二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、It is August 1939, and a group of frightened children are boarding a train at Prague’s Wilson Station. Their heartbroken parents do not join them. Indeed, they fear they may never see their children again. But they know that their children will live. These are among the 669 children, most of them Jewish, that Nicholas Winton will go on to save from death at the hands of the Nazis (纳粹).

Nicholas Winton was born on 19 May 1909 in London, to German-Jewish parents. The family later took British nationality. On leaving school, Winton worked in banks in Germany and France. He returned to Britain in 1931, where he worked in business.

In December 1938, a friend asked Winton to come to Prague to aid people who were escaping from the Nazis. In Prague, Winton saw people living in terrible conditions and whose lives were in danger. He decided to help transport children to safety in Britain. He established an office to keep records of the children, and then returned to Britain to find temporary homes for them. He used donated funds and his own money to pay the 50 pounds per child that the British government required. By August 1939, Winton had saved 669 children.

During World War II, Winton served as an officer in Britain’s Royal Air Force. He left the military in 1954. He then worked for international charities and for various companies. For the most part, he did not mention the children he saved, and his actions soon disappeared from people’s memories.

That all changed in 1988 when his wife Grete found a forgotten journal at home. The journal contained photographs and names of the children and addresses of the families that took them in. She sent the journal to a newspaper, and that year Winton was seen on the British television programme That’s Life. At one point, the host asked people in the audience to stand up if Nicholas Winton had saved their lives. A shocked Winton watched as the majority of people rose to their feet. The programme brought his actions to public attention, and Winton became a respected figure around the world.

22、A discovery in animal science is causing quite a stir among dog owners nationwide. The discovery was made by distinguished researcher and veterinarian, Dr. Marty Goldstein.

“I used to spend a lot of time teaching owners to spot red flags---like restlessness, inactiveness, and antisocial behavior---so they can tell when their dog is asking for help right away,” he recalls. “But now, I want to help people take a more proactive approach to their dog’s health.”

It was this mission that led Dr. Marty to discover a remarkable new care technique that could help your dog lead the longest, healthiest life possible---no matter their age. “It was amazing to see the transformation, especially in older dogs who were already slowing down,” he says. “In a matter of weeks, their vitality noticeably improved. They had more energy, they were more playful, more flexible, more relaxed...it was pretty astonishing. Even their coats looked healthier.”

Over the course of his career, Dr. Marty has treated countless animals and been at the forefront of veterinary(兽医的)advancement for years, but believes this to be his most important discovery to date. “It’s rooted in science typically reserved for humans, but I’ve made it very simple to use for dogs,” he explains. “I think it’s exactly what our four-legged friends have been asking for.”

Earlier this month, Dr. Marty released an educational video for other dog owners, so they could follow his advice at home. If you’d like to try enhancing your pet’s life span using Dr. Marty’s approach, click below for more complete instructions.

23、When Barcelona’s citizens emerged from a six-week lockdown at the end of April last year, they found that while the city had lain inactive, nature had been busy transforming the streets and parks into a wilderness. “The parks were shut, so no gardening was carried out,” says Margarita Pares, who heads the city’s biodiversity programme. “It was spring and it rained a lot more than usual. The result was an explosion in plant growth. And there were many more butterflies, as they are a species that reacts very quickly to changes in the environment.”

Once the gardeners went back to work, the question was whether to return everything to its neat and tidy state, or let nature take its course? The answer is neither. Pares says the council spent the previous two years working on plans to “naturalise” or “rewild” the city—and was about to announce this change of policy when the pandemic struck. By the time the lockdown ended, it was a lot easier to sell rewilding to the public desiring fresh air and open space. When it comes to embracing nature in its cities, Spain falls behind many countries. But it is hoped that Barcelona’s new policy will go some way to correcting that.

“In a city like Barcelona, it’s a case of replacing what exists with green infrastructure(基础建设),” says Lorena Escuer who has worked in Barcelona on a pilot scheme called Alcorques Vivos, which plants wildflowers at the base of trees in the streets rather than surrounding them with pavement. “It’s not having a park surrounded by asphalt(沥青)but introducing nature into the city,” she says. “People need re-educating. Their idea of a clean space is where there’s no life and the ecosystem is dead. There’s this idea that nature is something outside and that what’s natural for the city is for there to be nothing.”

“Rewilding has made us look at how we live and how we want to live. There’s no going back from here. The lockdown gave us a glimpse of nature in the city and it surprised us,” says Margarita Pares.

【1】What happened to Barcelona after a six-week lockdown last year?

A.The environment became wild.

B.Plants stopped growing.

C.Gardening was abolished.

D.Fewer butterflies emerged.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “new policy” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Returning Barcelona to neatness and tidiness.

B.Filling open space with fitness facilities.

C.“Naturalising” or “rewilding” Barcelona.

D.Developing economy to shake off backwardness.

【3】Which of the following will Lorena Escuer probably support?

A.Surrounding trees with pavement.

B.Promoting green infrastructure.

C.Building park roads with asphalt.

D.Keeping the city empty and clean.

【4】What is Margarita Pares’s attitude to “rewilding”?

A.Doubtful.

B.Intolerant.

C.Unclear.

D.Favorable.

24、Cheaters called “pirates” often use camcorders(便携式摄像机) and cell phones to make illegal copies of blockbusters in the local theater. These pirates then sell those recordings on the street or over the Internet for very low prices. Some share them for free.

“It’s unfair for people to pirate movies,” says 15-year-old Hadaia Azad Ezzulddin. Movie piracy “takes money out of the pockets of thousands of people in the movie industry,” she notes. Victims include famous actors and directors as well as local theater owners and their employees.

Hadaia came up with an idea that could help stop movie piracy. Hadaia’s idea uses infrared(红外线的) light. This range of light is invisible to the human eye. It is visible, however, to many types of cameras. Theater owners could place small infrared lights on their movie screens. The lights would not disturb people watching the movie. It would, however, distort the recordings made by many types of cameras.

To test her idea, Hadaia built a box with a movie screen inside. Then, she projected images on that screen through a hole in the box. She took recordings of those images, using nine different types of cameras. These included the types found in cell phones as well as camcorders. During some tests, she also turned on light emitting diodes(发光二极管), or LEDs. The LEDs were embedded(植入的)in a certain place behind the movie screen. They gave out infrared light.

Sure enough, she showed, a pirated movie included odd stripes or spots if it had been recorded while the LEDs were on. It might be possible to use the LEDs to flash the date and time on the movie screen. The information would then appear in the illegal recordings. Theater owners or police might use the information to track down the pirates.

Cutting down on piracy might get more people into theaters to watch the real movie instead of an illegal copy. Six out of every ten films now produced aren’t profitable. They don’t make enough money to recover how much was spent to make and market them. Such a poor payback can discourage filmmakers from producing anything but the types expected to become blockbuster hits. It might also keep smaller theaters from showing a wider variety of movie types.

1From what Hadaia says in Paragraph 2, we can infer that _______.

A. most people spend less money on pirates moves

c. She turned on the LEDs placed behind the screen.

d. She made a special box with a movie screen inside.

A. d c a b   B. d b a c

C. b a c d   D. b c a d

A. forty percent of movies now are profitable

B. small theaters often choose to show low-cost movies

C. more and more people go to theaters to fight movie piracy

D. filmmakers prefer to produce ordinary movies than blockbusters
