21、October 16 is World Food Day, which started in 1981. It is used to remind people not to waste food and to ask people to fight hunger (饥饿).
A large number of people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat. Food shortage is a big problem in the world. Right now, there are nearly 1,000 million hungry people in the world according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of hunger each year.
There are several reasons why there are food shortages. First, there have been more droughts (干旱) and floods recently. Also, a growing population makes feeding everyone more difficult.
Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. On average (平均), a person throws away 50 kilos of food every year in Netherlands (荷兰). According to FAO, more than 1/3 of all food produced in the world goes to waste each year. The amount (数量) of food wasted in Europe in 2016 can feed 200 million people, and the food lost or wasted in Latin America in 2013 can feed 300 million.
So think twice next time you want to throw away food. If you try to avoid wasting food, you can save some food and help hungry children. Only order as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can’t finish all you order, take the rest home. Don’t be too picky (挑剔的) about food so that you don’t leave any on your plate. Check what food you have at home. Don’t buy or cook too much.

22、People go to work in different ways. Some people go to work on foot because they live near their workplaces. Today more people have private(私人的) cars, so they can go to work in their cars. In the south of China, many people even go to work by boat because water is around their houses. 23、How many people have I met who have told me about the book they have been planning to write but have never yet found the time? Far too many.
This is life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal (排演) and, unhappily, we do miss so many of its best moments.
We take jobs to stay alive and provide homes for our families, always making ourselves believe that this style of life is only a temporary (暂时的) state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do. Then, at 60 or 65, we are suddenly presented with a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and realize that all those years waiting for Real Life to come along were in fact real life.
In America they have a saying much laughed at by the English “Have a nice day”. They speak slowly and seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars. I think it is a wonderful phrase, reminding us, in effect, to enjoy the moment: to value this very day.
How often do we say to ourselves, “I’ll take up horse-riding (or golf, or sailing) as soon as I get a higher position”, only to do none of those things when I do get the higher position.
When I first became a reporter, I knew a man who gave up a very well-paid respectable job at the Daily Telegraph to go and work for a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was surprised by what appeared to me to be his completely abnormal (反常的) mental state. How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in central London for a small local area? I wanted to know.
Now I am a little older and possibly wiser. I see the sense in it. In Fleet Street the man was under continual pressure. He lived in an unattractive London suburb and he spent much of his life sitting on Southern Region trains.
