26、 There aren't many happy conservation stories these days. But in the case of the California condor(秀鹫), it's good news.
In 1982, when just 22 California condors were left in the world, scientists started an official rescue program: they caught the remaining population to breed the birds.【1】
Chris Parish, a partner in the official rescue program, said, "We have put a lot of efforts into this-lot of dollars and a lot of years of research behind the present success. We are closer to recovery.【2】
Researchers began studying the birds in the 1940s. By the 1980s, experts began the slow process of catching, breeding rand reintroducing the birds back into the wild. The population then grew to more than 500.【3】Experts found that the leading cause was lead poisoning. The birds often eat dead animals shot and left behind by hunters, and they sometimes eat lead ammunition(弹药) while eating the meat. It was this research that made the California government order that hunters shouldn't use lead ammunition when shooting any wildlife anywhere in the state.
Aside from government bans, education in the hunting community has been also pushed for. 【4】Hunters there have been encouraged to either use non-lead ammunition or to pull the remains of shot animals away. For Parish, programs like that must be developed.
【5】"It's not the bird that's worth it.” Parish said, "It's successfully showing the problem and solutions and acting on those solutions. That's what we're going to need. We're going to need to have confidence in society that we can do it again. The California condor is far from the last species that will need to be saved.”
A.The population was small.
B.But the birds remained in danger of dying out.
C.Parish pointed to a program in Northern Arizona.
D.Our final goal is a self-sustaining population.
E.They are now found mainly in California, Arizona and southern Utah.
F.The night for the California condor is bigger than just the one species.
G.Decades later, a breakthrough was made: 1,000 chicks hatched.
27、Children today seem to be less and less interested in learning about the past. 【1】 Try out any of these tips on how to get your kids involved and excited about learning more about your family history.
Tell stories
Telling stories is a good way to attract children’s attention. However, not all stories are exciting. 【2】
Describe about the scenery, the people and their appearances, and include funny details. Use words they can understand. Make these stories a part of everyday life. 【3】 Just share them at bedtime, on drives and at dinner.
Family outings
Family outings will help them set the scene in their minds. Take them to your childhood home and show them the tree that you carved your name in. Take them to your grandpa’s favorite ice cream store and get ice cream. 【4】
Be sure to attend your family’s cultural festival. With a little help from the Internet, you can find lots of fun things to do. These activities can even be included in family gatherings.
Visit and talk with elder relatives
【5】 Some interesting topics can be included, like their favorite childhood toys, the home where they lived as children, and the biggest event of their childhood. If possible, write down the stories in a notebook so that they could be kept well and passed down to the next generations.
A.They don’t need to be made into a big problem.
B.Doing the things they love can help you feel closer to them.
C.Encourage children to ask their relatives about their past lives.
D.So it is smart to tell them in a way that interests young people.
E.Visit the cities, states, and countries where your family once lived.
F.Spending more time helping them understand their family history is important.
G.However, if you make it fun for them, they’re more likely to join in the activity.
28、The Boy Made It! Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV.He had often watched Grylls’ survival show ----Man vs.Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life.In each episode(一期节目) of Man vs.Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.

Ordinary things on an ordinary night. I wander into the kids’ room. My son, Taylor, 4 years old, sleeps, and I pull the covers around him and kiss his forehead. I walk downstairs to check the hearth (壁炉). The fire is almost out. A thin veil of smoke hangs in the air. I climb upstairs and fall back into bed, but an hour later, panic wakes me. I stand in the kids’ room. The house seems smokier than it did before, but how can that be when the fire burned out hours ago? I crack a window, return to bed, and fall into a dead sleep.
Suddenly, I hear screams. It’s my husband, Troy. “Mary! Get out of the house!”
Hearing the panic in his voice, I sit upright. I run to the bedroom door and swing it open, and I am blown back, knocked to the floor. Searing (灼人的) heat and black smoke surround me, burning my skin. I gasp for breath and crawl across the floor, shielding my mouth and nose.
Without knowing how, I have Taylor in my arms and am at his bedroom window. When I open it, ashes and smoke blow through as the heat is pulled toward us. There’s fire behind me, a 9-meter drop to concrete (混凝土) below.
Troy shouts from another window, “Hold on! I’m coming—I’m gonna jump!” Then the sickening sound of bones against concrete. I scream his name, but he doesn’t respond. I start to cry, but there is no time for panic.
I lower Taylor out his window as far as my arms will stretch so he can breathe. I hold only his tiny hands, his body dangling (晃荡). I am in the center of the firestorm. I choke, spitting out black ashes. Blisters rise on the backs of my legs; the pain becomes unbearable. I have to do something. But there is no grass below, no trees or bushes.
Paragraph 1:
My brain searches for options.
