spent just under five hours of screen time on devices (设备)each day. Teens had about seven and a half hours of screen time. The numbers did not include time young people spent doing homework, reading books or listening to music.

The findings suggest a continuing change by young people to move away from traditional television to streaming video services on their phones and other personal devices.

In answer to the survey, YouTube said the company is rethinking the way it deals with children and families. A spokesman for YouTube, Farshad Shadloo, repeated the company’s terms of use on age: "YouTube is not a site for people under 13. The company said YouTube Kids and its restriction tools are designed to limit (限制)site usage for preteens. But experts say it is easy for many children to get to the videos they want to watch, whether on YouTube or another streaming service.

Sarah Domoff is a professor at Central Michigan University who studies the effects of technology on youth and families. She told the AP that parents often do not have the time or skills to limit what their children are watching effectively.

【1】What are the rates in paragraph 2 about?

A.Ages of different kids.

B.Screen time kids spend.

C.Kids taking part in the survey.

D.Kids watching online videos.

【2】What do we know about the overall screen time for young Americans?

A.It has increased fast.

B.It has dropped sharply.

C.It remains almost the same.

D.It continues to change quickly.

【3】How do experts feel about YouTube' s limiting plans for kids?

A.Useless.

B.Wise.

24、   Richard Branson has had great global success. He is best known as the founder of Virgin Group, which consists of more than 400 companies.

So what, I asked, is his most important secret to success? His answer was simple: Look for the best in other people. Throughout his life he's never thought ill of other people. He looks for the best and praises them. Branson at time seems almost not human. He's too good at what he does. No, great, Nearly perfect. When he starts something, he is very likely to succeed. He has fallen out with others though, like anyone else. He is only human. He told me, "Life is short and the world is much smaller than one realizes. You are going to come across people time and time again in the most surprising places. As a leader it's even more important to be out there praising and encouraging people. If you do fall out with somebody in life, even if you think it was their mistake, give them a call. Befriend them. Go out to lunch with them."

The greatest leaders in the world have taught forgiveness. Perhaps the most extreme example is Nelson Mandela, who invited his former prison guard to his inauguration(就职典礼)and even had lunch with a man who in the past wanted him to be sentenced to death.

Life is too short. We are humans and sometimes we make mistakes and anger people. What defines us is not those who are able to avoid confrontation(对抗), but those who are able to deal with it. The human body is able to self-heal(自愈)when we are cut. In that same manner, we must heal our past relationships.

Branson wins respect from those around him. A natural-born leader, he is always deep in thought and hungry for more; always one step ahead. And it was Richard Branson who taught me about forgiveness.

1Richard Branson's success lies in his .

A.live in peace with others B.be respected by our enemies

C.make a difference to others D.make as few mistakes as possible

4What would be the best title for the text?

A.The key to success B.What is forgiveness?

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

For many well-educated travelers, buying a copy of Lonely Planet is the first task before taking a vacation abroad. Founded in 1973, Lonely Planet is the biggest guidebook series in many countries. It’s published in 11 languages including Chinese.

But when the BBC confirmed on March 19 that it had sold the entire Lonely Planet series to a US billionaire at a significant deficit(赤字), many commented that the deal sang the swan song for the printed guidebook.

The rise of the Internet and the prevalence of smartphones have become a burden on the print media. Why would travelers bring a heavy guidebook when they can download the apps to their smartphone in an instant? Furthermore, alternative and free travel content is readily available on the Internet, from Wikivoyage to TripAdvisor which provide excellent guidance on your trips.

But the Internet is not the only reason that guidebooks are in decline. It is also widely accepted that the physical guidebook has such complete content that can kill any sense of personal exploration. With the guide books, all those backpacker feet ended up following routine trade routes, and in those routes was little room for initiative.

It’s also pointed out that the guidebook is not exactly good for tourism. Often the shops and restaurants that thrived on a recommendation in the guidebook relaxed and discovered that it didn’t matter: the legions of eager travelers keep on coming anyway.  They gradually become uncompetitive.

And yet, despite the rise of new media, it’s believed there is still a place for printed guidebooks, at least for the time being as books still offer readers the kind of feeling that virtual tools can’t provide, more of a compelling, touchable interaction.
