21、With its tall buildings and crowded streets, Hong Kong is one of the last places you would expect to find a wild animal. But green sea turtles have become regular visitors to beaches found in more peaceful parts of the metropolis.

Over the last month, people living in Hong Kong and Hainan Province have been lucky enough to see the giant turtles lay their eggs on the beaches at night. Male turtles spend their entire lives in the sea. But every two to six years, the females swim thousands of miles from their feeding grounds to lay eggs in their own birthplaces

Unluckily, few of the baby turtles survive with only one in 1,000 living into adulthood. If they manage to grow big, which takes 20 to 30 years, they can live for more than a century.

Man is the main reason why turtles are dying out. The creatures’ habitats are destroyed by fishing and pollution, while the turtles themselves are killed for food and leather.

“Sea turtle eggs and meat saved us during Japan's occupation of Hong Kong in World War II,”

said 65-year-old resident Chan Kam-wan. But the days of eating turtle eggs have long since passed. Hong Kong banned the eating and sale of them in 1976, hoping to help save the endangered creatures.

In recent years, the government has closed beaches between June and October so the turtles can lay eggs in peace. Scientists also try and keep a count of the number of turtles, even following them using satellites. Through tracking the turtles, they hope to learn new ways of protecting them.

Officials in Hong Kong have recently finished a study on sea life in the area. They are considering setting up a sea park to protect the sea turtles from water pollution and illegal fishing.

1We can learn from the passage EXCEPT_________.

A. Most of the baby turtles die before growing up

B. It is difficult to find wild animals in Hong Kong

C. Turtles can live for more than one hundred years

D. You can find some male turtles on the beaches if lucky enough

2A large number of turtles were killed for food by Hong Kong residents in

A. 1976   B. 1978

C. 1944   D. 1898

3What can we conclude from the passage?

A. The Problems that the turtles were facing have been settled.

B. The government has built walls on the beaches to protect turtles.

C. The government will plant many trees on the beaches to set up a park.

D. The government is using some advanced equipment to protect turtles

4Where may you read this passage?

22、Look at the keyboard of any standard typewriter or computer. “Q,”“W,”“E,”“R,”“T” and “Y” are the first six letters. Who decided on this arrangement of the letters? And why?

People tried for centuries to invent the typewriter. In 1714 in England, Henry Mill applied for a patent (专利) for a machine called An Artificial Machine or Method for the Impressing or Transcribing of Letters Singly or Progressively One After Another. That machine probably didn’t sell because no one could remember its name.

The first practical typewriter was patented in the United States in 1868 by Christopher Latham Sholes. His machine was known as the typewriter. It had a keyboard on which the letters were arranged in alphabetical order (按字母顺序).

But on the first model, his “ABC” key arrangement caused the keys to jam (拥堵) when the typist worked quickly. To solve the problem, he just kept the typist from typing too fast. Sholes asked his brother-in-law to rearrange the keyboard so that the letters used often were not so close together and the type bars (打字杆) would come from opposite directions. Thus they would not hit together and jam the machine. The new arrangement was QWERTY arrangement that typists use today. Of course, Sholes claimed that the new arrangement was scientific and would add speed and efficiency. But the only efficiency it added was to slow the typist down, since almost any word in the English language required the typist’s fingers to cover more distance on the keyboard.

The advantage of the typewriter outweighed (超过) the disadvantages of the typewriter keyboard, however. Typists memorized the crazy letter arrangement, and the typewriter became a huge success. By the time typists had memorized the new arrangement of letters and built up their speed, typewriter technology had improved, and the keys didn’t stick as badly as they had at first.

【1】Who was the inventor of the first practical typewriter?

A.Henry Mill.

B.Sholes’ brother-in-law.

C.Christopher Latham Sholes.

B.Perhaps the name of the machine was too long.

C.It was difficult for people to use it.

D.It hadn’t been patented by its inventor.

【3】Why did Sholes decide on the QWERTY arrangement of the keyboard?

A.To solve the problem of the keys jamming.

B.To compete with the “ABC” key arrangement.

C.To arrange the letters in alphabetical order.

D.To cause the keys to jam when the typist worked quickly.

【4】What can be inferred from the QWERTY arrangement of the keyboard?

A.It was easy for typists to memorize.

B.It could make the type bars move faster.

C.It kept the typist from typing too fast.

D.It could let the typist cover less distance on the keyboard.

23、   Nobody is sure where and when the expression “apple-pie order” began. Some say that Scottish and English writers used the expression a long time ago. Others say it first was used in the northeastern American states known as New England. The housewives of New England cut their apples in even slices. Then they filled pie pans with them in an organized way, row () upon row. As one writer said, the women of New England loved to have everything in its place. This perhaps explains why it generally is believed that the expression “apple-pie order” began in New England.

Another old expression, “apple of discord”, comes from ancient mythology (神话), however. The myth says that all the gods and goddesses were sitting around the table to celebrate the marriage of Thetis and Peleus. One of the goddesses—Discord—was a troublemaker. She threw a golden apple on the table to be given as a prize to the most beautiful goddess.

At one time, the tomato was called a love apple. That was a mistake. This is how the mistake happened: In the sixteenth century, Spain bought the tomato from South America after Spanish explorers had landed there. Spain then sold the tomato to Morocco. Italian traders carried it on to Italy. The Italian name for the tomato was “pomo di Moro”—apple of the Moors. When French growers brought it in from Italy, they thought “di Moro” meant “d’amour”—the French word for love. And so “pomo di Moro” became the apple of love.

People believe many things about the apple. One belief is that it has great power of keeping people healthy. A very common expression is “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”.

Another belief is based on fact. The expression is “one rotten apple spoils the barrel”. When an apple begins to go bad, it ruins all the other apples around it in the container. The expression has come to mean that one bad person in a group can cause everyone to behave badly.
