21、One of my first memories as a child in the 1950s was a discussion I had with my brother in our tiny bedroom in the family house in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
We had heard in school about a planet called Pluto. It was the farthest, coldest, and darkest thing a child could imagine. We guessed how long it would take to die if we stood on the surface of such a frozen place wearing only the clothes we had on. We tried to figure out how much colder Pluto was than Antarctica, or than the coldest day we had ever experienced in Pennsylvania.
Pluto, which famously was downgraded from a “major planet” to a “dwarf planet”(矮星) in 2006, captured our imagination because it was a mystery that could complete our picture of what it was like at the most remote corners of our solar system.
Pluto’s underdog discovery story is part of what makes it so attractive. Clyde Tombaugh was a Kansas farm boy who built telescopes out of spare auto parts, old farm equipment and self-ground lenses. As an assistant at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, Tombaugh's task was to search millions of stars for a moving point of light, a planet that the observatory’s founder thought existed beyond the orbit of Neptune. On February 18,1930,Tombaugh found it. Pluto was the first planet discovered by an American, and represented a moment of light in the midst of the Great Depression’s dark encroachment (入侵).
Pluto is much more than something that is not a planet. It’s a reminder that there are many worlds out there beyond our own and that the sky isn’t the limit at all. We don’t know what kinds of fantastic variations on a theme nature is capable of making until we get there to look.

【4】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph most probably mean?

22、Gwen Ifill was a famous African-American journalist who fought for social justice through her news stories. After she died in 2016, a student award was set up in her honor.
Ana Rodriguez, a 16-year-old student at Archie Williams High School, won the 2021 Gwen Ifill High School Student of the Year Award. She won due to her real passion for fighting fake news about COVID-19 vaccines, medical studies and other social media dramas.
Rodriguez said that fake news these days is often masked as real news, meaning teenagers and adults need to cultivate a certain type of skepticism before they either react to the news or spread it. “You need to double-check the sources and get a second opinion,” she said, “If you read about vaccines having some kind of aftermath, go and check another website.”
Archie Williams High School English teacher Matthew Leffel nominated (提名) Rodriguez for the award because of her enthusiasm and “purposefulness”. “Ana went very deep with her research,” Leffel said. “She was able to demonstrate the kind of media literacy (媒介素养) skills that we had intended to build.”
The project used a free public fact-checking website called Checkology. Students were required to write an argument on their chosen topic. Then they had to produce a podcast on “The Truth About …”. In Rodriguez’s case, for example, it was “The Truth About Scientific Racism”. Rodriguez also worked on several different topics, including the fake information of COVID-19 vaccines.
She and other students also made their arguments into booklets to hand out. They hoped to educate more people. Some of their other topics included 5G towers, climate change and surveillance (监控) technology.
“Ana was purposeful,” Leffel said. “It was clear she was not just doing it as a class assignment, but as something that had an important meaning for her life.”

23、Each time you transmit your sensitive data into a website, you could unknowingly fall for an online fraud, or criminals may hack the computer system at your bank or store.
Fortunately, MetLife Defender provides comprehensive protection against the full range of today’s online risks—beyond your personal computer or device—to keep your personal data safe.
The Good
MetLife Defender has all of the basic services and features that an identity protection plan needs. The individual plan includes:
◇Medical data protection
◇Financial data protection
◇Personal data protection, detection and removal
◇Pre-approval offer and junk mail opt-outs
◇Credit monitoring and alerts
MetLife Defender’s family plan includes some really cool and unique online child safety features. If MetLife’s system detects any cyber-bullying involving your child, it will automatically alert the parents.
The Bad
MetLife Defender doesn’t have anything that “wows” you. Everything they have in their individual plan can be found at another identity protection company. Plus, MetLife Defender has a higher monthly price than most.
The Bottom Line
MetLife Defender is an average product, but what sets them standing out is their family plan. The Online Child Safety Features is an innovative approach to protecting both their identity and themselves emotionally and physically. We wouldn’t recommend MetLife Defender solely on their identity protection, but their child features are worth testing out with their free 30-day trial.
Family Plan
Metlife’s family identity protection plan covers two adult individuals and an unlimited number of minors—children up to age 18— living in the same household as the covered adults.
Cancellation
If Metlife subscribers cancel a paid monthly subscription mid-month, Metlife services continue until the end of that month. After that, the customer will no longer be billed.
