21、A 25-mile strip of plants, farms and villages is hit by one of the largest wildfires in decades, ruining the Italian tourist destination. About 1, 000 residents and tourists have been evacuated from areas of western Sardinia that were destroyed by wildfires over the weekend, with forests, grasslands and villages on the Italian island covered in flames.
“It is a disaster without examples,” said the region’s governor, Christian Solinas, appealing a state of emergency on Sunday. No deaths or injuries have been reported, the Italian authorities said. But the fires were still powerful on Monday, when four firefighting planes from France and Greece joined the Italian firefighters’ air fleet to help control the big fire.
Since early Saturday, when the wildfires started near a forest by the village of Bonacardo, at least 50, 000 acres of land have gone up in flames. On Sunday night, Prime Minister Mario Draghi of Italy expressed his “full unity” with the people affected by the fires and offered support for firefighters working around the clock. Images recorded by Italian firefighters showed a thick layer of smoke swallowing residential buildings, warehouses and barns, and flames burning high just behind beach-side villas in the town of Porto Alabe, a popular tourist site, over 25 miles north of where the fires originated.
Flames ran through hectares (公顷) of oak forests that are native to the region. A thousand-year-old olive tree that was the symbol of the hilltop village of Cuglieri was destroyed by the fire. “This morning, the trunk was still burning,” Maria Giovanna Campus, a retired local archaeologist wrote on Facebook last Sunday. “We had proudly signaled its presence to tourists, but we ended up neglecting it and leaving it to the flames” she said, adding “cleaning up the area around it would have been enough to protect it and preserve it.”
The cause of the fires was not yet clear. But experts said that to prevent wildfires, forests and grasslands needed to be kept clean and barrier zones created. In the affected areas of Sardinia and elsewhere in Italy, abandoned lands are often not properly maintained, which can help the fire spread, they said.
【1】What do we know about the wildfires in Italy?

22、For centuries, fishers in Narrangansett have fished in the waters of the northwestern Atlantic for herrings (鲱鱼). But as climate change warms the world’s seas, the herrings are disappearing at the southern end of their range and turning up more often at its northern edges. A study shows that concentrations of marine (海洋的) species populations have been shifting away from the equator (赤道) and toward the poles during the course of the past century. These movements could wreak havoc on food webs and endanger the livelihoods (生计) of fishers.
The tropical (热带的) water at the equator is well-known for having the richest diversity of marine life on Earth. The number of marine species naturally decreases gradually as you head towards the poles. Ecologists have assumed this global pattern has remained stable over recent centuries until now. Our recent study found the ocean around the equator has already become too hot for many species to survive, and that global warming is responsible. And as species flee to cooler water towards the poles, it’s likely to have deep impacts on marine ecosystems.
Losing species in tropical ecosystems means ecological adaptation to environmental changes is reduced, potentially damage ecosystem persistence. In subtropical ecosystems, species richness is increasing. This means there’ll be species invaders, and new competitive relationships. This could result in ecosystem collapse in which species go extinct and ecosystem services (such as food supplies) are permanently changed.
One way is to reduce our emissions aggressively. Other opportunities could also help safeguard biodiversity and hopefully minimize the worst impacts of it shifting away from the equator. Designing climate-smart reserves could further protect biodiversity from future changes. For example, reserves for marine life could be placed where the climate will be stable over the foreseeable future. We should take action without delay.
【1】What does the underlined phrase “wreak havoc on” probably mean in Paragraph 1?

【3】What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.The increase of species in subtropical ecosystem.
B.The decline of ecological changes in the ocean.
C.The temporary changes in ecosystem services.

C.To predict the future of the marine ecosystem.
D.To explain the reasons for global warming.
23、When I first began running in high school on the track team, it made sense to carefully clock every mile and push myself to race for personal bests. But as I transitioned from running for sport to running for amusement as an adult, I found that tracking my workouts often just ended with frustration. And it wasn’t until my watch battery died several years ago that I first experienced the sense of calm that comes with running for the pure joy of it. I never replaced the watch battery, and experts say that might not be a bad thing for my fitness goals.
This is the idea of unplugged(不插电的) running, which is gaining steam in the fitness community. And recent research has shown that getting rid of your running watch, especially if it’s a smartwatch or fitness tracker, could actually improve your workout.
“People used to have an interest in their sport and got enjoyment out of the sport, but now that’s switching to the data,” said Eoin Whelan, a senior lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway. “They will compare themselves to people who are better than them, who are running faster or running longer. And ultimately we know that makes them feel bad.”
Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart watches or fitness trackers are more likely to skip their workout if the batteries on their tracking device are dead.
In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is beneficial for more than just the casual jogger. Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch. He stopped tracking his pace years ago and only trains based on his effort and his overall running time: Getting rid of the pace tracking on his watch, as well as switching off other technology while he runs, has helped him get more “in tune” with his body.
“If you have too much information being fed to you in real time, it can kind of get in your head,” Hofbauer said. “For me, the simpler, the better.”
【1】What happened to the author when his running watch didn’t work?
A.He lost the desire to keep running every day.
B.He experienced running as a really fun activity.
C.He was at a loss how to replace the watch battery.
D.He had great difficulty achieving his fitness goals.
【2】What does Eoin Whelan think of running watches?
A.They can lead to hurtful comparisons.
B.The way people use them is different.
C.The data provided by them is not correct.
D.They can help enrich the wearers’ social life.
【3】Why does the author mention Trevor Hofbauer in paragraph 5?
A.To show the popularity of running watch-free.
B.To encourage people to become professional runners.
C.To prove the positive effects of running watch-free.
D.To present professionals’ views on running watch-free.
【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.It is time to take off your running watch
B.The running watch is gaining more popularity
C.We should enjoy a break without a running watch
D.A running watch can slow down your running speed
24、You are a new manager at the American branch of your German firm in Chicago. With a few minutes to spare between meetings, you go to get a quick cup of coffee.
“Hey, David, how are you?” one of the senior partners at the firm asks you.
“Good, thank you, Dr. Greer,” you reply. You’ve really been wanting to make a connection with the senior leadership at the firm, and this seems like a great opportunity. But as you start to think of something to say, your American colleague breaks in to steal your spotlight.
“So Arnold”, your colleague says to your boss, in such a casual manner that it makes your German soul cringe(畏缩), “So what’s your Super bowl prediction? I mean, you’re a Niners fan, right?” The conversation moves on, and you walk silently back to your desk with your coffee. You know how important small talk is in the U. S. , and you feel jealous of people who can do it well.
There’s nothing small about the role that small talk plays in American professional culture. People from other countries are often surprised at how important small talk is in the U. S. and how naturally and comfortably people seem to do it—with peers, men, women, and even with superiors. You can be the most technically skilled worker in the world, but your ability to progress in your job in the United States is highly dependent on your ability to build and maintain positive relationships with people at work. And guess what skill is critical for building and maintaining these relationships? Small talk.
What can you do if you are from another culture and want to learn to use small talk in the U. S. to build relationships and establish trust? Work hard to hone(磨练)your own version of American-style small talk. Watch how others do it. You don’t have to mimic what they do; in fact, that would likely backfire because people would see you as inauthentic. But if you can develop your own personal version, that can go a long way toward making you feel comfortable.
