二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、I wish I’d been more confident in my own abilities, especially when I was at school.

I was a shy child and struggled a bit when talking to other people. On the whole, my parents were very supportive, always encouraging me and trying to help me relax in social situations, but I was always terribly self-conscious. I wish I hadn’t been so worried about what everybody thought of me. I know now that if you are extremely shy , then it’s hard work to have a conversation with you. Now I try to think about the other person I’m talking to and put them at ease in my company .However, at school, I found it especially difficult in my peer group. I wasn’t competitive, but I was aware of my appearance and I always compared myself to other people, usually coming to the conclusion that I wasn’t as clever or as popular or as cool as they were. I wanted to be popular. I know now that the kids who are considered the coolest at school aren’t necessarily the most popular or successful when they grow up.

I realize now that everything changes during your teen years — physically, mentally, socially and emotionally — and I just had a harder time than most. I wish I hadn’t let it stop me from doing things, though. I wish I’d taken a gap year or at least traveled more when I left school. But to tell the truth, I didn’t have the courage to go off alone before going to college. I could have gone to Europe and America with a friend as I’d saved up enough money, but in the end I just didn’t want to do it. My parents really wanted me to try a gap year. They said it would be a great experience before college. I think they were right, and now I won’t have another opportunity to do that for a long time.

27、A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man--the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort.

This attitude toward manual (体力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪华地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the near- by bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.

A. people tend to have a high opinion of the self--made man

D. it is easy to prepare a meal with canned food

【3】The expression "wait on table" in the second paragraph means

【4Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?

B. American Attitude toward Manual Labor

C. Characteristics of American Culture

D. The Development of Manual Labor

28、I have learned a great many things from playing football. And it has changed my entire attitude towards life.

In my freshman year at high school, I was shy, had low self-confidence and turned away from seemingly impossible challenges. On the first day of freshman practice, the team warmed up with a game of touch football. However, during the game, I didn't run as hard as I could, nor did I try to escape from my defender and get open. The fact of the matter was that I really didn't want to be the one at fault if I dropped the ball and the play didn't succeed. I didn't want to take the responsibility of helping the team because I was too afraid of making a mistake. That aspect of my character led the first year of my high school life. I avoided asking questions in class, afraid they might be considered too stupid by my classmates.

During my second-year season, my position at backup guard led me to play in the games since another backup guard on my team was seriously injured. From then on, I made mistakes sometimes and was blamed by my coaches indeed. However, those criticisms didn't make my teammates look down upon me, but they helped me a lot. At times I made great plays, for which I was congratulated. Now, I feel like a changed person.

Over the years, playing football has taught me what it takes to succeed. From months of tough practices, I have learned to work hard. From my coaches and teammates, I have learned to work well with others in a group. But most importantly, I have gained self-confidence. I realize that it is necessary to risk failure in order to gain success. Now, I welcome the challenge.

【1】What sort of boy was the author in his early years of high school?

A.Kind.

B.Brave.

C.Lonely.

D.Fearful.

【2】What can we learn about the teammates?

A.They are friendly and warm-hearted.

B.They were seriously injured during the games.

C.They are unsatisfied with the team's performance.

D.They regarded the author as the most important player.

【3】What was the most important thing the author learned from playing football?

A.Practice makes perfect.

B.You get what you pay off.

C.Many hands make light work.

D.Self-confidence is the key to success.

【4】What's the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.To recall his school days.

B.To show his love for football.

C.To share his growth experience.

D.To thank his coaches and teammates.

29、Many of us love July because it’s the month when nature’s berries and stone fruits are in abundance. These colourful and sweet jewels form British Columbia’s fields are little powerhouses of nutritional protection.

Of the common berries, strawberries are highest in vitamin C, although, because of their seeds, raspberries contain a little more protein (蛋白质), iron and zinc (not that fruits have much protein). Blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants (抗氧化物质). The yellow and orange stone fruits such as peaches are high in the carotenoids we turn into vitamin A and which are antioxidants. As for cherries (樱桃), they are so delicious who cares? However, they are rich in vitamin C.

When combined with berries of slices of other fruits, frozen bananas make an excellent base for thick, cooling fruit shakes and low fat “ice cream”. For this purpose, select ripe bananas for freezing as they are much sweeter. Remove the skin and place them in plastic bags or containers and freeze. If you like, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on the bananas will prevent them turning brown. Frozen bananas will last several weeks, depending on their ripeness and the temperature of the freezer.

If you have a juicer, you can simply feed in frozen bananas and some berries or sliced fruit. Out comes a “soft-serve” creamy dessert, to be eaten right away. This makes a fun activity for a children’s party; they love feeding the fruit and frozen bananas into the top of the machine and watching the ice cream come out below.

1What does the author seem to like about cherries?

A. They have a pleasant taste.   B. They are high in vitamin A.

C. They contain protein.   D. They are rich in antioxidants.

2Why is fresh lemon juice used in freezing bananas?

A. To make them smell better.   B. To improve their nutrition.

C. To speed up their ripening.   D. To keep their colour.

3What is “a juicer” in the last paragraph?

A. A dessert.   B. A machine.

C. A container.   D. A drink.

4From which is the text probably taken?

A. A biology textbook.   B. A research paper.

C. A health magazine.   D. A travel brochure.
