Making shadows dance
Shadow puppetry started during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC—AD 24).
It used to be popular in the countryside because it was simple and cheap. It’s a mix of acting, singing and music. It tells us about folklore(民间传说)and historical stories, passing on customs and culture.
The puppets are usually made from leather(皮)or paper. It is not easy to make them. In Hua county, Shaanxi— the birthplace of shadow puppetry—puppet-makers have to follow 24 steps to make a puppet. They include washing the leather, carving(雕刻)and painting.
Each puppet usually has 11 parts, such as its head, legs and arms. There are between 12 and 24 joints(关节)that hold these parts together. With the help of at least three wooden sticks, the puppets can move easily.
Master’s story
Wang Haiyan’s father is a master(大师)of shadow puppetry from Hua county. When she was a kid, she helped her father make puppets. “They were my favorite toys.” Wang said.
At around 13, she started to learn to make puppets and perform with them from her father. Now the 43-year-old is a master. She has her own studio(工作室)to pass on the art.
Hua county’s puppets are difficult to make. A special carving skill(雕刻技巧)is used to make them. “You have to hold the knife still in your right hand and move only the leather in your left hand.” Wang said.
Wang once used a brick(砖块)to strengthen her left hand during practice. It took her three years to finally master the skill.
These days, Wang came up with creative ways to make the folk art more popular. She works with companies that borrow elements(元素)of shadow puppetry for their own products.
“From fashion and makeup products to souvenirs, anything is possible.” Wang said.
In 2016, Wang made shadow puppets based on the cartoon series Huyao Xiaohongniang(《狐妖小红娘》)and put on a live streaming(直播的)puppet performance. She used unique colors and puppetry skills to make the performances more interesting.
She teaches shadow puppetry classes in school as well. “I hope more young people can learn about the art!” she said.

The world’s glaciers are melting(融化)quickly. Scientists, from Nature studied 20 years of satellite data of the world’s 220,000 mountain glaciers, and found that since 2015, glaciers have last 298 billion metric tons of ice and snow per year. That is 31% more than 15 years ago, and enough ice melt to put Switzerland under 7.2 meter of water each year.
Scientist say the melting is caused by climate(气候)change. Almost all of the world’s glaciers are melting. Half of the world’s glacier melts in the United States and Canada. Some miller glaciers are totally lost. The melting “mirrors” the worldwide increase in temperature and is from the burning of coal, oil and gas.

But the biggest problem to the world is rising sea levels, Glaciers are responsible for 21% of sea level rise. Mark Serreze, director of the American National Snow and Ice Data Center(NSIDC)in Colorado, thinks that sea level rise is going to be a bigger and bigger problem, as we move through the 21st century.

In order to be accepted by the Academy, an artist had to be very talented. Artists also had to paint exactly the way the Academy wanted them to. A brave group of painters challenged (挑战) these ideas and changed art f【2】.
Each year, the Academy had an exhibition of the art they had decided was the best. In 1864, a group of artists became a【3】 because they didn’t give into their own show.
